Imagining a Spear Skill line.

I was just imagining a skill line based on spears(and shields).
That can then be used to form phalanxes. Each phalanx has a captain.

- Form a phalanx via player interface. Or skill. Or Pressing Synergy to enter existing phalanx. (If you have right weapon equipped and captain sets the setting of who can enter)
- Forming a phalanx reduces your speed to walking only. And you must remain in line to retain bonus. (Line is displayed on ground??. Captain decides its nature)
- Phalanx gives reduced incoming damage from front. (Phalanxes have line, curved and square/turtle modes)
- Spears have increased range on melee attacks. (Like GreatSwords increase damage)

Who knows, maybe even greatswords can also join in.

Imagine going in or defending a breach with that. GLORIOUS.

Fix the lag first tough.
Or create ESO-II with a new shiny engine, if you can't fix it. ALREADY.

The only reason I have a Templar is so that I can give her a pointy staff and pretend that it's a spear. So... yeah, I'd like a real spear weapon, please. :)

I like the idea of spears being a melee support weapon, but I think forcing players to move in formation isn't going to be fun or practical in most cases. I also think that having the "phalanx" buff effect only affecting other spear-users could either make spears required in certain content or so impractical that they'd never be used.

Any spear functionality should be through the weapons and skill lines themselves, anyway. Not through a separate interface. Using a separate interface needlessly raises the cost of entry into using the skill effectively and risks cluttering up the game's UI in general.

i think it would be pretty similar to the templar line...a combination of melee and medium range with a charge, a throw, some sort of single strike and an aoe swing etc... it would probably be difficult to differentiate it enough from the templar line

thats why i still think 1h+spell would be the best option

    - it fills a niche
    - it doesnt require new weapon models
    - its something unique
    - animations and models are already partially in the game

fun part is making a spear for the +60 motifs that exist in the game right now

then making sure how players who bought the full motif book and/or earned the "Complete Motif Book" achievement get those spear motifs too

Easy way: unlock the "spear" style with the staff page. They're next to each other alphabetically anyway, and the sword/mace/axe style pages unlock one- and two-handed versions. Or replace the "dagger" page, since the daggers for many motifs just look like the sword model, so throw the dagger unlock in the sword page.

This is actually one of the things I'd love to see about spears - how it would look in all of the different styles. I keep picturing the various Khajiit styles as elegant gilded glaives, the Pyandonean style 100% needs to be a trident, you've got naginatas for the Japanese-esque styles of Tsaesci and Akaviri, basic halberds for things like the Breton style... it would be loads of fun to see.

We haven't had spears in an Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind, and they weren't used all that much there. Another example of the "you won't miss it until it's gone..." Now that Zelda: BotW made spears one of the three weapon types, I'd love to see them start coming back to TES.

and thats why i dont see any weapon skill line heapning that does require new models....

    It's not about forcing people.

It's just a new mechanic 'Phalanx', that could require a spear equipped, and a shield in your inventory.
And gives you some damage mitigation at cost of being snared at walking speed.

It can even have nothing to do with skills in the general spear skill-line.

Keep imagining, cos they haven't added anything like that since the game launched, and even re-use the same animations for different skills (ambush/flying blade).

If we get spears before a new magicka weapon Im pretty sure most of the community would be ticked off.

We need a new magicka weapon before even considering spears, tbh.

Mages have only been able to use staves for 6 years now....
