ESO is more CPU intensive than GPU, but still you should at least invest in a basic dedicated GPU if you want to play games that aren't potato quality.

Yes, ZOS made undocumented changes that affects a small, specific playerbase without offering any solutions on even providing some information on the problem. There's, most likely, nothing that can be done.

I've talked with another person that ran into same issue when the Harrowstorm patch came out on PC. Once similar reports started coming in, it became apparent that they all were using some version of intel graphics card (intel iris pro 5200 in the other person's case). He tried a bunch of options - updating drivers, deleting caches, reinstalling the game, tweaking video options, etc. - nothing worked. After a while, he finally got an answer from support, that said "their requirements have risen and my PC do not longer meet the requirements". The support page for "minimum requirements" hasn't been updated in a while, however and only requires a graphics card that supports DirectX 11 (which, at least intel iris pro 5200, supposedly does).

There are a bunch of similar threads around that you can find on the forums and people have been trying various solutions - some claiming that it partially helps, although the person I talked to ended up buying a new computer altogether.

The 5500 gpu in built into the cpu, and uses the laptop memory. It's usually a small portion - 1 or 2 GB - but it's still shared. That's also why it's not showing vram.

The main reason why your friend's HD 5500 chipset no longer correctly displays the shadows is due to the way the game draws them. The API support is there, and that's not the issue - it's just an issue with the mapping applying to the plane properly. Unfortunately, it's a hardware limitations and there's not really a one-size-fits-all fix.

He can get what's called an external gpu, or egpu. There's some that come with everything together, and you just plug it into your laptop and the wall. There's also kits where you supply your own graphics card, and kits where you need to supply the card and power supply. In any case, you'd still need to buy a bunch of stuff, even if it can be relatively inexpensive.

On a side note, the GTX 460 was a great mid-range Fermi card. I used to to capture 1080p gameplay footage of SWTOR back in 2012 for Youtube using a GTX 460. The HD 5500 suffers next to the GTX 460 in memory speed (LDDR3 vs GDDR5), ROPs (1 vs 32), Shader Units (24 vs 336), and TMUs (4 vs 56).

if he lives in the usa and files taxes or is on social security or disability or something that he gets a 1099 yearly then he shoul get a 1200$ check from the govt in the next month or so... For 500-600$ you can build a ryzen pc that will perform very well with eso and have good specs.

On a side note, if he had a spare ssd, yes i know that's asking lot, but if he had one i'd be curious to try installing linux on it and installing steam and running eso on linux through steam play on a version of linux using kernel 5.5 (manjaro with unstable repos enabled) just to see if performance was any better... and then trying it again by booting into an older kernel like 4.19 or so... Just curious to see how it would perform under those conditions...

lol half you don't understand that it's not about me i got a gaming pc built my own, but thx i didn't know much about labtops at all and i always thought you couldn't upgrade it like a desktop can

alright since you want an easy way out, check out cloud based gaming, you literally rent a gaming pc over the internet for a certain amount of $ a month and it streams to your computer via browser of there software. just be aware that some company's don't like this since it looks like you using an vpn getting around a firewall. I would recommend ge force Now! but ZOS's parent company, said no. If your guild is set splitting a $12? month fee then your buddy could play.
