Is there a reason monster set's are only heads and shoulder's?

Just curious, it kinda kills the point of having Helmets and shoulders be apart of so many armor sets because they immediately get deconstructed. Only time I've seen anyone use them is on lower level players. Just doesnt make much sense that so many pieces of armor are made pointless because of it.

There was once a meta where all stamina players dropped them in favor of pure arena weapons. This magical time when Dots were crowned emperor and ruled over the peasant lands. Those were dark times indeed. Luckily the mighty Spread Sheet of Standardization realized what they allowed to happen and drew a GREAT hammer to defeat the Dots.

The monster sets were then free to rise from their shackles and be worn again.

Monster sets are two trait sets. Makes sense that they come in only two specific armor pieces. Head and shoulder drops on the other sets in part for a larger RNG pool and in part to give players a choice. You kind of answered your own question saying low level characters wear shoulder and head pieces that are not monster sets. The armor pieces are not pointless they just have a short shelf life.

If they came in other slots, you could potentially use more than one monster set at a time, opening the way to more balancing issues. (Of course mythic items get around this issue, but they probably didn't think of that back then?)

Wow, cant believe I didnt think about that lol. Is it not possible to make it so you cant have two full sets active at a time?

It is a subliminal advertising for head and shoulders, they are getting paid for it (obviously a joke)

That's what they did with mythics, but I'm assuming they didn't think of, or didn't want to code, that back then. Mythic items are, I guess, a selling point for Greymoor now, so they'd have had more motivation to make them more varied and so find a solution.

Likely also for prime visual real-estate. The helmet and shoulder are big obvious spots to put the Giant Ugly Monster Armor.

(luckily, you can cover it up with an Outfit motif or style. So all those other armor appearances, at least, aren't made pointless.)

Another thing monster sets only drop in Vet dungeons, the non-monster head and shoulder parts of the set are a help for people who are not quite vet ready.

Oh God. Don't give ZOS any bright ideas, they need to stay has shoulder/helmet so our inventories don't become worse than they already are and the RNG pool isn't overwhelmed by monster items in any slot.

Mythic items 1 limiting to 1 at a time is not a justification for monster sets to come in any slot.

Also, 2 piece perfected weapons have a stat bonus again, 3 piece sets were recently buffed and some monster sets have been nerfed. There is more of a reason for head/shoulders of regular 5 piece sets than ever before.

On my mag sorc for pvp i use 5 bright throat, 2xchudan, jewelry 3 ancient, front bar staff willpower, backbar staff potentat.
(you can run 5 alfiq instead of ancient/willpower, but I had a golden willpower fire staff in the bank and it results in the same overall powerlevel)

    So 5 sets if u want. :-P

But most players are comfy with 5/5/2 some with a arena weapon on backbar.

When greymoor hits live server 5/5/1monster/1mythic (+ backbar) could be more common.

Because that is what ZOS decided. Only reason.

Just like some other 2-piece "sets" are only weapons.

While most sets are 5-piece... and we have 12 slots all together. So... two "normal" sets, and either one monster, or one master weapon set.

I am less sure how the 3-piece weapon sets work with all that these days... I mean, yeah, sure, back before 2H weapons became 2 pieces they were a good thing, but now... ;)

Personally I am more wondering why the helmets & shoulders are so random, to add more annoying RNG-farming time, when it would have been so much easier to have a token system... one player per run gets "monster head" drop, brings it to undaunted armorer, says "head or shoulder in this armor weight, please", and has far less vexation in the process...
    Alas.

Wearing armor made from the head of a dead monster is already quite disgusting...

While optional. Monster sets are a way to effectively power up your build with 3 different set bonuses at once.

    Monster set Head
    Monster set shoulder
    1 set bonus

5 Piece armor set (body, arms, legs, feet, waist)
    1 set bonus

5 piece jewllery & weapon set
    1 set bonus

While you could use other set ups that dont require monster set. The bonuses won't be as effective since you'd be one set short.

Gear sets require 5 slots (at most, you have 3 piece sets like Willpower but you'd be 1 slot short). You only have 12 slots available. Believe-you-me I have tried but bonuses of monster sets seem to out top any other set combination not using them.

You say other sets are made pointless because of them. And you are right in every way. But thats the way zenimax design the game so there ain't much to it.

I would prefer monster underwear instead. Such as [Selene's Underpants]

The stamina meta I remember running a long time ago was as follows:

    1 kena
    1 bloodspawn
    5 hundings
    3 agility
    Maelstrom 2h
    Master Bow or SnB depending

Well, at least it has historical precedent: people have been wearing (or otherwise using) parts of their kills for ages. It can certainly be disgusting, especially when those kills are quite ugly in the first place, but as a practice it fits in well with the “epic fantasy” genre (imo).

And you’re right that trophy collecting and souvenir taking by serial killers is fundamentally the same phenomenon as when people do it in hunting and in war. It just tends to violate more laws and sensibilities.
