Steam and ZOS play the blame game when the servers crash for steam users.

I'm not proposing it's steam's fault, of course. What I am proposing is that I don't have to worry about it failing on steam if I don't get it through steam.

I began on steam because I didn't know any better. Since I started playing in 2015 I'm allowed to use ESO 64 exe to launch the game. I bought a cheapo account last year non steam and use that launcher to patch the game.

Ive had steam since 2007.I currently have 63 games on it including 2 other MMOs. ESO is the ONLY game in 12 years that i have had problems with on the platform. Given my personal experience with Steam and a glance at the first 5 pages in these forums along with my personal experience with ESO, i would bet my savings account that Steam is not the problem.

My account is old enough that I can use the old, non-Steam launcher.

I used to play through Steam. Then we took that series of Steam/ESO outages to the knee, and I haven't gone back.

I haven't been inconvenienced by any so-called Steam outages-- by which I mean, people say it's Steam at fault, but many of those times the non-Steam players have trouble logging in, too, and apparently ZOS is always the one who "fixes" whatever was wrong, so is it Steam or isn't it?

Anyway, whenever there's been a problem-- which hasn't happened in a while-- it's always fixed before too long, so I haven't been inconvenienced by it.

If I'd known I could buy ESO without going through Steam, I might have done so. But I've got all my other Elder Scrolls games (even Arena) in Steam-- aside from Blades, of course-- so it's nice to have everything together in one place.

Most PC/Mac players probably avoid Steam for ESO. Many purchased the game before it was even available on Steam. Why go through a middle person in order to play the game when you go log in directly? Never made sense to me.

I had all my other Elder Scrolls games on Steam, so it just seemed logical to keep them all together. I don't have to jump through any extra hoops, I just click the ESO icon on my desktop and it goes directly to the launcher.

The only time I might get delayed is if there's a Steam update I have to load first, but that's usually just a few seconds. And I'm not sure how buying crowns works on the stand alone system, but it's really easy to do in the game. It opens a Steam vendor overlay inside the crown store, and you can click your wallet and they are delivered right away. I also like the session logger that keeps track of my hours played, etc.

I've never really had a problem with going through Steam, even with thousands of hours played. Some folks may have had a bad experience, there does seem to be a lot of resistance to the service, for whatever reasons.

ZOS has enough stability issues all on their own right now. Why would I ever want to add more downtime to that by tying it to Steam as well?

Because Steam offers features that the ESO launcher doesnt. Steam is to the ESO client what Minion is to ESO addons...on steroids.

I wasnt a fan of Steam either when i first got it. I was forced to use it because that was the only way i could play the game i wanted to play. No release outside of steam. But i got use to it and it improved over the years.

    With Steam i can:
*Manage, download, update, repair, and play all my games from one place. I can set steam to update my games automatically, throttle the downloads, set priorities, manage local custom game files, and pretty much anything else with my games.
    * I dont need to hunt for licenses or deal with pirate protection nonsense.
    * I can download install and delete my games as many times as i want. No discs to keep track of, No storing games im not playing on my PC.
    * I can install my games on multiple computers.
    * Remote play. This morning my wife used my old desktop which has a beefier CPU and better graphics card to play the game. It did all the game processing. She then sat in the living room on her lap top and used her laptop to control her character on my old desktop. It made life easier on her laptop since a bulk of the processing was done on the desktop.
    * Steam support. Without steam i have 3 options when dealing with a problem with a developer. Deal with the developer to fix the problem, let the problem go, or chargeback the product. Steam gives me a fourth much better option.
    * ETC

I dont believe for a minute that Steam is the problem. However, all other games i play on steam update through steam. ESO is the only game i have to use their own launcher to update despite going through steam which is probably why it conflicts and causes issues. ZOS refuses to let Steam handle their updates so it is the black sheep in my library that i have to check for a patch.

I am well aware of what Steam is. I have games via Steam. I just do not go through Steam to get games that are not essentially exclusive to Steam.

In the case of ESO Steam is not needed and does not really offer much benefit, if any. If I was on ESO via Steam I would have quit the game awhile ago during one of the multiple periods of sporadic inaccessibility to ESO. Some of those lasted close to a full day. It affected some core team raiding when a member was not able to log in because they were a ESO customer via Steam. To this day we have no idea if it is truly fixed since there have been multiple episodes and each time the outage occurred multiple times.

So I know what Steam is good for. I just do not like to have an added dependency to play the game. That is what Steam is for ESO.

Steam is very useful for the non-NA players, since it offers products in local currencies. It's up to the player to use its laucher or the ESO's because you can use both once you link the accounts.

If it can be avoided, I avoid it,
if it is only available via Steam then I think very hard about if I want it (or request a version on GOG, if posssible)

I do have old ESO account linked to Steam and I used to play via Steam for years.
However at one point earlier this year I had to install ESO again and after downloading the game via Steam, I came to point where Steam refused to even install entire game.

I also know that Steam users used to have login issues what comes with playing ESO, so I gave up with Steam installation entirely and I just downloaded basic ESO launcher instead.

Now all my accounts can login outside of Steam.

I'm one of those total mad men who purposely tied a non steam account to steam and then set up my eso + through steam.

I know steam gets bad feedback with running eso but personally I've never had any issues, expect for once I could not log in for a few minutes when eso patched. Other than that it's been great. Plus I got eso steam trading cards and built all 5 levels of the badge.

I purchased ESO through Steam. I ended up buying the base game for $10 through ZOS when there were a lot of issues logging in through Steam last year. Since then, I only log in with the ESO launcher. I don't have any issues using Steam for my other games.

The outages I reference were a while back, over a year ago...but again, my account is old enough that I can use both launchers.
Steam launcher: couldn't log in and play ESO
ESO launcher: could log in and play ESO

I don't know who was ultimately at fault, but I do know which launcher let me play the game with greater consistency. Hence why I habitually use the regular ESO launcher even when there aren't issues.
