5 Quality of Life Changes Console Desperately Needs

Console Needs Some Help

I have played The Elder Scrolls Online strictly from a console perspective since its launch in 2015, on PS4. Yes, that's 5 years i know. I have 1500 CP, I've done just about all the PvE content (Dungeon and Trials) i have wanted to do. But a majority of my 5 years playing, i have spent 80% of my time in PvPing, theory crafting, you name it i have done it.

There are several problems that i feel life on console needs to be addressed in a formal response to the developers hence this post.

From experience looking back at Deltia's Gaming and SypherPK's old ESO videos, i remember these little icons popping up on their screen (add ons). I saw their spell/weapon damage , when their ultimate was ready, potion available it basically told them when to do what. Life on console is totally different, i understand the game won't run as smoothly vs the PC. But the one problem with console is the lack of quality of life items that PC has been able to enjoy for years.

If you play on console you know, what it feels like to live in the stone age. Literally, 30 fps maximum, vanilla gaming experience of ESO. Then you see a video of some Youtuber, that whips out a whole new setup in 1 click of the mouse. It honestly feels that none of the developers even know what console life is like, even though console (Xbox and PS4) brings in over half the revenue. From a PvP perspective, the community as a whole feels abandoned. They just give us a 2x AP event once a year and call it "content." I understand that a majority of the player base doesn't even step foot into PvP, because ESO is Skryim with Friends. But the PvP community is the most loyal player base, but the most critical. We don't care to call them out when they mess up. But when they do something well, we applaud them. Enough of the rant, lets get into the reason for this post.

These are the 5 Quality of Life Changes We Desperately Need on Console

Gear Finder

Think with me for one moment

You just thought of a new PvP build, now you have to go look for your gear on ALL of your different characters. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could locate what character it is on?

YES! It would be nice, but only PC is able to have this luxury with 3rd party add ons.

For console this isn't an option. We must log into each and every character to find all of our gear spread out on a vast numbers of characters. For us console players this is one of the most annoying things, besides lag. Loading screen on average last 30-45 seconds, couple that with skimming through hundreds of items hoarded over years, it is nothing less than a nightmare. Just to find you gear, you will probably spend 20 minutes just looking for your pieces logging in and out several times. This doesn't include even setting up your character into a certain PvP or PvE spec.

I know Zenimax is capable of adding something like a gear finder into the game as they implemented a “Guild Store Item Search” for console. I don't think that it would be that difficult to add this to a banker, and make your gear visible, but NOT withdraw-able to all your characters. The server should remember the gear i do have, so therefore the server could let me know what character my gear is on.

Wardrobe Gear/Skills

My idea is to bring yet another add on that PC has to console.

Being able to quickly change from a PvP to a PvE setup would be a huge time saver. Not only the basic change of quickly changing gear and skills. But being able to add CP into this as well, would be a blessing. I understand that you would have to pay the 3k CP reset, but small little changes like this would go a long way for the health of the community. This would help all players in PvP and PvE alike. As we could quickly use rapid maneuvers, then swap back to our regular setup in a few buttons. Not only that, but for example in vBRP, on the 4th stage you need a designated interrupter (i.e. Crushing Shock). That player could have a setup specifically for that part of the dungeon and swap to it in between round while out of combat. I am sure there are countless other examples that i haven't thought of that would be a benefit to us all.

How could they implement this?

There is already a wardrobe function in ESO, it is a cosmetic setup for your Outfit(s). This has a high price tag of 1500 crowns. With all of this together Zenimax could sell several different Outfit slots, on multiple different characters and make this crown store item viable (Zenimax you should hire me :p ). The system already remembers the style of gear you chose, color, and weight. Why can't it remember loadouts? If they implemented this, i would hope they would give us atleast 1 or 2 outfit slots.

Camera Sensitivity

This change is probably the easiest. All they need to do, is increase the maximum speed of the sensitivity in the settings we already have. I, like many others play on max sensitivity, and still feel like it isn't enough to play this game at its full potential. This would immensely help us PvP players as we need another button to press other than our jumping button(X). But in all seriousness this change could roll out in the next incremental patch, that is how easy it would be to change. This change, if implemented would increase the skill ceiling of both PvP and PvE, which this game desperately needs.

Custom Keybinds

This change, it is the most basic function of an MMO. All PC games when they come out they have this, why are console players always forced into playing with the same buttons? Why is there no customization? I have hit my ultimate (L1 and R1) multiple times and it not go off. While i understand this could be a sever issue, sometimes i believe that my controller only registers the L1 skill or just the R1 skill. If i just had one button for my ultimate, it would not only feel more fluid while playing, but it would have a near 100% success rate of casting the skill. On a side note, i know there are people that play this game on console that have some sort of disability. They could use this setting to alleviate pain/discomfort from playing with regular button binds and would ultimately increase their success in ESO. Being able to change and skill/button to any choosing would bring this MMO to another level.

