Bars and Sets

New to this stuff I've been reading a site by Alcasthq on magicka dps sets. On there, under his description of the Mother's Sorrow set, he says "Most builds frontbar this set, you will loose the bonus once you swap to the backbar" and this has really confused me. How exactly are set bonuses linked to bars? Indeed, how does one Frontbar a set? I really don't know what it means.

If you for example use three jewelry and a two handed weapon for a set, that is 5 set pieces and thus make up for the 5 piece bonus. But when you swap to your back bar you lose that bonus, if you not have another weapon of the same type on that bar that is.

It's extremely common to front bar one set like that, and use an ability modifying weapon on the back bar, like a Maelstrom Inferno staff.

    Thanks.
So if I have 5 pieces of a set but those 5 pieces do not include a weapon this concept of loosing the bonus does not apply?

    Yes, that is correct :)

Its worth noting that when building a character this way, i.e only 1 baring a set, that you have to think about which sets 5 piece proc, carries over to the other bar.

So for instance, Mothers Sorrow wont carry over at all. If possible you want to avoid that. Then take the set, just for example, Infallible Aether, the 5th piece proc DOES carry over, so what I mean by that is you proc the bonus on 1 bar, but the bonus is still in effect once you swap bars. So you have to think about which set you want on the body (always active on both bars) and which set you want to use Jewellery/weapons, which may only be active on 1 bar, unless you double bar the weapon.

That is basically what you are looking for if possible. But it depends on the build.

Also, another aspect of this equation is the enchants on one bar are selected to carry over to the other bar, usually via aoe procs... so you are laying down your aoes, with an enchant like weapon/spell damage increase or Crusher (resistance debuff). The reason being that once your aoes are layed down, your enchant can proc even on the other bar, and it carries over from one bar to the next as well. Hope that makes sense.

    Happy gaming.

What's the easiest way to tell if a set procs both front and back bars, without finding out the hard way? (Hard way = Grinding, equipping, then disappointment)
~There’s a positive in every negative. Sometimes the positive is harder to find than other times, but there is ALWAYS one there~

Sets dont proc both bars if one barred, but all sets that proc and give you timed buff, "carry" to back bar. For example, burning spell weave, mechanical acuity, elemental succession, all give you x buff for y seconds, buffs like that persists even when you bar swap.

That's what I thought, but was getting confused reading some of the posts about builds. Thank you for clarification!! I appreciate it immensely @zvavi!!!

Understand all this could be changing with the next update. Pretty sure this falls into the area Zos said they would be covering this time around.
