Are CROWN CRATES worth it (video)

I made a video on the drop percentages of items in crown crates. I used a website that tracks crown crate drops and a crate simulator. At the end of the video I explain in detail my simulator results and go over the $AUD/Gold costs.

This video is purely about the numbers and my own results. I did not talk about my opinion on crown crates and any assumptions about my opinion are just that.

I hate videos like this because it always reignites my hatred for the system. I despise crates and I despise them for ever putting them in. If there was a catalog of stuff you could just buy, great. The current system - nothing but ire from me juxtaposition with how shoddy the game runs.

Why even bother? Curiosity?

I'm pretty sure that nobody who actually tries for the rares cares about the drop rate. They see it; they want it; they either spend a set amount and quit if it doesn't pull, or they pay until they get the drop they're after. Very little room for middle ground here, because any other options are based solely on luck.

Precisely.
Anyone who has been invested (mentally, emotionally, financially (DLCs and in-game currency and cosmetics MTX and such) in online video games for the past decade KNOWS the perceived "value" attached to loot crates among the general video gaming population.
Very few people are going to argue in favor of them in the community of any online game.
Conducting these little experiments for public consumption is just a waste of time.

Once you have millions of gold, there's nothing much to spend it on in eso aside from furnishings and crown trading, so you may as well buy crates with gold if you like the stuff. I've spent somewhere between 30-50 million gold on crown crates over the course of playing the game, and if I hadn't it would just be sitting in my inventory figuratively collecting dust.

Crown crates are a good "gold burn" if you like the contents, but probably not worthwhile to buy with your own crowns unless you can afford it.

The crates have only ever been worth it if you want a bunch of random items from that selections, they're never worth buying to try and get a specific item.

Also for those who find Faunter's Crown Crates site useful, just wanted to say he does have a Patreon to help fund the costs of the site.

Many in the 40k community would never pay forgeworld prices and think it’s insane so it’s all a matter of perspective.

this basically. if you want just one thing - its not worth it. if that one thing is radiant apex mount? DEFINITELY not worth it. if you want a bunch of pets and costumes and some furnishings, etc? then its worth it.

my personal measuring stick for whether I buy crates or not is... do I want more then half the items in those crates? if the answer is yes? I buy couple of packs of 15. if the answer is no - I look at items I do want, and then decide if I want them badly enough to buy at least one 15 pack to get enough gems to buy those items outright should they not drop. sometimes the answer is - yes. sometimes the answer is no. depends on the items.

well, as a titan owner myself, i'd say those things will never just vanish. either they are displayed or sold, if you never use them again. all the in game stuff will be lost at some point, though. which is, in my eyes, a huge difference in value.

stupid things when it comes to luxuries is a relative term. something that sounds stupid to you because its outside of your scope of interests or priorities - could be awesome for someone else. before you say "its just digital pixels - you don't get to keep them" theater or concert tickets for example even for balcony seats can cost close to $100 per person. you may want to go out to eat beforehand, or afterwards. that's more money. the entire experience lasts a few hours and then.. its gone. best you can keep from it is memories and maybe some pictures you took...... kinda like with playing video games if you think about it.

and it doesn't mean that people don't work hard enough to be able to afford these. there are plenty of people who work exhausting minimum wage jobs and still put away a little each month to be able to afford that experience they really wanted - eventually. its not a waste if you truly genuinely enjoy it.

and to reiterate. I'm not defending crown crates practices specifically, but rather general "people spending their money on their hobby" idea.

I play eso for fun not when I’m depressed. If 40k (which I quit after a long time) or litteraly anything else was better to spend money on I wouldn’t be buy crates lol. In these dark times of gaming and media in general I have nothing to so end money on lol. I can’t say I’ve seen any good movies, shows, or video games come out that have been worth it. Only Persona 5 royal. ESO may not be the best game but it is a solid 7-8 out of 10 depending on expansion and keeps me playing something as opposed to being bored out of my mind lol.

Gaming these days it’s hard to get good fully complete games like the Witcher anymore. I barely buy 2 games a year and have no other hobbies as I’m just a natural loner. The only other thing I do is read learn and make money lol. I’m a minimalist in a weird way. If I wasn’t spending it on eso it would just keep accumulating forever lol.

ever go out to dinner - for fun of experiencing different flavors and a conversation, rather then basic necessity of nourishment? movies? concerts? go on vacation trips? because all of those things also just vanish. you experience them and then... they are gone. value of non necessities is in the eye of the beholder.

Crown crates are a way for people with real money to trade for in game gold. The devs don't want to sell "1M gold, $40-50 dollars" but with crown gifting they can have it happen.

As someone who buys crown crates with gold, its not that different than buying furniture or mounts, its just a tad more costly because the only thing you're guranteed is gems. So I calculate how many gems I would get if I got nothing I wanted (usually 100 per 15 pack) and then take that number and find out how many gems it would cost to buy that item.

Crown gifting is one of the few things I spend gold on anymore so its the last good gold sink for players like me with 10M+ gold.

Not unless you like and want pretty much everything in them, no.

If you like all the apex mounts in a season and most other things (and you have the Crowns/cash), then go for it, otherwise normally best to leave it.

Unless you have a ton of Crowns saved and there is, literally, nothing else you want to buy.

Though they don't like the current state of the gifting system.
There are many issues with it, one is the inability to control it.

Don't buy crates if you don't want to gamble. It's the gamble that is fun to me, but if it bothers you then don't buy them.

I've bought a few over the years, and most of the items I got aren't often used. But I enjoyed the crates for the few moments of entertainment that they were.
