I dislike the constant changes in direction. I dislike the homogenization of skill functionality. I dislike the constant reinforcement that DPS is king, to the point tanks and healers are now considered undesirable in dungeons and ZOS are still reinforcing the DPS-is-king meta by nerfing sets like Iceheart.

That Iceheart nerf has sent a strong message that this design philosophy isn’t changing anytime soon, ZOS are clueless about the current issues facing the game’s DPS-focused combat design, and things will only get worse before they get better. I’ve got plenty of other games I enjoy playing though, so if that nerf makes into the live game, I’m gone until they start to turn this ship around.

EDIT: To clarify, I don’t even use Iceheart. I’m a healer. It’s the message they send by thinking the set is OP that cements my fear that they aren’t aware of this game’s problems.

TO me its simple, they need to think what will the player do with this, what will they added as in gear sets etc and not say that will look good with out testing it fully and not have high end peeps testing it, but average players testing it, also they employed someone who has no clue, since they joined combat has been worse, i do think changes are need, like pvp and pve being seperate balanced, like not having pve gear in pvp, you may disagree with me but my mag dk has 75% crit and 5k spell damage in pvp, but that still small compared to other builds, my nb has over 8k weapon damage and 3k spell damage, weapon crit of 144% and spell Crit of 112% fully buffed, that is in pvp, also the power creep is getting to much, it needs to be lowered big style, which will force peeps to learn the dungeon, trials etc instead of burning things done, mmo's are supposed to be about the holy trinity and team work, not about run at break neck speed through the content

With all the nerfs and all the server improvements (PC-EU getting worse that a terrible thing, that gets more terrible with every ZOS pass at it (or are they trying to see how much they can screw things over before no-one buys form Zenimax group again))

It has reached the point where I do not even try combat most of the time!

Given I will vary the skills I use significantly over the course of a dungeon, I can’t say that PvE combat has become homogenised. I appreciate the desire to balance the strengths/weaknesses of the different races and classes.

I feel it’s about as good as it was, but that over a year what has really changed is my understanding of combat rather than any underlying changes that were made.

I did enjoy the brief hiatus where my Templar was able to do 100k + damage, but being able to basically melt any PvE opposition, but not having to play any mechanics isn’t as satisfying as beating the bosses and the mechanics. So I am not that bothered about them dialling it back.

Yeah, sorry, new combat team doesn't even play their own game, apparently. Spreadsheet balancing is a terrible idea. Nobody want to be the same as everybody else, only with different particle effects. Holding my breath, bracing for the new Dark Nerfs of Skyrim.

Except for PvP to work all the classes have to have the same fundamental strengths and weaknesses, so that no one class dominates. That doesn’t mean they have to exhibit those strengths and weaknesses in the same way. But that balance is essential.

The alternative is that one class/race is so dominant there is no point playing anything else.

Players are fantastically adaptable and inventive in terms of finding and maximising any microscopic advantage a race, class or set might provide and the live PvP environment is a constant testbed for them. Way beyond what any team of developers could cope with, which is why extreme outliers can only be identified and dealt with once they’ve gone live.

So the developers are right in constantly trying to rein in any extreme advantages and balance all the classes.

    For PvP;
The nostalgia glasses are firmly fitted in this thread, but it is to be expected. Of course being a virtually invicible mag-sorc felt more enjoyable. One shotting Vamps from stealth was great. Wrecking blow knocking back and empowering your next wrecking blow into a split second ultimate. I could go on for days. It all felt great. But I can tell you for certain that it turned more people away from the PvP in this game than it ever retained. Having such a monumental difference between the skil ceiling and the skill floor, with very little in between, was never good for any PvP game.

    For PvE;
I much prefer the spammables being most of you DPS instead of the old cycling through dots. In trials this leaves much more room for utility skills that are effective in different situations. It’s much more fun to be able to contribute more to the group than just standing there and cycling through the same skillls over and over in all situations.

Biggest culprits for me personally are ult cast times and overly restrictive resource management. Combat gives you the illusion it's meant to be fluid and reactive, but at the same time there are these massively disruptive elements.

    Purely from a PvE perspective:

I miss when my sorc used lightning. (Lightning Splash and it's morphs now feel too weak and cost too much to feel worth slotting in most situations.)

I miss when my NB felt playable. (My original main. Racial changes and then class changes left it feeling dead to the point I quit the character. Sure, I could adapt, but the fun was gone.)

Necro feels too clunky, so definitely hasn't filled the holes.

Hated the DoT meta. (But the nerfs that followed were overkill - strong DoTs were not the issue, just having so many strong ones that it started making sense to drop a spamable... This whole mess, more than anything else, showed how little real direction there is and made me lose faith that anything will improve.)

As for PvP, I just won't go there.

