Introduction
I'm gonna say that dragons were one of the best addition to the Elder Scrolls Online game. They are majestic, imposing and really beautiful creatures adding a bit of life towards a vast landscape looking a little too lifeless.
First and best thing about dragons is their unique way to spawn into the zone. They don't just materialize out of nothing but they come from some far away lands, caves, mountains. An idea to follow when it comes to future World Bosses at least.
Second best thing about dragons is that they don't stand their ground like pretty much every other world boss or mob out there. They move around the battlefield. They even fly towards a new place if they aren't under any imminent threat, looking for something to eat or kill.
Third part about dragons, and probably the best of them all are their majestic way they fight. They bite, they sweep the nearby enemies with their heads, wings, tails. They use powerful shouts. They fly around and over the battlefield seeding only death upon less experienced dragon slayers.
And now lets have a look at few particular dragons:
The ICE DRAGON.
Probably the most majestic of them all. Those dragons doesn't only look beautiful but they are just as deadly as their beauty. I love how they change the surrounding landscape around them during the fight, calling for a snowstorm that not only look visually impressive and make anyone just dream of Skyrim, but also are just as deadly as they look, by killing everyone unlucky enough to be caught in the chilling winds of the snow storm. I really hope you guys will preserve dragons for the Skyrim chapter as well and I really hope you guys will add a bit more threatening special effects around the region too, to make it looks like we are in Skyrim and not in a tundra region filled with snow. I want to see winds, fog, snowstorms and not a clear view for miles away like in most other zones. I want to slowly freeze to death If I stand for a bit too long in the chilling snow, and not just act like its just another normal day for us.
Anyway, whoever designed this dragon fight, you have my gratitude. One of the best fights I ever saw in ages, from so many aspects.
The FIRE DRAGON
Although not looking just as dangerous, they surely are the bringer of death and destruction. Around them the sky turns red and fireballs hit the battlefield every now and then. However I would had loved to see a firestorm barrier, similar to the ice storm one of the Ice Dragons, who kills everyone trying to enter or leave the battlefield.
The STORM DRAGON
Who doesn't love storm? However I would like to see a much more imposing thunderstorm around the battlefield during this dragon fight.
I would had loved to see however landscape changes around during those dragon fights and even during their sole presence in the region, such as frozen trees, burning trees or smoking ones. I would love to see the ground being seriously affected as well and the texture of the land around would change accordingly, by adding snow, scorched earth, lava pools etc.
Also would be nice to artificially increase the fight duration, by rendering the dragons immune to damage every now and then so they could actually play more of their imposing mechanics such as flying by, sweeping the battlefield or fighting from the top of a cliff or building. Idea is to prevent burning down a dragon before playing all its mechanics at least twice, and also team players together even more into figure out a way to bring down their immunity and allow them to kill them.
I would love to look forward other varieties as dragons, and here are some really awesome ideas that might only make someone DROLL about. And to be honest Season of the Dragon is never complete until we have a glance to met some other varieties of dragons. Enjoy reading:
The SHADOW DRAGON
I would like to see a dragon in the deeps of the Blackreach, who is using the shadows in their advantage. Some of the following ideas could also be implemented in lets say some future DLC dungeon pack or Trial.
- For the whole duration of the fight, the surrounding area should be affected by a sandstorm / shadow storm, lowering the visibility around.
- During the whole fight, Shadow Wraths, should walk around the battlefield and target random players, making their screen pitch black and moving them around the battlefield, disorienting them.
- Shadow crystals should randomly imprison players, slowly killing them if nearby players doesn't help them out by breaking those crystals.
- Shadow ground AOEs should immobilize and induce bleed to affected players.
- Additionally I would like to see the dragon charging at players, or using their wings to create strong dust storm around the battlefield, pushing players away and affect them with bleed effect.
- During the fight, players who will enter the battlefield should become trapped by a Shadow Barrier around the battlefield, allowing players to go inside but not letting them leave until the beast is defeated. Could work with lesser world bosses or even mobs.
- Luminescent flora, should provide a small advantage in this fight, by temporary using those plants to blind the nearby enemies, to grand extended vision to players, or render them immune to certain mechanics. Those Plants however should be used with extreme caution and only during the most dangerous moments of the fight and if all the surrounding plants are destroyed / covered by shadows the battle should be lost! Gives someone an idea about a trial mechanic. Anyone?
