And there's one simple reason for that; it's just totally unbalanced and people grief and generally abuse their power. You must remember that a lot of juveniles play these games, and if they can find a way to be rude or annoy other people to somehow make themselves feel better or 'cooler' they will. They're not about finding stimulating, challenging and enjoyable gaming experiences anymore, they're about being 'leet', showing off, getting the coolest gear or some other material possession/s to fulfill whatever hedonistic end. Motivations are almost entirely self-centred.
It's unfortunate and sad, but that is the reality of the popular MMOs these days. You only have to have a look at the emphasis placed on 'leveling' and 'auction houses', or listen to /zone chat, to see how many's priorities are completely skewed away from what the very essence of an MMO is.
Was it always so? No. In the past it wasn't that way, but the times have changed, seemingly concurrent with the ever increasing popularity of MMOs
