Class that best meets my description

kehatchb16_ESO
I have around 300 CP and two classes at level 50. I want to roll a new class to focus on completing as much content as possible. I do group on occasion, but generally my plays style is to work through each expansion clearing all of the content on a map. A majority I do solo with the occasional DF to mix things up. I rarely (if ever) pvp.
  • Obviously the first criteria is the class must be effective at soloing content. That includes efficiency in killing trash as well as the ability to solo difficult world content.
  • Beyond that I love mobile classes (both movement and combat).
  • Variety is important to keep it interesting, but I am not looking for artificial complexity or an extremely complicated class
  • Nor am I looking for that extremely simple one bar / one button class
  • I love classes that feel unique or have a unique feature
  • I don't love a heavy prep class (apply 3 buffs before combat) though that isn't a hill I will die on
  • My first class was a Stamina Nightblade. Like many here, it was my go to style in single player Elder Scrolls. I used it to get to CP 160, but then dropped it as it didn't really fit my solo play style.
  • My second class was a Mag Sorcerer which got me to my current CP level. It was fine, but never really clicked for me in the enjoyment department.
  • I have played a Stamina Sorcerer which was a fair bit of fun. Seemed a bit similar to my other classes and didn't seem to fit my solo nature. Still willing to give it another shot.
  • Similarly I also played a Mag Nightblade and enjoyed it. I shelved it because it was so similar to my Sorcerer and I wanted something a bit different. I also heard it has seen some heavy nerfs.
  • I have tried a Mag Templar numerous times. I have never been able to get one out of the teens. The game play just seems really boring to me. Maybe it gets better later?
  • I am currently playing a Stamina Warden and its fine so far (early teens). But nothing has reached out and grabbed me yet to really suck me in. Which is why I am here. I haven't written the class off yet, but I am curious if there is something better.
  • I have not played a Necro beyond level 5, but I am curious if a Stamina Necro might be a better fit
  • I had a Stamina Dragonkinght into the 30s once. Seemed kinda dull, but maybe it was how I played it? Dunno, never really been attracted to the class but I might be missing something.

I appreciate any feedback you have. I know it is a personal choice, but I have often found success finding an MMO or RPG class by engaging the community and finding people with similar play styles.

Both classes you played should work well since they both have healing while you do damage. I would suggest the magicka version of either or a bow build.

Personal favorite for solo is probably a magblade as it offers good range and a variety of class skills. Range is helpful with many WBs. Second would be the sorc but more so due to the pets being helpful with soloing along with range for the reason already stated.

While it puts a greater challenge getting out of stupid and with some WBs that challenge is very well it seems you prefer melee. As such the magicka Templar would increase your survival due to the heavier healing from jabs which is a decent spamable.

I did not reply to the poll because it is not that simple.

Any of the DKs really. They’re far from the strongest class but they’re a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure DKs are also getting an overhaul in Q1 2020 which will only make them better

OP, you mentioned having tried magsorc earlier - pets or no pets?

Pet magsorc is "easy mode" but kinda boring to play, since you can only have 6 other non-ultimate abilities, due to pets taking space on both bars.

Non-pet magsorc is much more fun to play without being overly technical; survivability is still very good with Dark Deal as your burst heal + stamina management tool (and of course Crit Surge as your HoT).

If you get the armor buffs from another source, you can also drop Boundless and run a 1-buff build (Crit Surge only).

Other than that, you may want to try a magicka DK. Lacks mobility, but you can compensate for that with RAT.

In any case, build choice also plays a large role.
For soloing harder content, I prefer a tanky build (such as a vMA build), even though it comes at the cost of damage output. Sure, the fights take 2-3x as long, but you can usually recover from many mistakes.
OTOH you could play a glass cannon DPS build which hits like a truck, but your first mistake will be your last: Missed blocking that heavy attack? Too bad, you wipe. Got knocked back into a heavy damage AoE while out of stamina from the previous stun? Oops, fried to a crisp. Etc.

Since you've found Dragonknight dull and aren't grabbed by stamina Warden, it sounds like you might like a challenge. Stam Necro will keep you on your toes because some of your class abilities are illegal and will get you in trouble with law enforcement. But on top of that, it's very strong right now, with decent self-sustain (choosing the right race can help in this area). And it's very different.

2nd choice I'd say stamsorc because they did get some buffs this latest patch.

Think outside the box a little bit. I voted magblade because I am currently using a DW/Staff build that I really like. Sure, I suffer in the damage department a little bit, but I've always likes magblades and I like being on the front lines rather than hitting something with a staff from 30ft away, like the Grinch (Christmas reference ). It sounds like you have played each class a bit, and have a general feel as to whether you like it or not. Then take one or two of your favorite classes and try mixing it up. Do Bow/bow, 2h/2h, 2h/dw, dw/bow, staff/staff, dw/staff, bow/staff, ect...builds. Just because someone labels it as "not good" doesn't mean it isn't fun. And if someone says that a build you make isn't viable, prove them wrong (or hit me up and I will show them).

