Live chat not working

I have an Xbox One. My sound comes through a Bose sound bar attached to my Samsung TV. I also use a remote Xbox controller. The issue is during live chat, I can hear other people talking, but when I attach my Xbox headphones to my controller, it appears that no one hears me and I do not hear any sounds from my headphone earpiece; the sounds, including live chat continue to come through my Bose sound bar. How can I fix this so I can live chat?
