Is it possible to rebuild Cyrodiil populations?

Let me start off by stating that I hope to avoid negative one liners here, let's also avoid faction lock bashing, or throwing around terms like "pvpdoor" and "zerglings", tactics are tactics whether you like them or not, please be constructive with the tools that we have been given in-game. Is it possible that if people(hopefully from all factions) with leadership abilities start recruiting folks for weekly excursions(possibly working into more often), people that can objectively teach tactics, proper siege formations on keep doors, that it might improve populations? We all know pve and pvp performance is lackluster but I also know there are good majority of people that just play it through anyway. I kind of feel that what Cyrodiil has lost the most are objective leaders, they've mostly been replaced with people that have personal vendetta's against specific factions or people. Thoughts? Let's hear them!

You're correct Tequila. We know they have a plan to get us there, who knows how long it'll take to get there or how well all the optimizations will even work. So should we sit idly by until they do?

The problem is particularly on PS4 with the memory leak causing the program to crash almost exactly on the hour every hour mid fight that was going well frustrates the heck out of most players no matter what we try.
The lag can be dealt with the crash not so much. Hopefully tomorrow's patch will improve that.

I'm trying out FF14 in the meantime while they figure things out. Hurts to say but I want people to know because I want ESO to improve because it is still my favorite MMO.

I would like to get people engaged but performance makes it hard with constant blue screens and lag.

Seriously, this right here is basically a large part of the problem. It's hard to recruit new people to come play when they run into so many issues and problems every time they try. It's frustrating enough for experienced players to deal with the lag in general, the disconnects, abilities not firing, being stuck running in place while a zerg mows you over thanks to the texture display issue/bug, dying to melee abilities from 10+ meters away cause it lagged, dying from 20 things hitting you in one second cause you had a dsync and didn't know you were getting hit, running half way across the map cause your stuck in combat and can't mount even though your last fight was 10 minutes ago....

I could keep going but you get the point. New people on their first journey into prime time Cyrodil are much more likely to leave and never come back since they have to deal with all that while trying to learn tactics and how to survive.

Population can be rebuilt if performance improves. However, most of the best leaders that have left will not return.

I really hope so. I get jitters when I hear people talking about epic battles from years passed of 100 per faction, 3-way battles. I would love to experience that.

FFXIV is a great game for PvE.

I'm telling you right now, though, the PvP is really really bad. If you think healing is overturned in ESO, just wait until you jump into FFXIV PvP.

I've played WoW, Neverwinter, Tera, Heroes of the Storm, of course ESO, among other MMO's, and I've always been decent to good at PvP.....except for FFXIV. ESO has far better balance.

So, fair warning. FFXIV is one of the best PvE experiences I've ever had....but the PvP is severely lacking.

They HAVE to fix the performance issues, or every other approach is doomed. Nearly every PVP session ends up with 3 or 4 deaths in a short period due to lag and me leaving for the day. Or getting DC'd and it takes too many tries to get back in to bother.

Functioning performance that supports larger populations and huge keep and siege battles will be far more friendly to new players than the current environment. Big groups could get their wish to be armies, mid sized and small groups can cut off reinforcements or perform specialized roles. Gankers... well they'll always find something to do. :)

You can't rebuild a population when new players come to Cyro and die to dizzy swings from 20m away, siege and negates that don't render, or abilities they never saw because it looks like a slideshow.

Zenimax cancels pvp events because they know its gonna cause horrible performance issues and theres STILL a steady pvp population.

If they fix performance Im sure enough people will return to reopen the campaigns that were closed due to lack of population

Its definitely possible. As of right now I would say the biggest problems are performance and gameplay.

Dont need to say much about performance, lag, crashes every 15-25 mins, usually long loadscreens, bars not swapping skills not firing off. Its a priority because even if the gameplay was fine the game is still basically unplayable in pvp.

Game play has 2 problems. Combat gameplay and the actual mechanics of that you do in cyrodil.

Combat is noticeably less fun than in previous years. A lot of the player favorite builds arnt really viable anymore. Also tank metas gotta go. I dont know exactly how their going to be able to do that and definitely think tanks have a place in group play. 3 min long 1v1s wearing eachother out of resources is boring and not what players want to fight against. Its not fun.

Cyrodil mechanics, I dont think were all to far off here. If they did nothing with this and just fixed the above mentioned I think we would still see a healthy pvp population. Going back to cyrodils roots wouldnt hurt, a lot of players including myself bought eso to play a midevil war sim., siege and defend keeps. Its gotten a little off track over the years. I dont hate pvdooring, i think it has its place but it doesnt need to be the clear cut go to option in 95% of situations. Play around with the numbers a bit, balance out the usefulness of pvdooring and wall siege depending on the situation, give some variety there. Also think maybe increasing travel time would be a good but unpopular call. Like if a group is sieging a keep they want to be fighting similar numbers not the entire enemy server that road from one keep over. its why pvdooring exists in the first place, to give faster keep taking times and reduce enemy response time before you get overwhelmed. increase the percent keeps flag at and make it a longer of a ride to that keep

When I look at my ping, which is constantly at around 250, jumping up too 500 or even 999+ from time to time, I just don't see any reason for me to, for lack of a better word, waste my time in PvP.
I could arm myself up to the teeth with protection in order to avoid lag kill, but then I'm not going to be able to do much of damage either. So what is the point?