I think my issue is that I am looking for a class that has a little bit different of an identity. Love ESO, but classes play / feel similar to each other. Between Mag/Stam Necro, Stam Wardan, and Stam Sorc. Going to try the Stam Sorc and see how that goes.

    Thanks for the input all.

Stam are generally the same. There are a couple abilities each class has that will change things, but they’re still mostly the same. Where you get a big difference is what weapon lines you use.

    Mag play totally differently.

Most of the difference comes from your build and what abilities you use. After playing a class for a while you build to either cover weaknesses or build on strengths, that’s when there’s the most difference.

You can technically play all mag and stam the same, but I wouldn’t say that’d be playing the classes well.

So lets have an objective look at what the part 1 of this ''overhaul'' brought to Dk class:

    1.Corrosive armor nerf
    2. Wings nerf
    3. Fossilize cost nerf
    4. Dot costs nerf (twice in a row)

All they've done so far was to suck all the fun out of the class. magDk still has some abilities left untouched but stamDK is truly nothing but a collection of weapon abilities , if not for take flight, which I'm glad they didn't ''overhaul'' yet. If your idea of a lot of fun is weaving stonefist then have it your way though. Fun is relative after all, some people like suffering, can't be helped.

Will the 2020 patch be great , I don't know, but one quick look at the recent patch notes ( that have also promised to improve DK), shows the opposite, very clear nerfs to every DK ability that is impactful, outside of take flight, which ironically got buffed. (And with buffed I mean it actually connects now.)

Stamblade main for years myself, and still is.

But for your next adventure (and please consider this to be very subjective) I found magicka warden to be the class I could immerse and enjoy myself the most in, casually roaming the world, mostly alone.

    1. Bring along the bear for company (still letting you use 10 different skills, as opposed to petsorcs 6(+2 ultimates).
    2. Activate Blue Betty as your main buff before fights.
    3. Heal, and deal AoE or single target damage as you see fit.
    4. Freeze everything.
    5. Have fun!

Find a class that has an appealing aesthetic because essentially they all function the same.
Warden and Necro have a bursty kit with shalks and blastbones
Sorcerer and Dragonknight work the same having dot skills but require spammables from weapon skill lines
Templar and Nightblade have spammables within their class skills

From my perspective as someone who leveled one of each class to 50 to find one they like, you really aren't going to figure out which one you enjoy until you play them all. I pvp a lot, and I don't like to chase the meta, before the warden buff I played that in PvP until everyone else started to, and then I picked up necro. It had similar mechanics and instead of a green aesthetic I went blue.

What I'm really trying to say is that whatever class you like the most even if it is the smallest bit, try to pick out the features that you liked, and I don't mean characteristics, I mean like individual skills because chances are some other class has something similar.

If you liked Stam Sorc then try it out again, theyre able to push a lot of damage in both pve and pvp alongside great mobility and flexibility with skills like crit surge, dark deal, and hurricane. My only feelings about the class is that stamsorc is a fun class to play, but hard to perfect.

If you want to see what class can solo best try them on the gargoyle world boss of Valeguard Tower in Rivenspire... if your class can solo that guy than you can do almost anything that doesnt involve mechanics that need more than 1 person.

Hardest world boss still to this day besides Dragons.

You seem to have kinda ruled out a lot of the options available, beyond your existing 2 characters.

Personally I can solo most stuff up to and including vet dungeons (not dlc ones, Ive never tried to), with my magsorc. So you already have a character capable of doing what you want.

If the idea is that you want a new character to also fulfil your criteria, then based on what you have said about the classes you have tried, I would give stam or mag Necromancer a try. The main reason I say this is that its survivability for solo content is very high. It has all the skills you need to build tanky and/or for damage, not to mention decent healing potential also.

The use of a damage shield skill with the scythe skill, is an excellent one for pve solo play. On stamcro if you use a 2H sword with brawler as well, youre kinda immortal to everything but a ridiculous 1 shot mechanic.

I have a stamcro tank and a magcro dps. Both are great fun for pve in my experience. Neither however replaced my main tank, or my main dps, should I wish to do harder content such as vet dlc dungeons or trials etc.

    1) Obviously the first criteria is the class must be effective at soloing content. That includes efficiency in killing trash as well as the ability to solo difficult world content.

