PVE: What class would you choose to play if there were no such thing as a "meta"?

Langeston

✭✭✭✭✭
Imagine for a minute that all of the classes were on equal footing and there was no clear "meta class" for any particular application. All of them are equally viable in their own unique way & they are all suitable for any role — the only differentiating factor is the class identity & playstyle. (Or as ZOS puts it: "Power Fantasy" & "Play Patterns.")

Which one would you choose, and why? (The poll wouldn't allow for more than 10 choices, so please specify magicka or stamina in your comment.)

Note: I've posted a PVP poll as well, since the answers may be different based on PVP/PVE, and some people only play PVP.

As I have 49 characters right now, with two more in the works, all of the above.

    *SIGH*

[Actually, I have no necromancers. Won't ever.]

As far as I'm concerned there's not any such thing as meta, because it basically doesn't exist for me or have any use in my life.

So, I have alts for each class, but I tend to bounce back and forth between templar, nightblade, and warden most often, depending on what mood I'm in or what events are happening.

I don't know since the meta is very fluid and changes depending on how the math works. So I voted for the class that captured my heart.... Dragonknight!

If warden was a pet class as originally advertised and people didn’t whine to make it into a gimped ice mage, and the bear’s 30% damage reduction was reversed, then maybe I’d choose warden out of that list.

I would prefer just many skill lines and no actual classes
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

This. And the ones I play the most are Stamblade(stealth archer), Stamden, and Magplar

... I was supposed to pick my character based on the meta?

I'm loving my tank dragonknight. I've also had a lot of fun with a warden. Sorc is okay, but I don't think I can play a pure magic-based one; I had a lot more luck with a bow sorcerer. Never tried templar or necro, but I was really bored with a nightblade and couldn't play him longer than a few levels before I tossed the char.

I have a Stam and mag of each class and my magdk can double as a tank just switching attributes around. I'm a "post-meta" player.😉

Considering I follow the storyteller’s meta, I would simply quit the game. There’s no point in playing if I’m not going to make a character and fit how I build them to that concept.

    I don't follow meta
I make character based on theme and backstories

I only just made an Argonian Warden the other day because I had an idea for a character that I liked
I also have a Nord Warden but these are two different characters with two different playstyles

Meta is counterintuitive for an RPG like ESO. They deliberately try to give you choices and make the various classes viable at all roles in order to promote your ability to have your power fantasy. It's not perfect and not every power fantasy can be constructed, but the effort to give you choices is there.

And someone comes to this game in order to... let someone make all those choices for them?

For people who are here to roleplay their character (whatever depth of "roleplay" they are at), experience the story, be immersed in the lore... meta makes no sense. And the devs should do nothing to encourage it nor benchmark against it.

In SWTOR where replaying the story can give you markedly different outcomes, I play all classes to experience the story in different ways and because each class has a different story and different story elements.
Here, with basically zero replayability, I have one of each class but find it pointless to play more than the one I'm most comfortable with. There's really no incentive to branch out.

I don't think there's such thing as a hard Meta. Sure, some classes are stronger at certain points in time, but all classes can perform in all roles well.
If you like a class you should go for it.

I would have said sorc, which is my main, but I'm levelling a necro and fast falling in love with that class, so I foresee the future being tied between the two.
And yes this is what I would have played if there was no meta either. I'm not even sure what the current meta is because I all that out of *** to give about.

I don't pay attention to the meta.
I play what I want; what interests ME, not what "the crowd" says I should play.

My main is a Nord Warden werewolf. I don't think that has ever been the meta.

    I don't know.

    Definitely mag.

Definitely warden for identity. Also visuals. Their animations and effects are beautiful. But they suck for playstyle because there's only a small number (like about 6 out of their 15 total) of actually useful abilities and the rest are so extremely situational that you just never use them. No variety = super repetitive.

Definitely necromancer for playstyle. They're incredible. Each of their abilities have multiple functions making them potentially useful in different ways for different roles or combat scenarios. I love every single non-elite ability and morph except the insta attack. The whole more damage every third cast thing is silly for trying to make the ability play you rather than the other way around, but I just pretend that component isn't there.

Their heals are brilliant. Perfect. Cover all bases and you're not just spamming the same aoe heal constantly.

Their whole corpse thing takes a bit of getting used to and you can't always manage to execute whatever corpse consumer you'd like, but it adds to the complexity and fun factor. I'm into it.

I just wish necros had a perma pet. Make one of the colossus morphs turn it into a perma summon like warden bear and that would be amazeballs. Make holding down it's key for 2 seconds unsummon it so necros can put it away easily so they don't *** off guards etc. when in populated areas.

The goliath looks super cool but as a ranged player I never use it. Instead of the colossus it could also serve as a good perma pet.

I don't love necro for identity and have never played one seriously in any game, even when mechanically I like what they have. Never used necromancy in the TES single player games other than maybe a few times to see the spell in action to satisfy my curiosity and then never again.

My first Character is a MagSorc and I wish I could play her more, but I suck at DPS compared to the people I play with.. and it's not the META.

I also really loved to play her as Sorc Healer, wish I could do it again.🥰😭