When they announced that they'll rebalance the game within series of few patches starting in 2019 I was sceptical. Then they've released whathstone with racial rebalance. Things were looking kinda decent....for one-two weeks. After that they started to alter changes they've made in 1st iteraration of PTS with well known cluelesness. Balance in that update ended up to be average but acceptable. But there was still bigger picture ahead , rebalance of the game so I could still belive that 1st update was just part of bigger picture. But within rest of the year it became clear there is no bigger picture and that combat team under Brain Wheeler's leadership is worse then during Wrobel era. Scalebreaker and Dragonhold patches reflect this the best way where one patch ovebuffed DoTs to the sky despite the fact community was announcing that throughout whole PTS cycle and then in Dragonhold they not only reverted all the changes but made DoTs weaker then before Scalebreaker. And all of it while dumbing gameplay down and sucking away fun and uniqueness of playing each class. Bigger picture my ***.

PvE got boring and PvP more broken then before. It looks like there is no hope for combat team in this game. Despite the fact they've created whole class rep program , promissed to look at players feedback more and even hired one of the streamers they still are as clueless about balancing the game as they were before 2019.

As a person that doesn't really play mmo's, all I can say is these people seem to have no clue of what they are doing....Seems the longer you play the weaker you get
Now I cannot speak on pvp, but as a solo pve person, with almost 800cp, and each update you feel weaker and weaker something is dramatically wrong
As far as a "plan" goes, I'm not buying that for a second
I worked very hard for those CP points purposely, so i could balance stamina out, NOW right back to where I started constantly micromanaging, sadly it's becoming an irritation as opposed to "having fun"

Less enjoyable with all the nerfs do to so called balance and champion point creep.

Then there is the issues with your abilities in general being wonky and not working correctly due to bad coding, latency or whatever. Combat should be smooth and fluid, it's not and has not been in a long time.
I love eso for the atmosphere, stories, graphics. If it was for combat I would of left long ago folks.

ESO's combat system isn't its strength and never was. Wild differences in damage output due to animation cancelling, targetting problems, wild difficulty swings in solo PvE. The game was fun nonetheless. But the last year of changes sucked the joy out of combat in my opinion. We had to respecc and re-equip all characters at least twice, and in the end, they feel weaker and less fun.
A MMO can survive a phase of lackluster combat. Buuuuuut... The seemingly random direction of changes (e. g. buff a skill by 100%, then nerf the same skill to 30%) at least destroyed my confidence in the combat team. They seem to have neither a clear vision nor a basic understanding of how to approach something like this. That makes it difficult to hope for a turn for the better.

    Definitely less enjoyable.

The race changes were awful and it’s been a steady downward descent since then. With abilities nerfed and without character, combat enjoyment feels like it’s at its lowest point since the game began.

ESO, in general, is a really strong mmo, it’s main and gigantic flaws are the combat system and buggy client.

I will never forget the "Rally" Nerf.

I play no dungeons and no pvp, why you have touched my 2 handed heal skill?

If you need to nerf it for cyrodiil, nerf it only there.

I've never understood, why pve and pvp are not separated. Everytime there are skill or set nerfs because of that.

Welcome to MMOs. Every MMO I have played has always had issues around balancing the game between PVP and PVE. One game decided that each skill would function differently in PVP than in PVE. You know what happened; server took a big hit and it had an impact on players experience. Lag, disconnection, etc...it became so bad most of the game population quit.

The other end of the spectrum I have seen game developers do is streamline, simplify, reduce, decrease, etc... the complexity of the game system to allow for more balance between dd, pvp, etc... it made those games that got those adjustments boring.

So companies go as far as to rebalance their base stats along with making the game easier to code both results in the game becoming boring.

I have left 3 mmos now that did this. If ESO removes buffing/debuffing from the game, reduces complexity in builds, etc... I will quit playing ESO and probably all MMOs given that this game still has complexity to it.

You all complain now but imagine if the game put caps on magika, your critical chance, your weapon or spell damage, capping buff/debuff, reducing what you do for buff/debuff by over 90%, etc... I have seen this type of update and it has ruined games.

Even though I have been playing ESO on and off since the game launched on PS4, I consider myself a new player as I'm still learning something new every time I play.

Overall from last year I honestly don't see all that much of a difference. In fact what I have seen is an up swing in DPS across the board for classes. If I remember correctly at one point a good DD would put out around 35K DPS, than it jumped to 45K, and now a good DD can do around 80K+ DPS. So for anyone complaining I can't see a reason why you are all complaining when damage seems to be going up and not down. This up swing makes content EASIER.

If anything, I believe that the devs need to tweak our damage and lower it a bit across the board. Now if the damage is being adjusted for the newer dungeons, than instead of raising our damage simply reduce the enemies health in the dungeon and continue to add more mechanics to ensure that the newer dungeons have something new and exciting to offer.

As someone that has experienced all sorts of updates and changes in a MMO; I'll simply wait and see what happens.

It's about the same for me, but I've taken periodic breaks so I'm not really burnt out right now. But I'm not sure if it's combat that is boring, or just the repetitiveness of how you use your combat. It's the same rotation for basically every monster...not using different skills based on some sort of elemental weakness that monster might have.
