Stories & Quests should explore why people of different Races are with a different faction

The Base game explored the perspectives of each faction and why those races joined forces for that faction. It’s a great starting point.

However, players have had the “Any Race in Any Faction” upgrade since 2014, and now ZOS is adding a “Faction Token” to allow players to switch sides.

I think it’s high time that Stories & Quests should explore why people of different Races are with a different faction. (edit: explore these nuances because they could make for great characters and stories)

Let’s explore characters and groups of races that either defected or never joined their respective Factions.

This makes the Three Banner War interesting as it considers their ideological standpoints rather than just “I hate X race from Y faction”.

Examples:
the group of Argonians in Valenwood who didn’t join EP because they refused to work with the Dunmer.

Would Orcs living in Skyrim or Valenwood want to join the Daggerfall Covenant?

Why would a Khajiit want to join DC or EP?

In what circumstances would a Nord ever join AD? Why would a High Elf join EP?

Let’s not forget the imperials who have their own issues going on.

These would make for interesting characters and storylines worth exploring as well as make the Three Banner War more interesting.

It would certainly be more role player friendly for people using the upgrades

Maybe because "race" and "country" are different things? Also this is not some full-scale war, this is fight for power between temporary alliances (even if led by official ruler), so for majority of commoners race of their neighbors or by-passers doesn't matter much aside from typical prejudices?

This is one of my favorite things to think about. I've got about 4 pages worth of backstory written for my main as to why an Orc is with the Pact. Long story short: his stronghold fell to infighting when he was a baby and he was adopted by a Nord couple and raised as a Nord in Skyrim. It's fun since he's kinda is biased against other Orcs - he thinks they're just barbarians.

I'm also planning a Skaal to be in the Covenant, but that'll be more a circumstance of where he is and he's fighting for his friends. If I'm not mistaken, the Pact questline is more involved with the Alliance War than the other two, so it makes sense that my Pact Orc would care a lot more about fighting and his homeland than the Nord would.

The majority of my characters are EP, so I tend to just make up my own reasons, using the quests as a starting point for role-playing.

My Altmer nightblade saved Summerset, only to join the AD invasion of Shadowfen and became completely disillusioned with the Dominion. In an attempt to find redemption for her misdeeds, she defected and now fights for the Pact.

My Imperial StamSorc works for Abnur Tharn, hoping to reform the true Empire. Thus she aids the Pact because, as the most fragmented and disorderly of the three alliances, they will be the easiest foe for the Legions to defeat.

The War is still going on, last we heard some people are trying to end it peacefully while plenty of others would have nothing to do with a peaceful resolution.

It would be nice to have character/faction specific quests like; What about the Orcs?
    - Negotiations of Trinimac Orcs joining the Aldmeri Dominion.
    - Orc clans in Skyrim deciding which side to join in the war.
    - How does King Kurog’s death affect Orc matters?

Do any of the factions have a narrative about the dragon crisis; the AD think they handled it themselves while people in the other factions felt that they had to clean up their mess.

    a) that has always been the case in all elder scrolls games, its a dynamic living world where everyone has their own story

    b) this is the same ib the real world...and i dont mean today but since ever...this idea that for example in medieval times all the french lived in france and fought for france is nonsense...people tend to view history way too simple and black and white...humans 500 years ago werent that different from today...
