All ground aoe dots reduced cost EXCEPT Eruption?

Why? It does the least damage out of all of them and costs the most. I don’t get it. Yet another knock to magdk...

irstarkey57✭✭✭✭I mean you can still get some solid pve dps out of it. Pvp it’s in a *** spot with having to play the whole whip proc game meanwhile that same game dictating all your bar real estate but yea....the class is just silly right now. Doesn’t play at all like it used to. My opinion of course. It’s not terrible...but next to magplar, mag sorc, warden and basically any stam toon, it is underperforming like you said.0

Fair point to treat skills the same in isolation. Though MagDK as a class for PvE got the more sustain buff(s) than any other mag class by a long shot.
But Elf Bane is meta contender in PvE. So, it's effects has to be considered. With Elf Bane not just the AOE ground DoT but almost every one of MagDK's DoTs (in class and out) received a massive cost reduction per unit of damage. Secondly, Asylum staff seems to be the meta which increases sustain on a MagDK due to their passive...the pain point for MagDK in PvE was sustain. The cost of all of this, which is needed being highest parser, is bad sustain if ground DoT's need to be re-cast often before they run their course.
I have to disagree with treating it the same. For me, it's great that MagDK is different. I'm excited to use mine more with all the bells and whistles as well as fun factor Elf Bane + Asylum provides to self and group. Maybe they took a break from spreadsheet balance; we get something unique though.
In PvP, I've used Warden/Necro/Templar ground DoT skills on some builds sparingly. I am probably unaware but never thought NB/Sorc/DKs' skills were useful in PvP. Do those have PvP slot worthy applications?1 -

✭✭✭✭✭Eruption is still one of the cheapest DoT AoE cost wise per cast. It costs at base ~5,7k for 22 sec duration. It's ~260 magicka per sec. Comparing it to other class ground AoE DoTs makes it way cheaper then some of them. For example before update 25 sorc had to cast lightning flood that costs 5k magicka at base and lasts 10 seconds which makes it 2 times more expensive then Eruption. Also as I've already said mag DK is very powerfull DD atm and new patch made it even stronger.Edited by Juhasow on February 24, 2020 6:28PM0 -

✭✭✭✭✭I dont claim to have all the answers, but I do know a few things (most of this is PVE perspective).
-Mag DKs are back at like 1.5 status. They are meta pve damage dealers.
-DK sustain is not bad all things considered.
-DKs still use this in their rotation, and can sustain it.
-This is I believe the longest duration ground DOT, making it relatively cheap compared to LL and Shards.
-Sorcs main ground DOT, liquid lighting, didnt even merit a slot last patch, and sustain was a big part of it.
-Shards did make a templars bars, but magplar sustain was terrible last patch. They needed some help for sure in that department.
That's about all I got. I wouldnt shed a lot of tears for MagDK, but admittedly, it can be lonely at the top.Edited by Oreyn_Bearclaw on February 24, 2020 9:23PM1 -

✭✭✭Personally? I hope that they continue to increase the cost. I'll be satisfied when it costs 10k or more. It should take at least 3 full heavy attacks to recast every time the boss moves out of the Eruption AoE
Actually tho, I think a radius increase would makes sense for the utility/area lockdown purpose of the skill. Not as big as Caltrops, but big enough that the slow is a real obstacle in PvP and the damage a bit more reliable in PvEPC-NA

✭✭As a mag DK using the skill in PvE and PvP, it's not a big deal considering the duration of the skill and the fact it still snares compared to templar's extended ritual and ritual of retribution.
In fact, I made sure to keep my mouth shut this time when ritual of retribution and extended ritual were getting nerfed just because of that fact

The longer duration of DoTs is part of the reason why MagDK's potential DPS is highest. The downside you mentioned is a way to balance that to some degree; Elf Bane increases the risk/return. The cost is extremely low with Elf Bane and not expensive without it on a per unit of damage basis. Few bosses are that mobile, but there are some. If all bosses behaved like dummies MagDK would strictly be the best in all scenarios; that's not a good result imo.
StamCro on the stam side has almost no downside which is unfortunate imo.
