Absolutely I hate "name squatting" If you're not planning on playing a game for years or as you put it. Being put into cold storage. I think the name should be freed up. You're not playing the game currently. Why should you be allowed to hold on to those names? What? just because.

I'm thinking accounts that end up in Cold Storage are unlikely to ever be logged back in and the owners have forgotten about ESO.

I recently went back to WoW after NINE years of not logging in. Losing character names would have turned me away probably.

No. Wouldn't be very fair on the people who lose their computers to fire, flood, hurricane... You get the idea.

That can happen to any of us.

We wouldn't have this issue at all if they would allow multiple people to have the same name. I think it's a better idea to work a system out like that than take away people's character names.

You all are missing the point... maybe if they actually dealt with the bots, then they wouldn't have to put 10m bot accounts into cold storage. Not to mention, OP, you would be able to get the name "nshckekkns" that you may be interested in. Everyone would be happy and the servers might be playable. Maybe if all the bots started queueing into the group finder, they may do something about them?

Who are you to decide if someone is name squatting or not?

Why does their inactivity have to be malicious? Like theyre intentionally trying to inconvenience you. You have no clue why they aren't in the game and that lack of activity should not penalize them by removing things from their account because SocialAssassin didn't get to the character name fast enough.

Exactly. They want a name, but, they don't want to put extra letters in in it and look like a knockoff. They want the real deal but can't handle the fact someone else has it. I made a new character today and the name I wanted was taken, so I just came up with a different one. Problem solved. I'm just mad that we can't use numbers.

I have a character made specifically as a mule who has been level 3 for years and hasn't been logged into in months and he's still there. Plus a few low level characters on the NA server who are always there whenever I log in (which is no more than once every few months). I've never heard of anyone else having low level characters disappear either and I'm not aware of any policy which says they'd do this.

Even if a character has an inappropriate name ZOS would 'only' force them to be renamed, not delete the entire character.

Assuming your friend is absolutely certain he didn't delete the characters himself (maybe by accident when trying to delete a different one?) the only explanation I can think of is that someone got into his account - either by stealing his username and password or by gaining access to the computer while he was logged in.

If he wants to find out what happened it might be worth contacting support with the names of the characters and the date when he first noticed they were gone, to see if they can find out any more info (like when they were deleted and where he was logged in at the time). If it happened recently they might even be able to restore them, but I'm not sure if that's something they're able to do in this game.

But I'd also recommend he change his password as a precaution.

I left for almost two years and returned to my account exactly as I left it. I was very grateful and IF things were changed on me I may have just shut it down. However, with that said if an account was left dormant for 5yrs AND shows a very short playtime has accumulated... then I would say go for it.

How many bot accounts do you think there are? It only takes a few accounts to make it seem like Tamriel is infested.

Yes, but after acc was inactive for 1-2 years at minimum. Timer should not be character based.
As your @acc stays the same, I don't see the big problem. Actual/active players should be more important than 2y+ inactive ones. Even if its only about char names.

They are not unlikely to return, people can have many reasons to take a break from the game, to me this thread seem like you are after a specific name someone possess, take your own advice and use alternative writing for it, I mean you could not care that much about the name, when you expect everyone that should take a temporary break from the game to potentially loose all their characters names that they maybe had since 2014 and not care about it?

If this was a Free to Play, I would say yes. If you waited a couple years to come back and they removed your character, I can see them getting the character back but you would need to rename it.

Being as this a Buy the Game to play it - I would not be in favor. I bought it, I own it, I should be able to continue play with my characters no matter how much time passes between log-ins.

You know, it was only yesterday i actually discovered Character names has a 'somewhat' bit of a use when someone in chat addressed me by my characters name and not my Console accounts Username. I asked "How the hell did you know my character name when we're no where near each other?" and they said they have their settings to show charactaer names in chat, not account names.

I literally always thought Character names having to be unique across the entire game was absurd when i first joined at the release on ps4. So if someone else had the same character name you couldn't, i never understood why, now i do, and i still think it's an absurd direction they went.

I changed my chat to show characater names temporarily, it shows a blank white head silhouette beside all names in chat and i promptly changed it back to account names.

And come to think of it i think i've witnessed a account/character name in chat confusion a few times in the past where someone asks "who is X" when X has been talking in chat for a while and they threw out some other name no one had seen in chat but X had already left so they wouldn't be able to have confirmed it etc.
