The Current State of ESO- In the perspective of a new palyer

Soul Shriven
So i started ESO a little over a week ago and so far i'm enjoying the game. The combat although different has grown on me. The PVE and questing is fun, but so far what I've been enjoying the most is my time PVPing in Cryodiil. I'm still only level 40 but even then it's still a lot of fun PVPing with different groups and participating in their discords (I've always enjoyed PVP the most in the different MMORPGs i've played).

I only have the base game + Marrowind, and I was thinking about getting ESO+. I was doing some research to see if it was worth subscribing and I was ultimately led to the forums... and boy does the community here paint a completely different picture of the state of ESO.

So the main complaints i keep seeing is server lag and server performance that will never get fixed... However, with my time playing I have not experienced this crippling, unplayable lag in cyrodiil. Sure I've had some spikes in ping and drop in FPS, but it was never to the point where it was unplayable (mind you i am on a NA PC server). Am I just lucky? or is this more of an issue for the EU servers and Console players? or is it because i'm not experienced enough to see the server lag?

Ultimately I am asking because I've been browsing the forums quite a bit the past few days, and sadly it makes me not want to subscribe, yet alone continue playing due to the fact that the developers does not care about PVP and its performance. Is all of this really true? or are you all just fake news :P.

It's mostly because you have not been to endcontent, yet. Questing works flawlessly and most people that spend money on TESO are probably questers which is the reason that many old players are afraid that ZoS is only catering new players who don't expect more from TESO than questing (solo).

Go to dungeons, trials or cyrodiil during primetime (especially at t he weekend) and you see for yourself.
    Trial Progression:
    vAA: Hardmode
    vHRC: Hardmode
    vSO: Hardmode
    vMoL: Hardmode + dro-m'Athra-Destroyer
vHoF: Hardmode + Tick Tock Tormentor
    vAS: Hardmode + Immortal Redeemer
    vCR: Hardmode + Gryphon Heart
    vSS: Hardmode

We wish it was fake news, truly.
The reason why we pvpers complain so much about this game is because we've seen how good pvp can actually be, problem is that it keeps getting worse and worse. Issues with lag, performance, changes on the combat system (like adding cast times)... that's why we have this love/hate relationship with this game.
This game has the potential to have one of the best pvp experiences ever (if not the best), and it's sad to see how it gets ruined because of its current state.

PS4 seems to have massive issues in all aspects of the game. PC EU seems to have serious issues as well at least from what I can read here on the forums.

I am a newish player as well. I started about 2 months ago on XB1. I haven’t gone to Cyrodiil but I do play BG occasionally and run regular dungeons. I’ve had a few times where skills appear to be locked and suddenly all of my inputs come out in fast and furious fashion provided I have enough stam or magicka to cover the cost. Usually I can fix this on the fly with a bar swap or a dodge roll, sometimes it takes both. Sometimes it stays locked until a particular fight is done and goes back to normal. I’ve not had that happen in BG or dungeons though only randomly in overland.

Now ESO still has some other bugs. One is the pick up item lock. That’s an easy enough fix with a dodge roll. The shield icon bug is easily the most annoying. You have to either log out or teleport to another zone to get rid of it if you get this in overland content. If you get this in instanced content like group dungeons it will clear itself after you complete that instance and return to the world. Either way it requires a load screen or two to fix, but going from one location in the same zone to another in the same zone via Wayshrine or a house doesn’t fix it.

There are quest bugs also where you can’t start certain quests with other quests open. A perfect example is if you’ve picked up the Demon Weapon quest and it’s still open while questing through the main quest line. The quest called the Tharn Speaks will literally be locked out and won’t show up unless you have completed or dropped the Demon Weapon as Abnar Tharn for some reason can’t be in two instances at once in the particular building. There is another quest similarly locked like this that I’ve read about but have yet to experience myself. I think it’s tied to Morrowind.

My overall experience is good though and as much as I read about how awful the performance of this game is I have experienced daily solid lag free gameplay for probably 99% of my time here.

I also have had a great experience so far, been playing since October, but then i mostly do overland, delves, questing, etc and only group when needed for some world bosses or when i was farming iceheart.

