I played 15 years of WoW and finally decided to give ESO a shot after having some time off due to the COVID crisis and I must say, I am extremely impressed.

I never bothered reading the quest text in any MMO before but this game is different. I was legitimately invested in the Coldharbour storyline and my rescued companions, the side quests are usually great and I'm truly impressed by the villains I encountered so far.

Just finishing the intro story, got teleported to the Redguard island and I'm pretty excited to see where the game goes from here.

I'm sure no one cares but cheers! This game is a breath of fresh air for me.

Great to see another fellow player appreciate this part of the game! Yes, we do care, for many the promise of neat questing stories is what made us faithfully play TES games until we came to ESO.

And here, yes, there are a lot of nifty quests. Yeah, some are nothing special, simple "go there and fetch/kill that" requests all too common to MMORPGs... but a lot of the questings have a really neat story behind them, be it mainquest or some nice sidequests... and yes, villains that range from "almost agree with" to "love to hate", as well as friendly NPCs with the same range, some you wanna punch in the face for being such twa... uhm... foolish people, and others you might wanna have on a squeeze pillow for your bedroom... ;)

And yes, there will also be quests with shocking twists in the middle. Some of them more then others. From unexpected betrayals to plans going awry, from hidden dangers to things that prove to be more then they seem, ESO has it all for those players that take the time to enjoy the stories to experience!

So... go and have even more fun experiencing all those stories, and when you get to the dungeons, don't PUG with speedrun freaks, group with people who also want to take the time to enjoy the scenery, listen to the stories, sniff the flowers (and then pick them for alchemy ingredients)! ;)

I agree, i came over when BFA expansion in Wow just lost its luster back in Oct, and have been doing nothing but story and exploring since. I am still not done with the side story quests in many zones, which are entertaining (especially rigurt, rhazam-dar, and sheogorath). I am amazed at all the voice acting, and immersion this game has, like npc's talking about you when you get near, remember what you did, etc.

    Enjoy the journey!

Yes, the story is mostly well-written. It's the matter of its consistency. Too many freedom leads to "fractured but whole" game experience as I call it. If you, obviously, don't know an order in which it's better to proceed with the story.

Also, I want to provide you with several examples of badly written stories in ESO. Spoiler alert, I guess...
Freedom's Chains — quest in Bangkorai about werewolve village. There are too many problems with this quest both logical and technical. Look, for example, here.

Another my personal "favorite": Murkmire DLC Prologue. The DLC's mainstory itself is alright, even interesting, but the prologue... Akatosh, give me strength to put it short. It's disgusting, alright? Starting from how many idiots are involved into Cyrodilic Collections business -- I never skipped dialogues playing RPG so fast in my entire life! -- to how many (150) radiant quests one need to complete in order to get the achievement. An unbearable experience! Also, there is Lady Laurent quest in Murkmire. Well, f**k! Poor Stibbons! Why the hell should I help her in this obvious mockery? And, yeah, "previously" Lady Laurent changed opinion about her manservant like a lot! Guess, it was wrote by just the same person, who worked on the prologue part. I stopped playing the game for a good while after this piece of work, and this is not a joke.

Now, the Psijic Order questline is a standard for lazy game design. You'll see.

There is probably something else, sure, but those cases are the most memorable to me.

For a long time player, I would say the story is great

    BUT

The stories are getting repetitive especially for main quests, the story structure for each vanilla zone and chapters are quite similar. If you care more about lore, then they would feel somewhat different, but again they are VERY similar structure wise

A big threat -> investigate -> find out something fishy -> the secondary bosses show up -> beating them either one by one or together -> some preparations before final boss -> beats final boss

And during those process almost garantee a minor character sacrifice, showing how serious the situation has become, and making some main character doubt themselves, and around final phrase an important character dies/missing

And then horay you save the entire Tamriel yet again! (in ESO if not for you ALL the regions would have nuke-level threats)

Trying to save the world knowing that you WILL save it regardless feels... rather boring, alas, it's a struggle for long time story-focus players only

ESO has fully voiced quest dialogue.

    This is a vital point.

While I come from a background of being in WoW since 2006 (permanently leaving all Blizzard games in 2019) My other main MMO is FFXIV.

FFXIV has an equally great story. In fact I'd say the main story there is vastly better. But most of it is unvoiced. The main story gets sparse voicing until the 4.0 expansion - and is even still only a third voiced there.

