More than likely, it is the focus being changed from one quest to another in the Journal. The game is not good about keeping the focus on a multistage quest to the same quest chain. Once you finish one stage, the game may very well move to some other quest in your journal, not even in the same zone, and point you in that direction.

I know you can have only the focused quest on the Compass, maybe there is a setting to have it the same way for the quest markers.

Of course, as the game moves focus around, it can still be confusing.

It happens to me in Moonlit cove. Delve has several layers, and sometimes it just shows wrong. I go out of one portion of the cave, quest marker shows I must go back, I go few steps back, and marker shows me to go back again)

Nope it habitually do this with the one and same quest. Southern Elsweyr and CWC is particularly bad but even something like writs points you in completely binkers ways. I habitually do mine in Rimmen but it doesn't show the actual drop off point, instead it highlights tha caravan that take you to thw base game zones >.<

Murkmire does have bad Breadcrumbing. The worst are Root Whisper Dailies, if you don't know where the Quest areas are, you will never find them. Other than the quests that are done in the Village itself, you have to Wayshrine out to see where to go. Also, make sure to talk to the Quest Giver again until his quest arrow goes away.

This happens quite a bit when a quest sends me to another zone. If I follow the waypoint I'd end up running/riding through multiple zones and taking multiple boats and carts to get to where the quest is. Better to read the quest description in the journal and hope it says what zone to go to.

That is a holdover from the Alliance separations for Writ Turn Ins.

Not saying it does not need to be fixed, it just is why it happens.

And that explains just about every quest in CWC and all the ones in that skooma delve in Southern Elsweyr how? The point was that so many quest pointers point you in the wrong direction and sends you on a massive detour.

The waypoints will frequently get confused about where you need to go on certain quests in certain interiors or map transitions.

This is a shippable bug from release or shortly afterwards and is unlikely to get fixed at this point.

Journal behaviour is also subpar in that it will change focus w/o you asking for it.
