Error 318. How?

"You have been dropped from the server because you hit the message rate limit. Please avoid excessive messaging (i.e. spamming)."

How does this keep happening as I am not sending or writing any messages at all? The only thing I am trying to do during this error message is either attacking an enemy or trying to move of picking up something. Does this happen to anyone else?

This is an error we get when the server can't come up with anything valid. I've gotten it before and it's pure BS.

Might be a mailer add on or something causing background havoc.

I would bet money on 1 of 2 things:

1. An addon that is 'spamming' behind the scenes; or
2. A background program

When I fist started playing ESO (around the Homestead patch), I had unintentionally (as in, I would not normally have bothered with it, so it was an oversight) installed an ASUS-branded 'enhanced-for-gaming' audio program that was included in my motherboard utilities.

I kept getting flagged as speed hacking. Toons kept getting locked out of the game. Fortunately, CS worked with me and we figured out the cause of the issue.

If I had to guess, its Option 2, and it will be a program you wouldn't normally consider.

Message mean any form of communication to the ESO server. So if you have a buggy add-on that keep sending request to server, or you keyboard/mouse marco send like 20 key press per second, or you try to change all your gear with add-on in quick succession. They all count as message.

Assuming you are on PC here.

Some add ons use the chat system to send and receive data. This doesn’t show up in your chat window, so you won’t know about it, but the messages are still going through. That might be why you’re hitting the message rate limit.

Ideally ZOS CS should be able to provide a list of those add ons that are particular problems and hopefully they will have contacted the add on developer to get them to restrict their use of the chat channel.

Best thing you can do is update all you add ons and review which ones you really need and which ones are worth getting rid of.

I forgot to mention I am playing on the PlayStation 4 console. And this is on the North American server.

I have lost count of the 318 crashes I have had tonight while trying to run with a group in IC and coupled with the "You are already queued for this campaign" bug while trying to use ladders.

Frustrating does not even begin to cover it!

Console here. It's lag. Happens a lot. The server can't keep up with what the client is sending. Surmising that the server receives nothing and then gets a ton of messages from the client, causing it to throw this error. It could be your internet connection, the connection between you and the server or the server itself. Seeing how it happens quite a lot to both me and my friends, I'm betting server.
