Maybe the designer was a girl XD
I agree an overhaul on their god awful appearance would be nice. Also, maybe have the matriarch land when the player is not moving so they're not in everyone's view.
I'd like to use non-combat pets as skins for the combat pets. Add a glow to them or something to show that they are not the basic ones. This would add a lot of variety, and help sell more pets.
It's not like they need special animation. Just have them randomly zap stuff as usual.

Yes, there should definitely be a key to dismiss pets. I have the Pet Dismiss addon, but it shouldn't be necessary.....and most people don't have that anyway so pets remain flapping in everyone's faces in towns.
No wonder sorcs and their pets are so unpopular.
@ZOS think about it please.

But they know about it. Previously, before special abilities, summon key was the same as unsummon, but, casting the spell with a familiar active would cause them to be unsummoned rather than using a special ability.
So as a solution to this problem they removed it completely instead giving us a new button to be mapped for unsummon.
There is a stupid way to quickly unsummon on weapon swap, but that is viable only if your skills on swap are without summon skill.
On weapon swap if you don't have the skill in the same slot on both weapon tabs, it will remove pet.
Anyhow, I'm just saying, cos I see that you are pinging zos, well, this is something that was put there on the purpose.

Actually, I think Twilights should fly about 2 to 3 meters HIGHER so they're not in everyone's way.
Other pets ought stay a meter behind the player when not in combat, so they stay further away from writ turn-ins and more of the nodes, and/or phase out within 3 meters of writ turn-in locations in much the same way that group members and friends who have completed a quest area do now in many situations.
