Hello,

It seems there are big amount of eso-corona memes and jokes going around. For many reasons, could we stop them or could you restrcit them to private chats, because 1. they not funny 2.it is serious situation.

Thank you.

But everyone else can have their corona memes, right? The jokes about stockpilers, the jokes about empty shelves of toilet paper...lack of autism from the non-existent Covid-19 vaccine...

But not ESO corona virus memes...even though for some people, ESO will be exactly what they will be playing during isolation.

Maybe the topic isn’t funny...nothing is on its own, but what you can do (or maybe not you) is lighten it so it isn’t a taboo anymore.

People are using humour to get through a dark situation. It’s a way of coping,

If you don’t like them don’t read them, or turn off your chat .

The "I'm offended or I'm offended for others" attitude needs to stop. You can be offended about anything. So what if someone makes a joke you don't like? Ignore it or Walk or click away. The world is full of people that you're not going to like. But you can't just try to censor every thing you don't like.

While I understand the OP's opinion, people are people and black humour can also be a way of coping. I am in a situation where I can't visit my parents as they are in a risky age group and I need to catch a plane to see them. You can't tell people what to do, all you can do, is not share them yourself and don't engage those threads or you will prolong their life, as seen here.

People will always make fun of stupid *** before it actually hits them and/or one of their relatives dies.

Coping mechanism or not, everyone should be respectful towards those who had their lives taken by this disaster, and instead of spending time making dumb jokes on the internet we should all spend time trying to help others in our communities.

I agree with the OP, and yes I'm one of the people it's actually affected. Not only am I without work thx to the pandemic, but I'm also infected and my mother is in a critical state.

Please stop. Take it to private chats. It really isn't funny anymore.

Exactly why do you care? Some people joke about death and deceased loved ones to cope with it, how are you certain that is not what is going on? You can't read anyone's intent.

As for the serious situation, it's only serious for those that have had the luxury to forget they are mortal. Spare me.

@Nyladreas I'm with you there. I'm really not someone who is easily offended by things like sexist comments or rude jokes (so long as they're not really personal), but when it comes to health issues and situations where people can potentially die, this whole attitude of not caring about how other people feel and just going: "Well, don't read it / get a thicker skin" needs to change.
I have a chronic illness that puts me at a high risk should I catch the virus, my parents are both in their mid-sixties and my Dad had cancer before, which makes me really worried about them, too.

These things are only funny so long as no one close to you or you yourself are affected. I wish you all the best, Nyladreas, and that you make a speedy recovery!

    I agree with OP.

I'm all for humour and memes but for this I keep it where people have agreed they are okay with it.

I'm in a big European guild and a lot of our members got caught in lock-downs yesterday. There will be more tomorrow.

This is a serious situation and many people need to treat it seriously to cope.

    Have some damn respect.

Don't expect anything like empathy from MMO players. That's rarer than aetherial dust. MMOs attract people who are tired of being required to be polite and restrained in face to face encounters and want to take out their frustrations on some strangers who can't do anything about it. Best thing you can do is turn off chat in game and avoid the forum until this goes away, but there will always be some crappy thing that people think means they have to show off how edgy they can be.

You said the exact same thing as I did but on a far more polite way ngl.

It wasn't too long ago, when everybody had a "Je suis Charlie" button on their social media avatars and the world agreed that one could make jokes about everything. No exception. It wasn't too long ago when people were cheering and laughing at Ricky Gervais roasting celebrities and ***. Where was the cry for "being considerate" there?
Different people are offended by different things. Offense is always taken, not given.
If someone thinks that jokes about a virus is crossing the line, then it's the person's responsibility to avoid being offended by not listening to them. It's not "I say it's offensive, so stop it" because it is just your personal limit.

Seriously, I want the 80s back.

    [snip]

I very much agree with you that everyone is responsible for their actions.
The fundamental difference between your examples and what I was talking about is, that bullying and accusing and blaming is a direct action towards (or against) a person, whereas making general jokes or posting memes that are not targetting anyone personally is a completely different story.

True, there is a difference, which is why I said that I knew that the point you were making was to be interpreted differently, and I admit that my examples were a bit extreme. As I mentioned earlier, my own situation right now is very tense, so I can understand where OP is coming from. When you're not in the best of health (as a general thing, not just now) and you see people joking about health related issues you can't help but shake your head about the complete and utter lack of respect and empathy some people have shown here. And I really do think that as soon as it comes to a person's wellbeing, this whole attitude of not giving a *** about others needs to change.

1 - depends on the joke, and the recipient. It will get less funny when we get to the point where people just lost a loved parent/grandparent to COV-19. Which sadly is pretty much inevitable to happen to some people sooner or later - despite we all hoping that it will not happen often, that the whole thing will be contained and meds developed before it gets too bad. (Of course, the same happens with the common flu every year, so...)

2 - definitely serious. And that is why some people need to make jokes to deal with the anxiety & stress. Each has their own coping mechanism after all. Some people just -need- to make silly jokes about serious matters, because that is -their- coping mechanism. And it can be very hurtful for them to be scolded for joking when that is the only way they have to deal with the same fears and worries everyone has floating around them now. And these people make those jokes even if and when they themselves are affected, because that is the way they are, that is their way of keeping the dark feelings at bay (So, no, they don't "find it funny until they themselves suffer through it" - they joke even as they suffer from it, that's what a coping mechanism is all about).

And since we cannot look into anothers soul...

...for those who don't find it funny, perhaps try to be considerate to all, and simply ignore the jokesters jokings, even if you personally don't find it funny at all? After all, its your decidion as to how to react to a bad joke about a serious matter, if you let yourself get worked up over it and go all "spanish inquisition" on the others, or just "sigh and rolleyes" and move on...

...and for those who use jokes as their relief, perhaps try to be considerate as well and try not to overdo it, or at least keep it in places the ones who might take offense can easily avoid? Like make a discussion just for bad jokes with a big "don't look here if easily offended" disclaimer?

As for those who double down on the jokes -just- to vex the ones easily offended... go and [ censored for exceeding forum regulations of acceptable limits of speech ]!
    (Yes, that was a joke :p;) )
