Templar as DPS in Pledges

I’ve recently created a MagPlar to be an additional DPS char (PvE). I gather that Templar’s typically play the Healer role in groups and assume it is generally expected of the class. My question is whether some people primarily designate and play their Temps as DPS, specifically in groups for Undaunted Pledges? Is this common and acceptable to teams?

I might wish to set the char up for healing at some point but plan for him to be a DD for the time being. Just wondering if this is done, and what people’s opinions are on the subject. Any major drawbacks to being a DPS Temp in PvE groups?

    Templars can give great dps.

Both mag and stam Templars can be very effective.

    Like pretty much all classes

all classes can heal or dps. magplars are great for both and can easily swap on the fly.

Although everyone can agree a magplar is easy mode.

Yes it's done. It's quite common. I play mine in all three roles. Your own skill will be more of a determining factor than the class in that content.

Thank you for your responses. I agree that Templars do seem to be a pretty versatile class! And with all roles, skill and experience are your best weapons.

I guess my primary question though is whether people PUG much with DPS only Temps and whether they have any issues getting/staying grouped (it being assumed that another player is performing the healer role). I could simply queue up, but was looking for any experiences from people doing Vet Pledges and Random Dungeons as DD Temps.

Templar DPS is in a pretty good place right now - both Stamina and Magicka are strong. Sustain is a bit of an issue due to the costs of some of their abilities, but ZoS has already noted that sustain is something that they are going to be addressing with the release of the new chapter. Not only that, but Templar isn't the only one suffering from poor sustain right now.

TL;DR You're good. Go for it.

DPS is the only way I've played my magplar. It's actually my preferred character for pugging vet dungeons. You'll have strong AOE damage, self-heals and an easy rotation. Even if there's a magplar healer in the group more shards is never a bad thing.

As long as you're decent at doing damage, no one will care. If you stand in red and do nothing but heavy attacks, yeah, you're likely to get some grief.

In dungeons I never look or really care what class others are playing. I've never seen anybody else raise concerns about it. In 4-person dungeons if there is somebody giving you grief about the class you're playing the problem is theirs, not yours. Class/role optimization is more relevant for trial progression groups who are trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of the group and who are tying to make sure that all of the group buffs that are specific to the different classes are present.

For DPS pugging dungeons just make sure you do the minimum expectations for your role - put out a reasonable amount of damage, avoid incoming damage/mechanics, rez others when needed, don't steal aggro from the tank, stay in front of your healer, and move through the dungeon at a pace that the rest of the group is agreeable to.

    Agreed.

The difference between classes only emerges in the top 5%. Otherwise, the trait that distinguishes players from one another is skill - not the class. Plus, the DPS classes are so close together in efficacy at this point that even damage potential between certain classes falls within the margin of error. I'd say there may still be one or two standouts, but on the whole the classes are more balanced now than they have ever been.

Same. The only question that should matter is: "Are you fulfilling your role to the best of your ability?"

    This is ESO.
I don't care if you roll up in a hybrid 20/20/20 stat build with S&B and an ice staff. If you pull your weight you are welcome.
The only time anyone should care how you spec or play is if you are a] really terrible(and they should help you) or b] in competition points oriented trial group.

If you can make whatever you want to do work no one should ever give you crap for it.

Your comment highlights the templar strengths. If you could create only one character in the game this might be the way to go. Above average dps, one of the top healing classes, could even make a decent tank if you wanted. Versatility, versatility, versatility. Use jabs as a spammable when in those 3 dps groups. No need to worry about heals. Great aoe damage with reflective light, shards, barrage. Best execute (I’m a little biased) with radiant destruction. Purifying light even crits now!!! Lol. What’s not to love? And with promises of better sustain, you really can’t go wrong.

This, and that part is important. Love templars for this, you can queue as an real healer then switch to DD with off heal if group don't need much healing, however on last boss you go back to heal as they has problems in HM.
You get an weak group with an fake tank, so you have to go heal to keep the guy alive who is annoying as he does tank level dps.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

My front bar is setup for single bar vMA, my back bar is the best heals for 4 man groups. I wear jovulds and switch between, mothers sorrow, destruction mastery, and sanctuary. I can heal potatoes and then throw down support dps when needed. Vet dungeons I throw on a few more heals to front bar while keeping shards and jabs. Only way people die is if they make big mistakes.

So, a follow up. I tried a Group Random Normal and had no issues so figured I’d try a Vet Pledge. Did two of them and everything was fine. Probably need to work on my Bars somewhat (tweaking my solo build to incorporate some potential group support) but was generally pleased with the outcome. Again, thanks all!
