Will we ever get a 'hide shoulder' option in outfits?

Its not impossible that maybe someday we might get some of that... I mean, as I once mentioned elsewhere:
The most reasonable thing we can expect...
...is for them to sell "invisible armor" motiv pages in the crown store.

I mean, the suits in charge certainly won't send a code-jockey to spend their paid time programming the hide function for all outfit slots without wanting to see some profit, right?

But selling people the option... that would appeal to their shriveled greedy little hearts, right? :p;)

As for the lore... well, I already said it. "Invisible Armor". Enchanting your sturdy armor with an invisibility spell, to lure your foe into a false sense of security...
I mean, look at this guy:
    Sai_Sahan.png
...and that way they -could- give us this, while still controlling the rarity by hiding the pieces in crown crates (like, make shoulders and belts "uncommon", gloves and boots "rare" and chest pieces "extra-rare" while keeping pants for all for modesties sake... I could see that happening...), and making a profit (something ZOS likes as much as any business)

Of course, until and unless they go there, all we can do is deal with it by picking unobstrusive shoulder pieces, like the "black fur collar" shoulders from the greymoor prolouge, or "pixane" style shoulder pieces from various light armor motivs (ancient elf, assassins league, low-rank breton, malacath, glass, hollowjack, altmer, thieves guild, trinimac, yokudan or the prophet shawl off the top of my head...), or the "armband" style shoulder pieces from Tsaesci or Honor Guard motivs...

Same for others, there are some pieces that can be used... like Sai Sahans chest, or prisoner (shackles) and armband style gloves (pyandonea or mazzatun come to mind) or some sandales-style footwear (like from prisoner outfit, or prophet, or others...) and so on...

But yeah, we really could use some more motivs for "summer outfit" options as well. Not like that will happen this year, with the current skyrim chapter we can expect loads of cold weather outfits to be a thing, but... eventually? I do have high hopes that soon they will go to the deserts of hammerfell for an expansion to complete the circle, and then I am hoping we might get some "ancient egypt" style outfits as "yokudan"... could be that there would be some more options for people who want to show off their character tatoos, bodypaint markings or ritual scars...

Zos has commented on this before. I believe it was Jessica and irrc she said that they were looking into being able to hide some slots of armor. However, I expect that is a very low priority with some of the other stuff the worked on this past year+ taking a significant amount of their free time.

I'm up for hiding anything. But especially the shoulders. IIRC that was even up on PTS at one point (among other things that should be in-game, like the Short Mussed Wave hairstyle... :/ )

Sometimes you really want to be able to show off your body markings, especially since anyone who buys crates has an entire collection screen full of tattoos they never use. Even if we wanted to, there are so few armors that would show them off.

I get that a lot of people want to avoid the whole "ugh, ppl shouldn't hide pants or everyone'll run around in undies!!!1!" things, but seriously, the Nord Bather towel and the skimpy hunter outfits are things as well, and I've definitely seen more overweight male Orcs wearing them than any female characters. I don't think allowing people to run around naked is gonna break lore more than it already is tbh.

Shouldn't it unironically just be a motif that is just blank? I mean I don't know how they have this all setup but making the selected motif point to no texture or model "SHOULD" be simple, the only "hard" part I can see is giving the option to all players, or how they plan to make us pay for said feature.

Not really. Look at the outfit system and you will find Zos has gone a different direction. That seems a lot simpler than creating a new motif to handle it since they already have the groundwork laid.

However, it is a little more complicated than that anyhow. Hiding hip flaps has been a bigger issue than shoulders for what I assume is obvious reasons. It takes a little more work to accomplish that goal vs creating an empty slot. I would expect, and it would make sense, that Zos would want to roll out the entire package at once. So not so simple.

...and -way- more difficult to do. Possibly impossible without redoing ALL the motives... seeing as it would not be leaving an entire slot "bare" but instead partially adjusting the visual data for what goes into the slot...

But thankfully they have started doing a lot more motives without those pesky hip pieces on light and medium armor these days...

As for shoulders, well, as I said, "invisible armor" motiv might be one possibility, someday. More motives that have alternate shoulder visuals (like the ones mentioned above) might be another. Ideally I would love to see both...

In what you chose edited out from what you quoted I noted that the hip flaps were more complicated. The very sentence before the one you left in.

And yes, I expected it was obvious that they would have to do a rework to the motifs to permit hiding the hip flaps since they are part of the design. Zos has already shown a propensity to offer more than one option for the same armor slot when they added Jerkins after the game launched.

As for hiding armor slots, Zos already has a means for hiding armor in the game that does not require coding a new motif. Look at the outfit section head slot and you will see we have the means to hide our head slot. It would seem easier to use what is already designed to build something new that would likely be sold in the crown store.

No. My best guess is hiding any slot was implemented from start of outfit system but ZoS can't enable it because they are unable to fix possibly related bugs which cause people run on swords and horses and turn invisible &cet.

I'll expand a little bit on this too, if I may.

The workflow in the other SP games was quite similar in terms of a professional workflow, though I'd imagine these guys still open and work with models straight from the source, repack, and then reintroduce. But the structure is relatively the same. Unless they merged the blocks of the hip pieces with the base of the body armor model, it's as simple as just removing the block, along with what ever equivalent to trishapedata they use, as well as the textures, and then pack it back up and make another unit for those chest pieces. That's where things start to get rather complicated in the QT cycle.
    • Efficacy of introduction to these new chest pieces.
    • Dealing with logins and potential notification spam that a new outfit style has been made available (cause that's a lot of chest pieces).
    • Reworking the UI to appear more orderly with it (which isn't too hard, but I'd imagine they're proud about how clean and easy to use that UI is aside from selecting outfits).
    • Making sure that things were properly indicated that had hip pieces or not, which would be easier imo with the ones without.
    • Making sure dye channels and environments work properly, even though the should since they came from an already pre-existing mesh.
    • Pricing that balances the gold sink portion of the system.

I know there's a lot I'm missing, but while the workflow on to edit these pieces can be relatively quick and simple process, it's another to actually get them into the game. So you are very correct that it would make way more sense to roll it out as one package because it deals with all of those complications as well as others that I've most likely missed because their workflow could be completely different than I'm even envisioning based on my own experiences. Very not so simple.
