What if it cost gold to /zone or /yell in zone chat

Sort of like the increasing cost on cooldown when you Travel to Player.
First one is free but the next one will cost gold. If you wait long enough, that cost ticks down to nothing and it's free again.
/yell always costs gold.

EDIT: For people who haven't put it together yet:
  • First one's free. If you're having an actual conversation you can get together and use /say, group up, or /tell
  • If you want to spam rubbish might as well gold sink you while the non-existent GMs track you down.
  • Some games don't even let you talk, and especially not /yell, without buying a consumable.

No, its a means of communication not every one uses discord or other voice chat alternatives.

If someone is being an idiot in zone chat add them to your ignore list, if your list is full remove some people and add the one currently bothering you in the zone your in.

It wont work. If anything it will encourage then to post more. If you really want to get rid of trolls put them on ignore and move on. You can also disable /yell, /say, /zone in your settings.

What they want is attention and to provoke a reaction. Better to ignore and move on.

Apparently some players consider using /say too much to be spamming chat. I was questing in a zone when someone /zone posted "so-and-so stop spamming chat." I was curious to see what so-and-so had posted that was deemed to be spam, so I scrolled back through the previous posts but couldn't see a single post from so-and-so! I concluded that they must have been using /say and I was too far away from them.

I generally try to ignore the chat box as much as possible since I'm usually doing crafting writs or playing solo. But every so often I'll see a post that I'll respond to-- a request for training gear, a plea for help with a group boss, a newbie question about something I can answer, etc. I do see a lot of posts that I might classify as spam, not to mention a lot of off-topic posts about body parts that I classify as juvenile and repugnant, but personally I would never think to report anyone for spamming. Ignore seems to be the best solution to problem posters.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

Yes. I don't think the exact distances have even been given, but /say is for people in close proximity, /yell goes a bit further and /zone is for the whole zone.

So for instance, if you are familiar with Cyrodiil. /say will cover most of the inner Keep where as /yell will cover most of the outer Keep.

Maybe you should stop spamming /zone or /yell chat? Then this idea wouldn't penalize you at all.
If people being allowed to spam ESO /zone or /yell with nonsense endlessly makes it "unique"... that's a feature we don't need to have and the people defending it need to be gone.

well then make another suggestion? all the spamming in zone chat is clearly annoying and an issue - i dont know anyone i play with that hasnt turned off zone chat by now unless they are looking for trials in craglorn...is that the better solution - not using a system instead of improving it?

No. 1 way to improve things would be to increase the number of players you can have on your ignore list.

I never use zone chat unless I'm specifically looking for something (usually in Cyro, sometimes elsewhere for those shareable daily quests). For the rest I have created new tabs for all guilds combined, for my main guild and for groups (whisper enabled in all of them). This makes game so much more enjoyable. ;)

I also use an addon for filtering the zone chat. I don't see anything Russian (might change with the new update) and no WTT, WTS etc.

Ignore is a half solution. You protect yourself, but that person is still free to harass other people.
We're definitely lucky we have @name ignore instead of outdated toon-specific ignore like SWTOR, though. So definitely better than nothing.

If the player is truly spamming, report them. If they're simply annoying to you, grow a thicker skin.

Other people who also have an ignore list that they can use. :)

The problem is, you want the annoying people to be shut out of Zone Chat. That's great. I agree. But what about the non-annoying people? The people who for instance who are running dolmen groups. The people who answer player's questions and give helpful advice. The people who chat about the lore. The people who want to just want to have some friendly chat?

And what about people who find the things I've just listed as non-annoying as actually being annoying? Shouldn't they also get to control what they get to see?

So whilst not perfect, the ignore system allows this to happen. It allows the user to filter out what they see a 'noise' and leave the 'signal'. Any other method just doesn't have that ability to distinguish what is/isn't annoying and to do something about it fairly.

Notice that the suggestion is only for /zone and /yell.
For what you are talking about there are other solutions.
People running dolmens don't need to spam their group frequently and the first message is free with cooldown. People joining groups don't need to spam either.
People who want to respond to questions can /tell in response to a question in zone.
People who want to chat can group, or /tell or show up and /say. It is unlikely that your conversation with other people is relevant to the entire zone anyway.

i have no one on my ignore list ...i simply know that 99% of zone chat is worthless...but keeping it open i find the 1% of pure gold... if you are unable to filter irrelevant info with your own brain well that's your problem...not the games problem

What if jumping cost gold? You have first jump for free and 10s cooldown, if you jump within this time the cost will increase progressively. Should drastically reduce number of jump spammers in Cyrodiil and duels.

    This is backwards thinking.
Zone chat abuse led to making it worthless. Instead of accepting that, how about combatting that abuse so that it's use becomes more legitimate more of the time?