If you read it all; it's amazing... but even for a lore fiend who is extremely into their story reading it all wears you down a lot...

Here the voicing pulls you in right away - you notice logic flaws a lot less as a result (I spotted issues in FFXIV on my first play through, it's in my second character to repeat any given part of ESO that I start analyzing 'writer hacks' that don't hold up).

Plus all the random NPCs with voiced commentary - As long as they aren't telling me how long they have been looking for me... ;) they're great.

I know the Star Wars MMO (SWTOR) also had full voicing when it came out, but fell flat on players until years later and a lot of revisions. I guess ESO also was a failed MMO until One Tamriel - but not due to the voicing cutting into the story budget (if it did, I don't see it - and everybody claimed to see it when Star Wars came out).

The voicing here is amazing - it keeps your eyes from glazing over from long walls of text like this post of mine here of mine... which happens to me constantly in FFXIV.

(As a side note, it is funny that some of the best MMOs these days were all 'failed MMOs' when they came out: ESO, FFXIV, and I hear SWTOR.)

I want to check out the DLCs so I need to find a guide as to which order I should do them in.

If you do the DLCs in the order of their release you can be sure to have it right. Since I'm not much of a group-content player I can't say much about the dungeon DLCs. They have a story each, but usually that's not (much) connected to anything else.

For the actual DLC zones the order should be as follows:
((- Imperial City)) - This is mainly a PvP zone, so I'd skip it, unless you have friends to do it with or are interested in PvP. It has some nice quests, too, but you can still do those later, when you've done all the others, instead of loosing playing time to being killed by PvPers while trying to do so.
    (- Orsinium)
    (- Thieves Guild)
    (- Dark Brotherhood)
    - Morrowind
    - Clockwork City
    - Summerset
    (- Murkmire)
    - Elsweyr
    - Dragonhold

Those in brackets are stand-alones that don't have any connection with any other's story.
Morrowind, Clockwork City and Summerset have a common story arc, as do Elsweyr and Dragonhold.

Since ESO is full of recurring characters it's the most fun to keep to the sequence, though. For example, when playing Elsweyr I met a character again (in a side quest) that was part of a side quest in Orsinium, and his story was continued from there. The character and the quest do work just as well when you haven't met him in Orsinium before, but it is much more fun to recognize him, having been there when he made the decision that led him here.
The same goes for some characters from the base game zones, so maybe you'd want to do the zones of Cadwell's Silver and Gold first. But I have to confess that I couldn't bring myself to finish Cadwells Gold up to today, despite having played through all the DLC zones. Gold for me would be the Ebonheart Pact storyline, and... well, I just don't like the guys. And lots of their quests. Just didn't want to do those things, so I left them out. (I did lots of side quests there, but only some of the main quests.)
I'd strongly recommend playing through Reaper's March (part of the Aldmeri Dominion) before going to Elsweyr, though. Since it introduces your character to the Khajiit and their culture, forging quite the bond, it is a beautiful prelude to going to their homeland (Elsweyr, Dragonhold) later.

And yes, there are a very few quests that are written very, very poorly, railroading the player into stupid decisions that would have been avoidable in half a dozen ways if the writer hadn't gone for cheap drama or even cheaper forced bad-assery. There even are one or two where the dialogue leads to your character deciding things that are the very opposite of what you wanted, because the dialogue is interpreted in a stupid way. But those are few and far between !

So, in whatever order you decide to do it - enjoy the wonderful world of stories and characters that is an Elder Scrolls game ! (Even if it's just the MMO version. ;) )

With the sheer amount of quests int he game there will of course be some duds among the bunch. But the quality of the writing and voice acting is usually top notch. But again, some is not as good as others.

But one thing I enjoy about playing everything chronologically is that eventually you run across recurring characters who will have a little extra dialogue and maybe whole conversation chains about what they've been up to since last you met.

But if you do things out of order, that's OK too as in The Elder Scrolls, there is something called a dragon break where basically time splits and some characters remember things that may not have happened yet, etc. It might be convenient for keeping the game and stories self contained so you can play in whatever order you want, but it is canon (as of Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall). Lots of good lore to dive into if you're so inclined.

If you're on the Redguard island, I'm excited for you to experience the next island, Betnikh. The story there is pretty good and it ends with a choice that the first time I played through it I stood there thinking about what choice to make for a long time.