    3) Variety is important to keep it interesting, but I am not looking for artificial complexity or an extremely complicated class
    4) Nor am I looking for that extremely simple one bar / one button class
    5) I love classes that feel unique or have a unique feature
    6) I don't love a heavy prep class (apply 3 buffs before combat) though that isn't a hill I will die on
    1) that is not class-relevant, you can solo almost anything with proper build.
    2) this implies rather stamina, or magicka with a kind of dash-move.
    3) variety in a single build is limited. you can have several toons for variety.
    4) again, a class itself does not restrain you to a given skill bar, it's rather build-related
    5) each class has fairly unique take on their skills
    6) again, that is more build than class, and it's also a gameplay feature, you ARE supposed to buff yourself in a way or another, being skills, potions, gear...

I would say ANY class can meet your description with the right build.

You should probably reconsider your criterias, some could be:
    - at which range do you want to fight ? Close, mid, far ?
    - do you want pets or summons that fight for you ?
    - in group, do you want to be a strong support for others ? (not especially being a healer, but group support can be a playstyle)
    - do you also want to pvp of some kind in similar (not same, SIMILAR) setup ?
    - do you fancy a specific visual ? (wanna see flames, lightning, spiky things on your toon, dark gloom, vegetal-things, ...) Is there a specific visual you DON'T want ? (ie. "electric form is ugly" or "ice spikes look meh")
    - do you expect a tactical fight (you kind of control the environment, stun/root enemies, place "mines", teleport, etc.), or rather direct fight (throw anything you have in the face of the creature in front of you) ?
    - If you could pick a movie character to play as, which would you take ? (Xenomorph from Aliens, The Flash, Harry Potter, Dora the explorer, Terminator, ... whatever, take several if you want, that's just to have some direction to go to)

Keep in mind you can't do EVERYTHING in a single build, or you will have very mixed results.

Stamsorc is the usual go to, but the healing from crit surge which is what one instantly thinks is the big winner, increality leaves a lot to be desired.

Magplars with their heal on jabs are an instant powerhouse at low levels.

Magden specifically the slightly off meta Frostden is the single most powerful solo spec I have found either myself or amoung friends in this game (with the exception being vMA which still gets trumped by zoosorc in terms of ease). Ice heart, Winterborn (potential replace with Necropotence for more damage), Mothers sorrow, 2 ice staves.
Winters revenge and frost wall as well as your iceheart frost aura provide a massive amount of psuedo tankness by keeping large groups of mobs away from you, high crit with Ice heart ensures you permanantly have the bonus shield, slotting psijic abilities gives you even more shield on blocking. Living trellis is probably the single mose useful healing ability in the game giving a buff and a reliable/spammable heal with just 1 button.

Its fun, its thematic, it can solo basically any vet dungeons except for the DLC ones. Down side is it only pulls about 22k DPS on a target dummy, basically making it a tank with decent tank-dps and not enough mitigation to survive high-end 1shot mechanics without rolling. Play a dunmer to help with that part. (Why you would play anything BUT a Dunmer, I dont know, but I hear some people enjoy playing as lesser species)

Bound armaments is a stolen grim focus, but I've come to like it and how it plays into rotation. With this + crit surge and hurricane, you look and feel like a sorc. Very nice aesthetic identity.

I believe he most likely refers to this post : https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/57025

Which basically says: ''We’re not yet ready to share details on those long-term efforts, but the team is excited to push toward a future where class identities are unique, coherent, and satisfying for all players in all roles.''

So Its secretive, there is no mentions of a Dk overhaul really.

Outside of that post, they also said there will be ''behind the scenes class identity improvements'' part 1 and part 2. We already saw the part 1 of it for Dk though, which as you already know, was stonefist change and igneous weapons change.

In Q1 2020 the part 2 of ''improvements'' will follow up, which is what @Keylun probably refers to as 'the 'overhaul'', which will probably be a follow up of what they didn't do properly in the first part, stonefist. Anything beyond that would be a nice suprise.

The overhaul is a good idea. Warden, Templar, and sorc are pretty much balanced, though I’m having a bit of trouble getting the burst down as a MagWarden 1v1. DKs need a small sustain buff and they’ll be fine.

NB and Necro need more attention imo, but have to wait their turn.

Most of what’s needed is tweaks so classes can fill multiple roles, like Templars and Sorcs can easily do now.

Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

Any of the DKs really. They’re far from the strongest class but they’re a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure DKs are also getting an overhaul in Q1 2020 which will only make them better

Ah thank you! I just forget about this. I really hope the class uniqueness is achieved by something more than just usual skill changes we saw in the last five years.

Stam sorc is good, but I voted Stam Necro because you can build tanky and still do decent damage for solo play. I have a Necro tank that swaps out gear for a dps build without re-allocating CP, and his damage output is extremely good solo compared to my other tanks that also have dps gear swaps. If you build opposite me for dps with a little bit of tank tossed in, you will have a good dps, highly survivable character.
