Yeah that’s weird then. Especially since on this account I’m at 2,000 and never logout. I honestly always assumed it was profile visits.

does your internet browser clear history, cache and do you need to sign in when you come to the forum? if thats the case your browser logs out for you.

It keeps all of that , I use the forums on my phone browser. Only time I login is when the site logs me out randomly. The closest thing to signing out for me is closing the tab.

site dont log people out randomly, something in your settings does that, phone browser, you can test it easy, try looking at your number, then log out, and log in, boom your number went up

I joined only October 2019 and have nearly 1000 visits. I'm here every day, usually on my phone, but I have most certainly NOT logged in 1000 times in that short period. ;)

Could it be the number of threads I openend? That's the only thing that comes to mind that could maybe come close.

I have been here for 6 years and I haven't only logged in 208 times, with nearly 3k comments, my count will stay the same as long as I dont press the signout

    19 visits since June 2017 :/

Seems a bit low even for logins. Does it track by IP? Had a router restart last week, so that would make more sense.

    Edit:
@Artemiisia is right, it's just a login counter. Signed out, signed in again now I'm at 20.
Always visiting from the PC so no phone shenanigans.

It’s definitely only this site that logs me out. Everything else stays as normal. But anyways to be here for 6 years and have your count that low doesn’t seem suspicious to you?

nope, since I dont press the sign-out button when I leave the page, I just leave, that means when I open up the page again, im still logged in, so my number dont go up.

and its easy to test with many ways.

you looking at my profile, number will stay the same

I logout with the sign-out button on the page and sign in again, number goes up

I login with my phone, number goes up

I dont login on the phone normally, I just did it today to test it, never used that before

Well, if my phone "logs me in" just by opening that bookmark (I'm not logged out and don't have to enter anything), then this is just stupid. I don't even clear caches on my phone. 🙄

Edit: However, I just closed all apps on my phone, opened them again, no change in counter. So I don't know what you mean.

This might well be, but I have NOT logged in 1000(!) times since October. That would mean logging in several times each day, and I certainly would remember that.

Also, my counter did go up by one number today, but I did not log out or in. I did open my browser on pc, though, which is also logged in (always, never logs out).

Doesn't have anything to do with logging in. It's website visits. Every time i leave the site for a few mins then click on the bookmark to check new posts, my count goes up.

Guys... You know it's probably just both? :D
It counts logins because those are a hard resets and count as a visit. And then there's probably other ways to trigger it based on longer pauses of inactivity followed by sudden activity.

Yeah, it is probably both, I'm sure that actual log-ins count as well. But to say that only log-ins count, like some people seem to believe, is simply false, when I have clearly seen it proven otherwise by going on my profile, refreshing and the number going up in response. And I never ever log out on my private laptop, I always have the tab open, my browser doesn't automatically clear cashe or history either. I might have pressed that "log-in" button maybe 10, 15 times over the course of the last year - not 1800 times.

But maybe there really is something else going on here, that makes this work differently for different people. How else would you explain numbers as low as 20 or so for people who have been here for years? That just doesn't make much sense. I'm guessing that either it works as intended for some of us and not for others, or it doesn't really work realiably for anybody and is pretty much just one hot mess all around. Maybe that's more likely :D

I wonder if it's something to do with a difference in browsers. Since last night when I closed the browser, my visits number went up 5 when I looked just now. I use Pale Moon, a fork of Firefox. I did not log out last night, just closed the browser. And I was not asked to log in this morning, as I was still logged in.

That is how it works for me. I get "logged out" any time I close my browser. My browser deletes my history, cookies, and all that wonderful stuff that tells Vanilla Forums that I was logged in. I also get "logged out" on my mobile if I go more than a couple days without interacting with the forum, so I assume that they have an inactivity timer that they use, as well.

Rather than an inactivity timer it is more likely related to the login cookie expiration and cookie deletion settings in the browser.

Not really. Cookie expiration will occur whether you are active or not just as a browser cookie setting will delete cookies regardless of activity.

Unless, of course, this is something weird on my end only, and it works differently for everybody else, but for me at least this is what happens.

It probably has to do with the browser logging in from a new session, even if you're not prompted to log in.

I mean, I've got four simultaneous forum logins, so that could be a factor.

I only visit the forum from my PC, and I only have to log in if my browser cookies expired. I definitely didn't logged in 1100 times in the last 2 years.

Yeah, I don't hit "sign out", rarely have to explicitly 'log in' again, and don't close my browser (it's always on in the background, and I just sleep my computer), and I've picked up another ~10 visits in the last day or so. But between 'remember me' and my browser holding passwords, it may be doing some background logins I never notice. Or cookie expirations, or... /shrug

Then active on an page something called sessions let the server know who is doing the request, sessions hold information like user id, and can hold others like user name and settings.

However they time out then inactive as server has to keep track of them.
