Armor making devs: What's with your obsession with butt and crotch flaps?

Every armor set seems to have a flap of some kind. Sometimes a crotch flap, sometimes a butt flap, sometimes both. Sometimes they've got hip armor, or books on the hip, or scrolls.

What's the deal with that? Why does every armor have to have at least one of the above? Can't we just get more normal, flapless sets?

I mean, I'd be all for this, if a flimsy length of cloth flapping at the slightest movement or breeze stood any chance against an armored knee.

Agree. Also, the tassets. The magical, floating tassets they feel the need to put on e v e r y t h i n g.

Well, I suppose we should all be happy they don´t have the Warcraft shoulder pads that make you look like you are constantly strapped into a spaceship ejection seat.

I think some artists get stuck in a rut of what they like looking at.

In guild wars 2 almost all medium armour is trenchcoats. Game has at least 30 trenchcoats. It's a meme.

I dont like those flaps either but you gotta protect certain areas. I would rather take arrow in the knee than where the flap is.

Inb4 white knight zos design defence comment with arguments regarding realistic armors, that doesnt necessarily reflects said white knights true feelings about armor flaps in ESO, but a white knight must white knight.

    Try Medium mercenary pants op.

I don't mind if the design has both; but the ones with a front flap and no back flap look ... stupid.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

There's a lot of armor I refuse to use for this exact reason. It's completely unnecessary, and they follow the mesh of the largest possible body type meaning that for most people they just stick out in mid-air and look really ridiculous. Same thing with the stupid hip-plates that just float in mid-air. If you can't make the whole piece of armor scale properly with the character model, give us the option to turn the extra crap off.

I think at some point, in gaming, there was a drive for decency, modesty, realism and a lack of (perceived) sexism.

Bikini armour was deemed to be sexist/unrealistic, by some people; which was obviously true, in the latter case at least.

So, as is often the case, the pendulum swung way over to the other side...

As a result, the Redguard armour had its neckline raised, for no apparent reason, many of the newer costumes started becoming more prim and proper and/or unisex and people were (apparently) assumed to be in danger of balking at the mere notion of seeing even a clothed crotch, or butt, without some kind of modesty flap over it.

Which is kind of ridiculous, especially considering that you can still run around (exposing part of one buttock) in a bathing towel, or in a Fang Lair chest, or in a little crop top and mini skirt costume.

None of which are realistic fighting options, so why are we tied into the idea of all armour now having to be (supposedly) realistic?

Really, there should be something for everyone.

From hyper-realistic, super-practical/modest armours, ranging to bikini type options, for those who want them and everything in between.

In fact, the "in between" part should probably make up the bulk of it; as that is probably where most people's tastes lie.

Certainly, you should be able to hide any and all flaps, if you prefer, as well as shoulders.

    Good.

...and it doesn't have to, anyway.

You can always make the legs more loose-fitting, like the Redguard legs and/or you can make the tops longer, to cover the crotch/butt area, if you want, without making the entire outfit/costume prim and totally sexless.

Of course, you then need to make sure the tops fit properly and don't jut-out way beyond the char's own hip/butt dimensions, as the longer tops generally do, currently.

Even the Fang Lair Legs don't look like spandex, though, as they are slightly loose fitting:

Many otherwise good chest pieces are ruined by the tassets/floating elbow pads. Also, making outfits for female characters has always been harder for me. A lot of floating pieces/clipping issues that would not happen on a more bulky male character, many chest pieces looking wrong on females, etc... There is just less good looking options on female characters in my opinion. At least they keep adding good new styles.

At this point, WoW armor would be a breath of fresh air.

They really do like putting the flappy things everywhere: front, back, on the sides; even when you're wearing a skirt, like really, what's the point there?

I like the front and back flaps... I would not wear armor without it. I also prefer armor to have hip flaps.

Just so I understand.. you're upset that they dont make more armor that is basically just a breastplate with regular pants?

Personally, I think any sort of armor that doesnt have hip or front/ back plating or flaps looks silly.

The complaint is that it's on everything. i.e, lack of variety. And even on cloth "armor"/robes, which wouldn't have those things even for the Realism™ crowd. Not everything is knight-type overlapping plate. (thinking about it, 'realistic' thief-y Medium armor likely wouldn't have all sorts of dangly/clanky crap hanging off it, either.)

Faulds are important pieces of armor in many different sets and certain styles, and will fit with their armor. Key is certain styles.

One should be able to look at armor an know if the faulds (or flaps/skirts) look natural. If it doesn't, then it isn't meant to be. Specifically. Many armors had faulds, many did not. Falling away from faulds isnt a bad thing either.

They just need a "disable flaps" or "hide flaps" option.

I dislike pretty much all the flaps. Hip, crotch, butt... Hell, I don't like the floating knee and elbow pads that are on many sets.