I worry about the negativity on the forums scaring new players off, and hope they remember that !) pvp'ers always complain a lot in every game, and the biggie that forums are only a small number of the playerbase, and tend to post when having problems, instead of praise (human nature).

I am sure there are legit issues, or it wouldnt be such a popular topic, but take it with knowledge of how forums operate.

PC NA does have the best performance of all the platforms and servers. PS4 and Xbox can/do have some issues with performance.

So, you are on the best platform performance wise. It's not perfect, but it is pretty good.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Yeah let's just downplay the issues. Maybe I'm just crazy that my skills and attacks dont register not only for me but for the rest 100% of people that play pvp on console. No problem at all. Just because they dont come here to complain doesn't mean they have no issues, only the most hardcore and dedicated players come to the forums and complain. Others just leave and that's that.

For new players I think ESO is great. They are probably going to spend the first few months leveling characters & exploring & that part of the game is still awesome.

If you are PVPing in the under50 Cyro campaign then the bad PVP performance is less noticeable there then the main campaign (Grey Host). Especially if you are new & don't really notice that some skills won't fire reliably & such.

to be competitive in pvp you have to invest a heavy amount of dedication and research. Much effort is required if you want to fight the good players. Otherwise you can just stick to zerg surfing, which is not bad from a fun viewpoint (try petsorc or snipe spammer for this).

pve is fun in general, a bit dumb and AI acts like stupid pumpkin. And normals are too easy and vets too difficult. So you can enjoy this freely, you can even bring your roleplayer build in normal dungeons and it's fine.

if you can manage your inventory well enough, and that means not keeping worthless stuff and having 1-2 characters as mules (bank), then you don't really need ESO+ until you want to try other content or you like a specific race content like Orsinium or Summerset (but these can be gifted in game for gold).

performance is horrible for most, not for all. For those the rest it's just a discomfort.

    PC NA performs pretty well.

Sometimes I hear people talking like the sky is falling and I think how smooth things have been for me. Then I have a day where I get booted 4 times, not even in Cyrodiil. And when I change zones in recent weeks I have like a 33% chance of being booted to the login screen.

You must do writs then log off. The rest of the game is a laggy mess, and cyro is not functional in any kind of way compared to what it once was. There isn't even a que to get into cyro during prime time anymore because it just doesn't work.

No, PC NA DOES NOT perform well. Not unless your version of well is rubberbanding, roll backs, desyncs, skills not working, bars not swapping, stuck in combat, and health bar desync is "performs pretty well".

The people saying things are working well either don't play end game content or have some other motive for not reporting the situation accurately.

I play on PC EU which everyone says is a disaster of a server. Most of the game's absolutely fine. Overland I've never had any issues, except the odd loading screen in craglorn. Group dungeons are fine barring some issues with group finder. Trials seem to have some problems but I rarely do them now. Cyrodiil is a mixed bag; sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's not depending on load but I wouldn't say it's unplayable. Does the game have some issues - sure. Would they stop you playing - I doubt it. The only thing that might is if the server crashes. That happens but no more than other games I've played. Alot less than some of them tbh.

All zenimax care about is new players and new subscribers to make their money and forget about the old school players. I finally cancelled my subscription due to the direction on the game. Anything that stands out or is powerful gets nerfed. They constantly break the way the game functions and just leave it in a rubbish state. Skills don’t fire when used. Animation cancelling is almost history (probably because new player get destroyed by it) pvp laaag is an absolute joke and they are selling this product without fixing it. Was one a brilliant game and would still be ok if they cared about fixing things instead of how to make the next quick dollar

I may one day pay to play this game again but for now I’d like an apology for selling me such a broken product

@Nemesis7884 I play a DK dungeon tank. And even when I solo old dungeons like Crypt of Hearts, I get bad lag. The lag is especially bad at the Illabris brothers, sometimes to the point that heavy attacks hit before the animation does. I don't know why, but it is very frustrating.

Browsing on this forum can get a little depressing from time to time. You should browse reddit, it is all positive and praise there.

I really can not imagine how people play this game without ESO+, inventory managment is really a chore without it.

