To sum it up:
'In marketing strategy, cannibalization refers to a reduction in sales volume, sales revenue, or market share of one product as a result of the introduction of a new product by the same producer."
Its poor marketing, and its poor business to release a new TES Title while currently having another TES title running as the focus. Bethesda/Zenimax Media stand to LOSE MONEY, LOTS OF MONEY by not having TES6 as the exclusive TES title. The only reason TES Blades and Legends are going is because they have nothing to do with ESO or the single player titles. They are more mobile/card games, they are focused at a completely different audience. Blades and Legends are more companion games than anything else.
I would be very surprised to see ESO still being around when TES6 launches. This is part of why Firor said they were "free and clear for awhile" last year. You figure 2022-2023 release for TES6 (Since it will come after Starfield), and ZOS has been working on a new game for a few years now, this makes sense.
Pete Hines and Co. are not going to cannibalize their market by leaving both ESO and TES6 at the same time...They stand to lose too much money from this. This would be like Chevy discontinuing the Chevy Cruze, yet continuing to sell them for a few years directly competing with their new car line at a reduced price, they simply won't do that. they will sell and clear out their Cruze inventory before debuting the new car to replace the Cruze.
Honestly, I don't know why more people are not more excited about ZOS new game. This will be the game where they learn from their mistakes with ESO, things will improve, performance issues probably won't be a problem in the new game because they have accounted for it and were able to re-write things from the ground up. Furthermore, don't forget that Matt Firor was a key part of Mythic Games and Dark Age of Camelot, Im sure the guy has a lot of good fundamental ideas that he couldn't implement in ESO. the fact they are creating a brand new game, and won't be saddled with TES lore could prove to very lucrative and a very fund experience.
Firor and Co have been working on ESO since 2007, thats 12 years...by 2021 thats 14 years...burnout is real, and simply put ZOS will have earned the right to sunset ESO and work on something else after working on ESO for over a decade...thats an eternity...these folks are artists, making games is an art form, they deserve a chance to flex their creative muscle...just think....works of art like Horizon Zero Dawn would have never happened had those devs been pigeonholed holed into the same thing everyday.
ZOS has a pretty bright future, ESO won't be the end for them nor define them, the future holds a lot of excitement for them, and you should be excited to on their next offering.
The death of ESO will be the lag, fps drops and censorship on the forms when anyone discusses these perennial issues.
Elder Scrolls 6 will likely divert the attention of a lot of players only playing ESO for the story who will vanish/become much less active for a month or six then come back once they have explored every part of Elder Scrolls 6 until the first DLC and popular mods start appearing, then they will vanish again.
Just think of how many hours some people have put into Skyrim if the new Elder Scrolls lives up to that as a good sequel, you will get a lot of people only logging into ESO for the daily log rewards/daily writs for quite some time.
What will be the death of ESO is performance issues.
love elderscrolls series, but i want to see other real life people playing around me instead of just being solo with dumb NPC's.
But to think this game will survive as long as WOW or Grow as Big as Warframe or not take a HUGE player drop when the TES6 drops is wishful thinking.
Like many others, Fallout 76 killed my enthusiasm for TES6. Killed it, wrapped it in plastic, encased it in concrete and dumped it off a tall bridge into a deep and murky river. All that's left is for Bethesda to announce that the publisher for TES6 will be EA.
Bethesda's gonna have to really knock this one out of the park just to begin rebuilding the good will they've lost.