What some people don't notice either is that if you talk to important quest NPCs during and after the quest they often have additional dialogue, and your choices can change what they say. Whatever choice you make in Betnikh talk to everyone after and feel the ramifications of your choice.

I love games like that. Honestly WoW had some great stories too, but having to read the quest text doesn't have the same impact as actually hearing the emotion in a voice.

Nice! I love the questing in ESO too. Last month, I finally got up to date with every quest (except IC) in the game. I did them in order too. I actually did all 3 alliance faction zones before starting DLC, as there are recurring characters from the various faction stories that show up in DLCs.

Otherwise I did them like this:
Orsinium > Thieves Guild > Dark Brotherhood > Morrowwind > Clockwork City > Summerset > Murkmire > Elsweyr > Dragonhold.

I also ran the Wrathstone dungeons before playing Elsweyr and the Scalebreaker dungeons before Dragonhold. There is some connecting story there, so it felt relevant.

Also, I did Craglorn after all of the above, when I ran out of DLC zones. The story doesn't really relate to anything else going on in the game, and (unless you have a group) you need to be higher level to do most of the content.

I've done the Harrowstorm dungeons, and now I'm just waiting for Greymoor!

Make sure you read the books and notes in the game. They fill in the background with the stories. Also, every Delve or Dungeon has a story. You just have to read what is there to uncover it if the NPCs are not talking.

I would also add to talk to NPC’s at the end of each zone. After you turn in the last quest and before heading into the next zone talk to everyone and you’ll get some great content in there as well. Additionally talking to NPC after other major milestone quests (the ones where you get skill points as a reward) will also get you some neat dialogue.

Some zones it’s worth doing every side quest you find such as Vvardenfell and Northern Elsweyr. Some of them are tedious as hell but the payoff is worth it like finding all the mural pieces or engraving all the tomb etchings. You’ll probably want a companion app or add on because finding them all organically is very difficult.

Also sometimes it’s not worth just going from quest marker to quest marker and finishing one before starting another. Many quests run concurrently and intertwine in a neat way so it’s ok to have 2-3 open in one zone. You’ll see a lot of that in the Orsinium DLC in Wrothgar. It happens in other zones too. The EB quest line has a bunch of those as well.

Anyhow happy questing, it the main reason I play this game too.

A short story-progression order overview might be...
    • "Planemeld" Mainstory: Coldharbour tutorial - starter islands - alliance story regions - coldharbour assault - final battle to kick Molag in his Bal and reclaim your soul. (Mages & Fighters guild stories en passant in the story regions)
    • Cyrodil (Yeah, mostly PvP, but there is a little story to be found as well, and all of it happens in the same time frame as the mainstory)
    • Imperial City (sort of a quick mini-sequel to the planemeld story, but... not really neccessary to do as its a ganky place)
    • Cadwells (optional): Silver starter islands - silver story regions - gold starter islands - gold story regions (good for skill points!)
    • Craglorn (most of it is soloable these days, but some places and questings are still made for full groups)
    • Orsinium
    • Thieves Guild & Dark Brotherhood (technically standalone, but its a help if you finished cadwells since some sidequests will take you all over tamriel...)
    • "Daedric Triad" cycle: "Missing Prophecy" prequel - Morrowind - "Knives & long Shadows" prequel - Clockwork City - "Through Veil Darkly" prequel - Summerset (Psijic guild story found there)
    • "Cyrodillic Collections" prequel - Murkmire
    • "Year of the Dragon" cycle: "Halls of Colossus" prequel - Elsweyr - "Dragonguard Legacy" prequel - Dragonhold
    • "Greymoor" cycle: "Coven" prequel (rest coming as the year progresses)
More detailed explainations have been mentioned...

You don't need an add-on for that, just look into your quest journal, there you have all the currently active quests sorted according to what story they belong to.

Most of the times its pretty obvious from where you got the quest anyhow... if its a "Comrade, a word" messenger at the fighters guild, or Shalidors ghost going "Ah, adept..." at the mages guild, or Varens projection when entering a city for the mainstory... and pretty much everything else is regional stories, except the DLC starters (Craglorn cart, sturga looking for you, letter at the mages guild, cyrodillic collections, the two people in every outlaw refugee, etc.)

And yeah, we often wish there was an option to disable premature quest starters... leave all of them inactive until you progress properly through the story (tho still enable-able by hand if someone wants to "skip ahead"...)
