It's been 6 years. Has there really been no work into this in 6 years?

Spellcrafting starts at 52:45 if that helps. Second video should be linked to correct time stamp.

Also, any kind of real/meaningful player-controlled "customization" in MMOs (build your own quests/skills/whatever) has quickly devolved into massive exploits and then been nerfed into uselessness. If you were expecting anything more than "change the color on my <skill>", you'd just end up disappointed.

I believe the guy in charge of it left Zenimax and they shelved it.
They looked into it again, as I understand main problem was making it an interesting mechanic while still being balanced.
Two obvious examples. An very expensive spell costing 30K magic would easy do enough damage to oneshot almost anything in PvP. However an long lasting DoT with multiple effects would be perfect in trials, long time debuffs even better.
This is why the shelved it again.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Just accept that spellcrafting isn't happening. You'll be much happier for coming to that realisation!

Just like I've accepted that we're not going to have a fully effective trading system open to all and common to all platforms.

I mean, they officially announced and showcased fully finished animations, modeled rooms, and a placeholder UI at Quakecon in 2014 in that video which was supposedly about the future of ESO. I find it hard that the work on this whole system halted and was scrapped entirely because 1 man left the company. Was no one else working on the spellcrafting project? Maybe management wasn't giving Nick the staff or resources to do what he needed to do so he left for Riot Games.

There was probably internal testing that concluded it led to too many balance issues.

That or they are saving it for next year - 2020 is the year of balancing and performance updates.
I would not get your hopes up on spellcrafting though

New management teams in place = new priorities. It may have been on the radar 6 years ago, but it appears they have other issues in their sights now.

They mentioned it in a later video/discussion that it's been shelved and effectively canceled because of balancing issues. They have enough trouble balancing classes. Spellcrafting would be catastrophic.

I can see in a few years maybe when/if the game population is really starting to suffer and they decide to pull that out of a hat to try to give the game one last gasp of life. But certainly no time soon.

The kind of spellcrafting that is feasible to implement will upset people on both sides of the debate.

It won't go far enough for more casual players who really want it (no there won't be levitate or water walking) but it will go far enough to create problems for competitve players (yes, one of the math guys will crunch all the numbers and objectively determine a few of the most effective competitve skills which we all will have to use).

It's a lose/lose situation. No surprise ZOS is not eager to put spellcrafting into the game.

They put that one to bed a while ago. The reality is, spell crafting would be an absolute nightmare to balance.

Every time I hear spellcrafting, I just picture flying around Balmora in Morrowind, one-shotting guards with lighting fireballs. Haha

OP puts an almost 2 hour video and says it has been almost 6 years and no work on something mentioned in that video. I looked at it and thought WTF.

Yes, I see OP later gave us a timestamp and noted what they are worried about several posts later and the items is almost an hour into the video. OP, Edit the OP to add the time stamp., maybe even mention what you are even talking about so people do not have to go dig for it. Would make more sense.

As for spellcrafting that OP finally mentioned. Zos has spoken to this recently. They literally said it isn't gonna happen anytime soon as they clearly indicated they have not been working on it. They have other priorities, plain and simple.

If they are just now getting to the point of standardizing the games combat mechanics, it's very unlikely that they will let us mess with them anytime soon. Spellcrafting is just something that we have to let go until 2021.

You mean HE was the ONLY guy that could do it?
Lucky for us they don't up the sub $$ to pay for devs....
We might get stuff fixed around here if they did, and then where would we be?

Not quite. It's been looked at, at least, twice. Maybe three times, in the last six years. From what little I know, it was shelved each time it came up. Keep the dream alive, but it's not soon.

They never mentioned anything about balance, just that they are focusing on performance for now and that spellcrafting isn't on the future roadmap.

And in its 6 year lifetime, ESO has not once been "balanced" to the players' satisfaction.
Why is ESO the only MMO where adding new skills is such an outlandish idea?

I'm almost certain, "balance," came up at least once as a reason it got shelved. That said, official statements on spellcrafting have been pretty thin, so it's hard to sort facts from the rumors.