That is the worst idea ive ever heard. Do you have any clue how big of a disadvantage that would put console players at? Pc has addons that literally tell out on screen in big letters when to block and dodge roll, The exact amount of health each shield has, aoe dot timers and probably a ton more my console peasant mind doesnt even know about.

pc players would slaughter console players.

It is just frustration at this point and I wish to spend my time doing something fun.

    -Lag
    -Kicks you out
    -Cant activate power
    -Cant aim properly
    -Break free delayed
    -Drinking potion delayed
    -Bar swap delayed

If you wanna sit in a castle all day it is ok though.
    Anything involving 20+ people lag...

    1. Fix performance

    2. For God's sake add something new to cyro that doesnt enable zergs(looking at you, Hammer)

    3. Add some new weapon skill lines for mag and stam. For example: spear and shield, 2h spear, wand and shield, or caster gloves, etc.

    4. This one can be tied to #2 and is just something I think could take the hammers place. Add a WB type of spawn mechanic, a giant Molag Bal shows up at random in cyro and attacks keeps regardless of faction.

Edit 5. This is in response to tank metas. Change how sets like 7th and fury work. Its sucks because I run fury on my dk but sets like this enable players to get high defensive stats along with decent to high weapon damage.

Only way cross platform would work is....

    1) They allowed consoles to use add-ons. And this won't ever happen. Not because of Zos, but because of Sony. You only have to look at the history of Skyrim mods and the hell Sony put Bethesda through just to get the lame, only ingame assets used, watered down mods we got. Sony is wholeheartedly against it, so this will never happen.

    2) They take away add-on use for PC. And this also will never happen. After 6 years of add-on use the PC community would revolt. If you think forum whining is bad now, this would push it to an all time high. Minimap/Skyshard/lorebook/node markers, trader listings, not to mention all the combat hand holding they've lived with since inception...they would lose thier minds. PC players would be wholeheartedly against it, so this will also never happen.

Would cross platform be nice? Sure.

    I see two significant challenges

First, performance. It will be hard to maintain, let alone build the Cyrodiil population when performance is so poor. That’s all in ZOS’s hands and either they’ll sort it or they won’t.

Second, helping newer players over the learning curve. Unless all you want to do is welcome back players who have left Cyrodiil, you need some way of encouraging in new players. ZOS does the absolute minimum to do this, they explain almost nothing and make it as hard and cumbersome as possible for players to switch from a PvE to a PvP build (sets, skills and CP). So it’s down to existing PvPers to help newcomers get up to speed with what works and to welcome them into PvP. It won’t matter how good performance is if new players feel alienated when they enter.

It is possible, yet with how it currently Looks very unlikely. Their first big "improvement" was About as big a fail as it could get aka Group finder that, when overloaded, causes the whole game to die if Lambert is to be believed and has severe issues with bg matchmaking aka placing 15!!!! Players in one Team when the maximum in the whole bg is supposed to be 12, truly a masterpiece wonder how that happened.

Maybe their other improvements will actually be much better but what we´ve seen doesnt exactly inspire confidence.

But if they manage to fix Performance in cyro then Im sure the Population will grow a lot.

    QFT

I haven't played since the release of the 1st Elseweyr expansion. Performance was so bad after it was released, and the PvE was more boring then ever, i decided to take a break (no, i did not quit). They promised performance fixing beginning next year, so i keep my eyes peeled to the forums to see of there is indeed improvement.

Performance is for me the only fix (i know it is not an easy one) to make me return and play PvP again.

Under 50 is a good indicator of the pvp pop. If that camp starts to gain a population again, then you have potential new recruits for vet pvp.

As it is now, under 50 is dead and has little to no new players that frequent that place.

Something needs to be done to change how that server works. To make it more friendly to those new to eso pvp.

    Only for U50 pvp*
Use battlespirit to debuff anything over green gear and decrease the damage that can be achieved through battlespirit buff.

Through decreased damage you give the player time to figure out what is going on and more time to react and learn.

The decreased dam and decreased gear upgrades will push most of the diehard rerollers out of there or at the least make them less effective.

Remove the hammer from under 50 and make it a vet only tool, if they insist on keeping it around.

Or they can make sone locked only for console players campaigns. Then with crossplatform console players could choose if they want to play with PC players or they will go to separated campaigns.

At last crossplatform between PS4 and XB would be good.

Performance very big yes, second me a group of experienced PVP players on Xbox EU actively went out recruiting in a new PVP guild, got a good trader, hunted for lower CP players and 810CP with no PVP experience bring them in, very much focus on the positive aspects of you cannot do wrong you can only improve, lets have a laugh, join our discord we help you farming crafting its all good. And I works we have full groups all day long.

I think most experienced players focus on zerg bashing in all forms that requires typing and go small scale. While if some of the more expienced players took like 1 or 2 evenings a week out of their time to pick up randoms show them how its done.

This will be key to the population. The people not the game and its performance lol.

I have doubts. It is 5 years now and has some mayor flaws like the hourly tick. It is at its bottom and basically Battle Royale now. PvP for the sake of PvP.

The next thing is the huuuge gap between "motivated amateur " the the very organised guys who live there.

They should end the war and turn Cyrodiil and Imperial City into PvE zones and then open a new war zone with mechanics 2.0. I just cant find any better zone then Cyrodiil.

Fix the performance issues (lag, crashes, bugs) and I have no doubt that the players who love Cyrodiil for what it is will come back.

Just because some of us still play despite the persistent performance issues doesn't mean that a lot of players didn't leave because ZOS has failed to fix these known problems for years.