How could they implement this?

There is already a setting called "Template" instead of adding types A, B, and C. They could just let you pick where you want everything to be. Simple and easy enough. This setting would be a client side setting, so i wouldn't think that it would use any server space to change button layouts.

Customizable Buff Bar/UI Changes

This, just like the previous one is a foundational function that most MMO's have. When hitting my buffs, i should be able to toggle which ones i want to see, all im asking for is a yes or no switch. Having 25 buffs above my HP is so cluttered, i barley even use it, i only have it to see if my fury is fully proced and thats it. I wish they would just show the ability icon rather than 3 buffs from 1 skill. All i need to see is the skill that i hit on my buff bar.

Secondly, being able to adjust the UI to either increase or decrease the size of would be icing on the cake. If they wanted to go overboard they could add an option to toggle on weapon damage or spell damage just like the PC add on i talked about in the beginning.

In closing, i do enjoy this game. There are just certain aspects that make it mediocre. I want this game to be the best it can. I miss the old nostalgia feelings i once had, and i am forever looking to have that feeling once more.

Like i said in the beginning, i want a peaceful and respectful dialogue so we can possibly get some/all of these quality of life changes we need on console.

Thanks for your time. Have a blessed day

Camera sensitivity is limited by processing power. The platform needs to be able to build the picture faster the higher the sensitivity is. This means, unfortunately, raising it on console is a lot more difficult than just patching it tomorrow.

I think most of them just take things like this for granted since they all use add-ons, and probably haven't played the game the way that it's shipped in years.

My bigger issue with the controller setup was putting the barswap, potion and perspective change all on there. In the heat of battle you can fat finger the swap and change perspective or hit your pots and swap weapons at the same time. That’s a wasted action plus the action to get back to the proper view or weapon bar.

I remedied that by buying a controller mod that added paddles to my controller and put the bar swap and synergies there. No more fat fingering the d-pad. No more awkward Y+B press when I’m going for my X button In the rotation. These are the things I have been missing that smoothed out the controls for me and made me enjoy the game.

The only other thing I would like is multiple load outs. It doesn’t have to be on the fly but even buried in the inventory menu would be OK as well. Some battles have a longer burn where I would prefer a different set without the hassle of changing one piece at a time or some sets are better for trash pulls but not great for boss fights, so the flexibility to switch without wasting 2 minutes of my life would be great.

I like the idea about filtering relevant buffs also. It’s hard to keep track of 20 of them all lined up across my screen to see when I can squeeze in the extra spamable or if I need to barswap now and reset the whole rotation.

I didn't think of that. Thanks, well shoot. I figured we could have atleast got that. Thanks for your reply

I'm sure they do. I have a PC, If I would have the option to swap and transfer everything i would. But I'm not gonna restart on PC.

Yea man, that's probably the most annoying thing. I actually had to do a ps4 setting to remedy the bar seap issue. I dont know if Xbox has this capability, but I use L3 to bar swap and my left d-pad to start sprinting. (I dont have to hold the d-pad down, I just tap it and just run)

This really helps with 2 main things

    1. I dont have to take my left thumb off the analog stick, so bar swapping is a breeze and I have both my thumbs on the joysticks 100% of the time.
    2. Now my hand can rest more natural I uses to "claw" the bar swap and my hand would start hurting after more than an hour of playing.

    On a personal note-
I made a settings video that can walk you through the "keybinding" portion on ps4. Maybe Xbox has something similar hope this helps.

Xbox one does allow remapping of buttons through it’s accessories app. For me though it’s really just the d-pad that’s clunky to use.

Here is what I ended up getting: https://collectiveminds.ca/shop/xbox/xbox-one/strikepack-dominator/

Adding the two mappable paddles to the controller really changed the game. Now that I don’t have to take my finger off the thumb stick to press that swap anymore I find i play a lot smoother and more efficiently. It’s still on the left hand just a quick tap without letting go of the thumb stick. The right paddle I mapped for synergies, for me that a QOL adjustment, I though of putting pots there but I use synergies way more than pots so that made more sense.

The on drawback is that the connection must be wired. Honestly it’s a trade worth making.
Having paddles on a controller whether it’s a pro/elite controller itself or a 3rd party accessory are a must. It’s a true game changer.

They should really just let you swap accounts or copy them 1:1 even if it requires an extra purchase like FF14 gives you access to the same account on either platform.

Console PTS , it's ok if ZOS cannot provide the most update model for every coming chapter or dlc .

We really need a tool kit for theory crafting , is it possible ?

I would agree, PC has a PTS with all the gear so they could test any and all setups they want. It would be nice if we could have something of the sorts. But I dont think Zenimax will, as the value they would get out of it would be low.

Would be nice, but I doubt they would do something like that.

Yea I used a scuff controller for a while, but I didnt like it. Using the ps4 remapping was a game changer for me several years ago.