Why don't you try it out and see if ESO+ suits you? If not, you can allways unsubscribe.

I do a lot questing, housing, BG, dungeon and some trials. So far there has been a few times that I lost connection, or reaction time was out of league. But I can still count that on both hands.
And so the Elder Scrolls foretold. You will be shy, and I will be bold.

Oh did I mention that there’s been a snipe desynchronise issue for years allowing new players to kill good players. Just stack damage and press one button (focus aim) repeatedly and 10 snipes will hit the player before 1 actually registers. Just sit back and watch that skilled player slide along ground defenceless until the broken game catches up.

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

What a lot of the players here either don't get, or refuse to get, is that they represent a tiny percentage of of what most people do in the game, trials and cyrodil. Only something like 5% of the player base does those activities. They do however make the most noise on the forum.

Most people don't touch either, and have very little trouble playing the game, like me. These parts of the game, particularly on certain servers, like pc eu, do have problems. The hyperbole used by some people here doesn't help.

The forum is pretty good when it comes to looking for information on how to do stuff. Anything more than that, and it degenerates into childish bickering. There's a bunch of people here who would be better off moving onto another games and forums, for their sakes and ours.

I am not into it myself, but the housing section of the forum is supposed to be the best behaved part.

I suspect that unless the general attitude of people here changes, then zos will either bring down the ban hammer hard, or shut down the forum. The latter would be a pity.

The forum does show the general lack of maturity and ability to make rational discussion without descending into bickering. Make of that what you will.

I hope you continue to enjoy the game. Have fun!

TLDR: Ignore anything resembling what is supposed to be a discussion, and focus on the obtaining information bits. Most players ignore the forums for a reason.

OP you could have googled some of all those vidoes that shows how bad this issue is. Especially on PC/EU. yes you're lucky because you play NA and that's the only server ZOS cares about. They've never given a hoot about the EU server and frankly I can't recommend the game to anyone who plans to play on EU. And for those in Europe the lag across the Atlantic often makes the NA server equally unplayable if you plan endgame content.
In fact you being so new I don't think you've gotten to endgame content yet. Come back when you've tried to do vet dlc trials and we can talk. Or Cyrodiil in one of the normal (ie not the under 50) campaign. Then we can talk. Even NA have issues there but EU is worse.

As for frightening new players away I think it's only fair to let them know what they're in for in the longer run. Sure initial play, overland and questing are overall okay-ish, but for anyone who plans to stick around and do other stuff too... well performance sucks.

No-one is denying or downplaying the issues - which are hugely variable depending on platform/geographic location/game activity - but what he is saying that venting off to a new player who is just bombling around enjoying the basic game does not solve the issues or address them and in fact benefits no-one.

Leave the newbie alone to have fun and let them come to whatever issues exist when they get to their end game.

Gamers love to bash what they love. Especially on official forums, where they feel they're more or less "talking to the devs".
    That's one thing.
PC/NA runs smoother and better than PC/EU (higher population density, and perhaps less care from ZOS - at least, so say some).

However, it feels strange that you don't feel any performance issues in Cyrodiil, because anyone, good or bad, critical or not, will feel issues there (whether they consider them game-breaking or fun-breaking or not is another thing). It is said that most performance issues are caused by CP calculations. Many high-end PvP guilds play on non-CP campaigns for that reason : those campaigns run amazingly smoothly.

I believe this is the reason why you don't feel the issues : those issues are greatly exaggerated on forums, but they're there, and if you don't feel them, it's either because you play on no-CP campaigns, or because you have no CP yet yourself. Or both.

Glad you enjoy the game. That's the whole point :-)

ESO is awesome when it comes to exploring, house decorating and listening to these town bards.
Outisde of that its a laggy mess.
it is all positive and praise there.
Reddit is all about rainbow gamer dads "oh loook this NPC is so beautiful i've made a picture of it!".
Look in wow classic section - game gets layered, mass pvp is imposible due to poor optimisation and lags, forum explodes in complains, meanwhile reddit on its own "woah i've made it to the 15 lvl, me and my wife happy!". Makes me vomit each time iam trying to read it.
