I am interested to know what most people's strategy is

Option 1 could have you in an infinite loop, past the point of connection, forever
Option 2 could leave you with a continuous restart of a very long load in front of you.

Oh the Dilemma! I dont know what to do!
My internet is invalid

Leave it for a long time in the hope that the little circle will stutter for a second and then let you in

If you can get someone to send you a whisper while you are stuck, sending you an invite, or sharing a quest with you, it can sometimes pop you out.

Not sure if it actually works or if this is just confirmation bias though.

I've started writing a novel. They say everyone has one in them. I'm figuring I'll get a chapter or so written each patch

No way i'd ALT-F4 at the moment, chances are, you'll not get past the Requesting character load screen... :(

If you can get someone to send you a whisper while you are stuck, sending you an invite, or sharing a quest with you, it can sometimes pop you out.

Not sure if it actually works or if this is just confirmation bias though.

The last few weeks I'd get guild chat and incoming mail notifications for up to 2 minutes while not being able to interact with my environment or send an outgoing chat.
    THEN I'd get disconnected.

I suspect that at that point the traffic has become one-way, from the server to the client.

I don't know for certain, yet, but I suspect that the client 'send buffer' stops taking input, from the player or the client side of the game, and has nothing to respond *with*, and when the server doesn't get confirmations that we're receiving incoming traffic - it assumes we're not there any longer and logs us out.

I say I assume it's the client side send buffer because when I type chat msgs into the chat box, it doesn't even appear in the chat window when I press 'enter', even after repeated attempts. My ability to interact with the environment stops at the same time.
I'm not talking about crowded conditions, it usually happens when I'm alone in the middle of nowhere going to harvest a node, and I stop to either chat or actually attempt the harvest.
I do NOT have to be in a crowded area, or in combat, and I do not have to have recently been in a crowd or completed combat.

I don't know if the mechanics in the code are similar, but it could be why the load screens take so long - the game server thinks we're not there anymore, and fails to continue the process.

SOMEtimes the issue seems to clear before we're logged out, because there have been a few times I can continue after being stalled if I haven't been logged out yet.

Anecdotal, non-scientific information, but it's a series of events that guild members have confirmed happen randomly to them, as well.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.
