Getting signed out of the forum. Why?

So right now I for the second time since the beginning of December get logged out of the forum for absolutely no reason at all. I haven't changed devices, I haven't changed password, cookies are enabled for this website (besides it only happens intermittently and not every time I use the forum). Security settings haven't been changed on my PC in ages.

My question is why this keeps happening? While it's not an onus to have to sign in again it is annoying to be reading a thread, wanting to reply to something, writing out the reply and then being told you have no permission to post. It doesn't even tell me I've been forcibly signed out and when I look at the top of the page I still look like I'm logged in, that only changes if I update. Which also removes anything I've typed in the reply box. So I then have to log in and then retype everything if I can recall what I wrote.
Can we at least get this changed so we don't get forcibly logged out in the middle of responding?

Not sure who to tag about it, but it is really annoying.

All cookies do have expiration date, I'm not sure which one is for login data tho...

Also maybe you have some software installed that has scheduled cleaning of browser data and other trash, for example Cleaner has that feature, and if checked, it will delete the browser cache/history/cookies as well.

If you realize that's what happened, sure. Thing is, there's no other indication that you aren't signed in except the "you don't have permission to do that" message, which is identical to when the thread is closed mid-typing and copy/paste does no good there.

A distinct error message like "You are not signed in" would be useful.

Nope got nothing like that? Furthermore I been a member of this forum since summer yet this only started happening now and I've affected no changes in security, browser or addons that should be causing this. I wonder if it has something to do with that security update that forced all of us to reset our passwords. If so it's annoying as hell and in my end an entirely unnecessary extra hoop that we're either told about nor get adequate warning when it happens.

Such a warning would be very much appreciated. Further this forum has some peculair warnings sometimes when you try to post a link which looks similar, so there's no telling that I would need copy my text. Plus as I said above this is a thing that's only recently begun to happen, without warning mind, yet another reason why I wouldn't think doing so necessary.

Depending on when you log on they could be doing background things(not zos the company that runs the forums themselves).
You'd be surprised at how many forum level things require dumping everyone to login.

Something similar is already in place. It's the "sign in" button. When you are able to see it, you aren't signed in.

So...I'm doing this on mobile, where it might be different than PC or a different mobile browser. When this happens to me, I'm writing a comment and only get the message "you don't have permission to do that" when I try to post.

I do NOT get the sign in button visible UNLESS I refresh the page. Then I get it and can sign back in...but refreshing the page eats the comment I was writing, at least from the last draft saved before I was signed out unbeknownst to me, which was the original complaint we were talking about.

Hence me asking for a specific "You are not signed in" message as opposed to the rather generic "you don't have permission to do that" which refers to multiple things on this forums. If I saw something like that, I'd know for sure to copy the comments to repaste it.

Ultimately, its a small change for me, but it would be clearer.

@Vizikul Didn't you read my OP? I specifically state that I APPEAR to be signed in, as in "I see my user name and those four icons (the globus, the star and the other two) at the top of the page". Yet I get the "you do not have permission for this action" message and when I refresh THEN I get the "Sign In/Register" at the top.

Plus the answer box isn't even visible if you're not logged in. I shouldn't even be able to type an answer in anything because logged out the box isn't there!

No, it's not the resigning in that's the issue. I'd suggest you go back and reread but since that was no great success the first time let me reiterate. I specifically say in the OP that it is "not an onus" or in simpler terms that you're capable of comprehending "It's not big deal". My issue is that I get no warning and then lose a reply I've just typed out. Sometimes a long reply. Not the biggest thing but it's annoying.
If just the page would show me as signed out when I click a new thread (and in signing me out making the reply box vanish) then fine, whatever. I'd just sign in again. But it happens during me reading a thread for whatever reason.

@ZOS_GinaBruno not sure if you're the person to talk to about this, but could you or another mod or maybe one of the admins clarify why some of us get logged out in the middle of reading a thread?

That just happened to me actually (I also use the forums via mobile most of the time) but when I got the message that I did not have permission to post there, all that I had typed was still visible so I did a “select all” and “copy” before looking into the problem. My first thought was that the thread had been closed, at least temporarily, but it was only that I was no longer signed in. Fortunately, I was able to sign right back in and the forum had even saved a draft of my post-in-progress which would have been quite helpful if I didn’t already have my manifesto ready to paste and post! ;)

@redgreensunset Yes, I did read your OP but did you also read mine? It wasn't specifically addressed at you, it was a response to VaranisArano's post. Talking about reading difficulties.

Again talking about reading difficulties. Veinblood1965 made a joke. The smiley should have made it clear. When I first read your thread title I made the absolute same joke in my mind (and at that time I didn't even notice yet who created the thread) I just didn't bother to write it down.

If I were you, I wouldn't call out other people like that. It's clear by now that you indeed have a "poisonous personality" and "reading difficulties" yourself.

It's strange you're able to start writing a comment without being logged in. I don't even see the comment box on mobile, only the line that says Sign in or register to comment.

No big deal signing in again though. Definitely not big enough for a forum post.

Having this issue also on iPhone.

Only started today. Can type message/reply but when comes to post - get ‘you do not have permission’ thing and the sign in bit becomes visible - even though I have ticked the ‘keep me signed in’ box.

Get signed out just switching threads, apparently. Not good.

Edit: Oh NOW it decides to works properly!! 🤣🤣🤣

Seems completely random to me. I have not had the specific problem OP has had of getting logged out mid-reply, but I do have "keep me signed in" checkmarked and still randomly get logged out for no apparent reason.

For example, I've been logged in for weeks now. Went to the forum this morning, noticed none of the threads "remembered" the last post I had viewed in them, realized what had happened, and I had to sign back in. I did not log out yesterday. *shrugs*

Well, if I'm logged out at the start, I do see the Sign In, as you say.

What I'm talking about is what happens when I'm inexplicably logged out mid-comment. Which happens - I can be a bit wordy when explaining something :) Then I don't see the error message until I try to post, I refresh the page, finally see the sign-in, and usually come back to a partially finished draft unless I guessed the problem and copied the finished post first.

Its a small thing for me since it happens relatively rarely compared to the time I spend on the forums. I mostly chimed in to provide a clear description of how its happened to me just like it did the OP with the result of losing comments. Given that most of the folks responding seem unfamiliar with being logged out mid-comment and what posters actually see when it happens, I'm going to guess that its fairly rare overall.

I do think that ZOS (or Vanilla Forums) could make a number of small tweaks to their forums to make it more user friendly. Having clear error messages that actually tell users what the problem is like "You are not Signed In" would be nice and eliminates the guesswork, better enabling us to use simple solutions like "well, just copy your comment, sign back in, and paste it. Not a big deal in the grand scheme, but small improvements never are.
