I know a lot is being discussed about how often, how long maintenance, delayed and not delayed etc...

Maybe some people can shed some insight; besides patching updates; what is actually being done during maintenance?

    There is no patching during maintenance.

    When patching is being done it is referred to as Patch Maintenance.

    I guess server maintenance is something we will never see the benefit of. It's just general behind the scene checks and updates.

    They change the dead hamsters that had powered the EU Server and the dead horses from the NA one.
    And, as per last maintenance, they randomly delete entries in the login database!

    The unofficial reason is "To give us players an excuse to do something besides play ESO 24/7." For example, do laundry, take your first shower in a week, take your dog for an extended walk, go outside and get some sunlight, fresh air, and exercise (weather-permitting, obviously), and other things that most other people do besides play video games.

    The real reason is deploy patches, server upkeep, debug stuff, ensure all components of a server are optimal, and in general keep ESO running smoothly.

    Actually, this ZOS post might explain it a bit better:

    This one is rather long. With a 6 hour maintenance window, my guess is that they're changing the pictures on the loading screens.

    What year will that be implemented?

    Nah. I think they've been in an infinite loading screen this whole time and the real maintenance starts now.

    @arena25 hit it exactly.

    Remember without maintenance we would never be able to login and play. I put it as more important than patching.

    Well, if it's anything like the maintenance I'm doing at work... our server maintenance ranges from HW upgrades to cache cleaning to OS updates, while patch maintenance is about updates on application software (meaning pretty much any software above OS level). With or without DB updates, depending on what our developers devolped over the course of the week.

    Im not 100% sure what maintenance actaully is, but we do know some things about maintenance: Server maintenance is at the very least something that takes far longer than the timeframe specified in the yellow maintenance banner on the top of the forum page.

    It’ll be database backups or most likely reindexing/rebuilds
    May also involve file copies or other file tasks. Could also involve server tasks such as reboots, windows patches , security patches, database version upgrades, .net fixes etc
    May also involve network cabling or physical server tasks
