ESO crashing after being closed

So this is a weird new thing that's only started in the past few days, and has apparently happened to at least one other person I know. I generally use alt+f4 to close ESO now, as logging out manually, for me at least, results in the game freezing for several minutes before it finally closes (and it actually freezes; when I try right-clicking and selecting Close Program on the icon on the taskbar, it always brings up the 'program is not responding' prompt). At least with alt+f4 the closing is generally right away, and I did a bit of searching to see if that would have adverse effects on ESO but didn't find anything indicating it would.

The last few days I've closed ESO, I've gotten crash report prompts after the game has been closed. My friend said the same thing happened to her, and she closes the game manually. I can't see the game crashing after it's closed causing many problems, since at least it's not during actual game play, but it's just strange that it's happening, and can be added to the pile of crash-related stuff going on.

I've had the same issue since Update 25. I never had crashes before, but now I get them pretty consistently when quitting from the character select screen.

I'm not 100%, but it does seem to be related to addons for me. I can't be certain, but I don't think I get crashes when they're turned off.

Look at the bright side, at least it stop running now. Before this patch on mac it was hanging indefinitely when you did quit the game, so I guess it's a progress?

There is one small adverse effect on just alt+f4'ing to close the game. Any changes done to addons (or any saving done by the addons) will be lost as addons only save data during loading screens, the reloadui command, and properly logging/quitting out of the game. So if you're going to continue to use alt+f4 to quit the game, make sure to /reloadui before you do so your addons can save their data.

I keep having this problem, too. About half the time when I try to log out, I get an error asking what I was doing when the crash occurred. This has only started happening since the big download.

i get these too but honestly these seem the least issue since you are closing the game intentionally anyway...

I've gotten the crash-on-logout error numerous times since the update, and all of the occurrences seem to be after I've cycled through my characters doing their daily crafting writs. As soon as I back out of the character selection screen to go to the server selection/login screen, the login screen appears but freezes, then crashes instead of retrieving and displaying the latest announcements.

I'm not using any add-ons; I don't play any Elder Scrolls games with mods or add-ons, other than any additional content that was officially produced and released by Bethesda (for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim), or produced by third parties and released officially through the Creation Club or whatever it's called (for Skyrim Special Edition). I have never downloaded or installed any third-party add-ons for ESO.

If I'm not doing any actual crafting, I can usually cycle through my characters-- such as to position them at the crafting boards so I can quickly accept the jobs later on after the daily reset-- then logout and go back to the server selection/login screen without getting the crash. I'm not saying it's got something to do with crafting or not crafting, but it does kind of seem to be related to how much gameplay you had done on your character before logging out.

Been getting this one as well, I find it awkwardly funny since I'm closing the game. In my case if I Alt+F4 its process would often linger for quite long, so I just go ahead and end the process' task.

Hopefully they would resolve these crashes with today's patch, notwithstanding the triviality or relevance of the crash.

Right now ESO crashes at logout, at character selection screen, travel between keeps and randomly at Cyro.

Got this too.

It’s an eye roller. I mean crashing after I’ve quit the game, what is that all about? On one hand it’s stupid and hilarious and utterly insignificant because I was trying to leave the game anyway. On the other, it’s indicative of some clearly incompetent development as quitting a programme should be a pretty basic process that it’s hard to get wrong.

It makes you think that in months of preparatory work and 5 weeks of public testing, no one at ZOS bothered to actually watch what happened when they quit. And if they did, and they can resolve it in a week after it went live, why they didn’t resolve it before it went live.

I had it only once and it really didn't feel much like a crash. Game closed on exit and crash report popped up.

Oops, I didn't realize they were aware of it haha. I hadn't seen anyone else mention it so I decided to bring it up.

Wow, really? I've been playing since closed beta and this is the first time I've run into it. That's a hella sneaky bug to exist so long without a person running into it once haha. ESO is full of surprises, sometimes bad ones, and sometimes just weird ones.

Since there are multiple threads about the crashing in Cyrodiil or when closing the game we will be closing this thread. As posted in the known issues thread linked below, these issues should now be resolved with the latest update.
