Maintenance for the week of April 6:
• [COMPLETE] ESO Store and Account System for maintenance – April 9, 9:00AM EDT (13:00 UTC) - 6:00PM EDT (22:00 UTC)

With all the money Zenimax is making, why not invest in some new server upgrades?

Because it's a software issue, not a hardware one.

I keep hearing this, for a long time now. But do you have any evidence to back that claim up? I'm not challenging your claim, just a genuine question because I'm intrigued. We have seen lots of patches and even a huge software update which required the entire game to be re downloaded just recently, yet we still have major issues.

People generally go from their own life experience of knowing that you can perform maintenance on your PC for example, you can tweak software, install better software for your hardware. But everyone knows if you want real change in your system, nothing ever beats an entire hardware upgrade.

If you have any information which clearly shows it's exclusively a software problem, then please pray tell.

I think the evidence would be the fact that the performance gets worse with each patch which would indicate a software issue, unless you’re suggesting they are downgrading their hardware with each patch which is very unlikely.

I don't know about it getting worse and worse. The game has always seemed clunky and slow. To my eye and experience I would say there is a strong link between the amount of players online actively engaged in taxing the servers and performance. I would think that is obvious to anyone who has played Cyrodiil on a busy night or even more so during a mid year mayhem event.

Considering they've lowered the population cap multiple times already and there’s rarely even a que in the main campaign, cant really blame population. Even in pve areas like craglorn and grahtwood theres only a fraction of the players that used to be there.

One way to reduce server load would be for ZOS to find a way so we no longer have to log in every character every day. For things like daily crafting writs, horse training, etc. Just let us do all those things from one character, and mail the experience/crafting experience to the corresponding character for which we did it. Or automatically add it to the corresponding character while that character remains offline, so mails for something like this wouldn't have to be stored also.

There are probably some more things characters do daily, which I forgot about... but you get the idea.

Besides this saving server load, this also reduces login and load screen times for players.

Indeed, as I say though, it's all very vague. I would urge caution to players just out right believing them though, after all their track record of getting a grip on the performance issues is not impressive and peoples patience is getting very stretched.

Just remember that some people in the forum are not going to give ZOS credit for successes with performance. Why? There is no one single performance problem, and no one fix, so every time ZOS fixes a performance problem, it might make life better for some people, but others will run out and complain that ZOS did nothing. In fact, ZOS did not do "nothing", but it did not fix their problem, so perception is that nothing was fixed, and that contributes to frustration. I am not saying it is unjustified, but it also tends to drown out whatever success that they do have.

It does not help that they really screwed things up with Harrowstorm and have not been able to push out a fix for that. I am wondering whether, were it not for the ability desync, whether more people would be able to see an incremental performance improvement.

I thought that the main fix for harrowstorm was the download patcher?

Also client side performance fixes and changes to how some combat is handled on the server to improve performance.
