Why does Alcast have Mystic Orb on a lot of mag dps bars now?

Was there a change to the Mystic Orb skill that I missed in the patch notes? I'm not one to just mindlessly copy Alcast builds but I do use his site to keep apprised of what the meta -is-. What'd I miss?

Right but does it do more damage with this patch for some reason?

Nah, it's been like this for quite a while. I don't remember when it was. Maybe Scalebreaker...? With the big skill audit?

That's what I thought, which is what made me curious about whether I missed something that would cause it to be added to bars this patch?

Well, in that case I do think you have to ask Alcast himself why he's just now adding it. Every good mag dd I know has been running it for a while now. : s

Not sure about Alcast builds but ive been using it because it ticks every half second, adds great utility and was cheaper to cast than many class skills and it did a lot of damage. No surprise that all of a sudden it becomes meta.

Cheapish for a dot, has good uptime and does a good bit of damage. And is available on all classes.

If you wanna know for certain, just tag to ask, or drop by his Discord.

My best guess on why he only recently added it: He doesn't use it a lot, and the orb line is associated with healers, so it wasn't on his radar as a particularly viable skill.

He admits he doesn't do a whole lot of theorycrafting before patches because he wants to have them updated for launch day rather than after. The churn cycle is too short for him to check all possibilities before they become obsolete, so he notes changes to compensate for the most obvious nerfs/buffs and moves on to his other eight million builds and guides.

I think because it can be syngeried by numerous players on one orb.

I've been using it as mag since after the dot nerf. It just does great damage and aoe. Especially Vs big bosses.

When choosing skills just look at how much total damage they do and for what cost. It's just a numbers game.

Also the synergy is great to have.

The cleave damage is tasty and it melts things if all of the dps have them out at the same time.

That is another reason, if healer don't use orb and the healing orb is a bit pointless in dungeon any magic DD can use it for damage and giving resources.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Becuase he's chaning his setups more for live content than dummies.

On the dummy, since it is only one enemy and has a small hitbox orb doesn't do a lot of dps, plus it costs quite a bit and sustain has been pretty bad the last few patches.

However in a raid on bosses with bigger hitboxes, or multiple adds it's 100% a neccessary skill, and now sustain has got a bit better so including it seems logical.
@Sparr0w so I get the notification

with the aoe audit in dragonhold, orb was untouched even though others got their costs skyrocketed and damage deleted. Orb still dealt about 2k dps in an AOE that slowly moves forward, and provides synergy for other players. it has high utility, and magdps were using it in raid since dragonhold, alcast is just behind a bit.

All mag dps in higher end trials groups has orbs on their bar, especially in trials like Sunspire because they do more damage per cast than any other ability and cleave at the same time. Orbs are very very very good at both single target and aoe damage. Just add up the tooltip damage and it's easy to figure out why. Orbs have been meta in trials for mag dps since Scalebreaker.

It's an extremely high DPS per unit of cost. If it hits most of the time (bc it moves) then it's a really strong DoT.

When they pulled back DoT's in dragonhold release they didn't reduce the damage of a few select skills. Orb is one of them. So, it's got the power of a Scalebreaker DoT skill.

I use mystic orb on my templar healer since she already has almost TOO many ways to heal people, might as well add to the dps instead. DPS is important, and if my healing has hit a point where more is too much, its better to add dps.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

I realize that Alcast has a lot of builds to keep track of and update, but the fact that there has been a magicka aoe dot that deals almost three times as much damage as the next best counterpart for well over a year, and he is just now realizing it, is outright embarrassing. Alcast is a great resource if you need a soft starting point, but there are so many better ways to do things when you put YOUR mind to perfecting one build instead of relying on one guy to make dozens of builds.

Because having people’s blue balls touch one another is satisfying, not to mention really easy resource return, good aoe cleave and cheaper than most aoes as well

His website is kinda slapped super fast and mostly ctrl+c/ctrl+v approach, i doubt any end game pve player might not catch up at first patch notes glance on at least on
dlc release. Probably high aoe dot costs were the reason not to include it on a website builds as new players totally gonna suffer sustain issues but now it's perfectly viable for every player level when sustain is a joke.

I think he hadded them in dragon hold with the increase in the cost odf the other aoe dot, this one wasnt targeted

Nope. They were only added in his builds after update 25.

Love mystic orb. Great damage, great in helping with regen, and it targets lots of adds for AOE damage. I use that and talons more than eruption when running most dungeons.
