Sorc or Templar?

My friend wants to get back into the game, but he never got super high level. He's deciding between Sorc and Templar (he said he wants to play a Magicka build). He doesn't plan on playing much PvP, so he'll mainly be doing PvE. What's do you suggest? Also, what's the most "meta" right now? He's wants to be as close to meta as possible for maximum output (his words) I hardly play the game anymore so I'm not really up to date and running on older knowledge
New to forums and stuff so I 99.9 percent probably won't see your response and such, so use the at symbol at me I guess? IDK :/. This BBCode stuff is really cool!! :D.

My little rant I guess?:
One day Nightblades will get the buffs we desperately need and deserve, but so far, those buffs are not today.. The Elder Scrolls Online: Nightblade Nerfs Unlimited.
Don't nerf you, don't nerf me, nerf the sorc behind the tree!.

Ich kann Deutsch Sprechen bei der mittleren/zwischen Kenntnissen Ebene. Hallo! :D.

CP level 1000+! Playing since 2015.

    My wishlist I suppose:
    • PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEAAASSSEEE EITHER BUFF SIPHONING STRIKES OR REVERT IT BACK TO PRE MORROWIND!!.
    • Bring back purge cloak. But I guess the new heal cloak is more beneficial. Hmmm....
    • MAKE IMPERIAL CITY GREAT AGAIN, BRING BACK THOSE INCREDIBLE DAYS. My best experiences in ESO where in there!
    • Return Stam builds to the power we held in One Tamriel. Long Live Stamina builds!
    • Put Magplar and MagDK into their place. Magpsorc is a hopeless case.
    • Is there any chance that we could get an Ebonheart Pact nerf? #CullingTheHerds .

      Two of each😉.

But on a serious note, both are good for new players. If he's completely new to mmo's, a mag pet sorc could be best for helping understand mechanics and will be a little more forgiving as he's learning how combat works in ESO.

magsorc has crystal blast (AOE) + critical surge (heals doing crit damage), magplar has puncturing sweep (morph of puncturing strikes) that hits multiple enemies and heals.

I play both, both are able to solo worldbosses. Sorcerer is sometimes in slight advantage, as crystal blast can hit more enemies at once, e.g. when you fight the queen of the reef in Summerset with a lot of small mudcrabs that can be really annoying. But overall, both work fine.

Meta: I don't like this term, as people use it often ignoring that the WHOLE setup must be balanced.
They recommend: use set x and y and monsterset z, but don't tell you how to set up your champion points, which mundus stone matches the sets, which skills.

Imho magicka sets to take in account are still the old but gold one mothers sorrow (crit), plus the newer "new moon accolyte" (damage). Then the thief as mundus (more crit chance), later at full optimized cp810 build the shadow (crit damage) or lover (penetration).
Even this is not "meta", as it depends on playstyle. I use this combination on my magplar because I use puncturing sweep very often.
On my sorcerers I prefer heavy staff attacks, so I use Mothers Sorrow + Torugs Pact (increases damage of weapon glyphs).

Other people will recommend set like Burning Spellweave.

I recommend to have a look at the eso wiki.
It has a page that lists all sets. You will see then, which one offers what you like most, so you can create your own optimized combination.

Both are good choices for magicka builds.

Sorceror is a little more useful for long range artillery and in pet configuration can be useful for people that yet have to learn the combat mechanics (or suffer from lots of lag), Templars have an advantage at the healer option yet can also put out a good deal of damage to get through most encounters... both do very well in PvE.

I'd say, it depends on the character idea. What flavor someone wants to play as... if someone likes to be on the "holy" side with their setup, throwing light magic around and feeling all priestly, then go templar, if they prefer dark magics and lightning, then sorceror would be the right choice.

...because ZOS said "nope" to class change tokens? :p;)

But hey, its always a possibility to make two characters! Play the altmer templar goody-two-slippers when feeling "paragon", and go for the dunmer goth warlock sorceror when feeling "renegade"... ;)

MS and nma are meta. Not together, but both sets are definitely meta. Also, the existence of people using crystal blasts makes me sad. frags are love frags are life.

I found templars easier to play as personally especially since they have attacks that also heal you it made it easier to solo stuff even early on. They're also great as healers if they want to go for that role.

Mothers Sorrow is pretty useless and far from meta if you do not support it with some additional optimizations.

As long as your crit chance is below 50%, it is not the best choice. To benefit from it, you need extra steps, like slotting magelight and light armor with its passive skills, and the thief mundus to push your crit to 70%. Once you reached this goal, you can replace the thief with the shadow (more crit damage instead of chance). Now you really will feel the power of this set.

Because of such dependencies I dislike the term "meta", as it leads people to think they just need to use this set and suddenly are the DPS kings.

Mmm actually, ms is stronger the less crit you have. Lets assume for the calculation that crit is double damage (with all modifiers) 50% bonus crit from 0 to 50 gives you 50% more dmg while from 50 to 100 will give you 33% more damage. Of course i used pretty numbers to make it more pretty calculation, but it is more or less like that.
What you were thinking about, is the shadow vs thief mundus stones.
Also, meta sets doesn't mean make u good dd xd, everybody knows that.

Edit: also mag dds usually have inner on front bar, or using potions for crit, and everybody runs light armor as mag dds, if they actually want to deal damage.
