Newb Question About Loot

Hey Folks!
Ok, so this has been bugging me a bit recently, and I just gotta ask.
How does loot distribution work exactly? Say, for example, I'm running around the world and I see someone fighting a mob. Sometimes if I see their health low I'll throw a heal or smack it once to help. More often than not, the corpse is then glowy and lootable for me.
Am I stealing peoples loot by helping? If so, please let me know so I don't do it