- During those moments, when the beast should fly by, they should turn the landscape around them pitch black, calls shouts, and spawn Flying Shadow Wraths around the battlefield. Those Wraths should fly at high speed, charge towards players, grab then, slashing them and throwing them away, introducing bleed effect, fear, immobilizing them or even insta killing them (or a combination of above). At the same time, Shadow Atronachs should also spawn around the battlefield and use the shadows to disguise their movements, teleporting around, so they can have a shout at you from behind. In the shadow form, they should be immune to damage.
- During those moments when the battlefield is pitch black, players should take advantage of the nearby luminescent flora to avoid getting killed or to gain certain advantages in the fight with the dragon. For example one mechanic could be added to make the dragon immune to any sort of damage during the shadow form. To break this spell players must focus the nearby light towards the dragon.
- When flying at a low altitude they should spit a shadow fire breath, insta killing everyone in his path. To make things more interesting, during those fly by moments the battlefield should also be turned pitch black and right before the sweep, players should be disoriented by strong winds and shadows, pushing them all around, making much harder to avoid the upcoming ray of death.
- Other deadly mechanics are also very welcomed.
The EARTH DRAGON
Unlike any other dragons before, this one should make use of brute force and calls upon nature instead of using magic to defeat his enemies. Again some great ideas about a future trial or DLC pack. Maybe a v2 Sunspire anyone?
- For the whole duration of the fight, the surrounding area should be affected by a dust storm / sand storm / fog, lowering the visibility around.
- During the whole fight powerful tremors should dislocate Stalactites should fall upon the battleground insta killing players caught in the direct hit. After the initial hit, those stalactites should break out and damage 3 nearby players, with physical damage.
- Additionally, tremors should open small cracks in the battlefield, insta killing those unlucky enough to fall to their death. Respawn point should be slightly outside the battlefield. Those holes could also be used in player advantage to trap and kill some Atronachs, whom could be immune to any damage for one reason or another.
- Sinking holes, should temporary trap unlucky players and if not helped out by their friends they should be facing a slow but certain death.
- Lava or Water geysers, or rivers could also damage the unlucky players caught in their path.
- During certain key moments of the fight, around the battlefield there should be a barrier of storm, damaging and temporary blinding everyone who is trying to go inside or outside or are simply caught by it.
- Trees could be used in players advantages, by allowing someone to use the grappling hook to lets say save himself or herself from the opening ground underneath him or her. They could also be used to move around the battlefield quicker.
- During fly by moments, the tremors should open large holes in the battleground, swallowing everyone unlucky enough to save themselves. Stalactites and rock falling should also be increased.
- Again, I would like to see the dragon charging at players, or using their wings to create strong dust storm around the battlefield, pushing players away and affect them with bleed effect, and in this case also causing some powerful earthquakes, lowering player movements as well.
- When flying by, those dragons should spit a dust fire, insta killing everyone in his path. Additionally the whole battlefield should be affected by a dust storm, lowering everyone visibility.
- A dragon shout that will render the dragon immune to any damage will make things even more interesting. One idea here, in order to break the dragon shield is to dislocate some large stalactites, hitting the dragon hard, or make the ground around him crack and shatter, forcing him to fly and break the spell.
The POISON DRAGON
Sanctum Ophidia v2
- Poison clouds, poison clusters, poison pools, who doesn't love some poison? Especially if we can spread it towards others.
- During some key moments in the fight, dragon should be rendered immune to any sort of damage by casting a shout that surround him with a strong poisonous barrier. In order to break his shield, players must work together to destroy a natural dam / aqueduct, causing a large quantity of water to fall onto the dragon, breaking his spell.
The MECHANICAL DRAGON
I will let you adapt Halls of Fabrication mechanics to this one.
- One thing I am looking here is to allow players to use the technology in their advantage, by using portals to teleport around, or why not even go aboard some small flying airships so they could damage the dragon from the skies, while avoiding all the death traps from the ground.
- As for breaking this dragon shield we could force him under a rain of electrical charges threw by some imposing mechanical structures.
(as more ideas I might get, I will post updates in this post)
