How are damage % reductions calculated?

Just curious if anyone knows the formula for damage reductions.

Resists, Minor/Major Protections, 5pc bonuses, etc.

pretty sure 8% dmg mitigation = to about 800-1k less dmg of the ability hitting you. Dont know about the others.

Resists = 1% - 660 armor. You can mitigate a total of 50% damage which is about 33000 resists.
Penetration(pvp) = reduces your opponents resistance by the amount of penetration you have.
Resistance stacks additively. I think PVE all mobs have resistance of 18200, but I'm not entirely sure.

Minor/major protection is a direct percentage mitigation of incoming damage i.e. if you are hit for 1000 minor protection would mitigate 8% making the damage you receive 920. there are other from of percentage base mitigation i.e potentates, swift etc...

Percentage based damage reduction stacks multiplicity, I'm not sure how you would work this out because it depends which is applied first. Essentially if you had 1000 damage it would reduce by 8% and then 30% of the new total so the damage received would be like 644.

In terms of which is best to stack... a combination of both i reckon. As most players have a healthy amount of penetration and nightblades, wardens and necros have skills that reduce your resistance by a percentage i.e major vulnerability.

In PVE there is no point stacking past 33000 as far as I know mobs don't have forms of defence reduction.
PvP you can go higher as I said your resistance will most likely be reduced by some means.

    I hope this helps

I assume others have explained it well. I am just linking what is a comprehensive guide to damage mitigation and probably contains more information than most will deal with.

    Is all damage calculated together?

What I'm trying to get at is how I am still taking 5K damage while having 50% damage reduction from resists, 75% damage reduction from Mist Form and 15% damage reduction from Cyrodiil's Light 5pc.

For starters you don’t get those actual values for mist form and CL, it depends on your total sources of mitigation in your build.

As far as resistances you can easily be brought down if someone has a good amount of pen in their build. So let’s say someone has about 8-10k pen in their build + major fracture + a 2h maul. That capped resistances isn’t so capped anymore.
