It’s time to update movement animations, character models and spell animations

I enjoy the game but honestly it just looks so cheap, dated and cheesy in some areas. An overhaul in movement animations, character models and spell animations would really help this game out in my opinion.

I know this isn’t FFXIV, WoW or whatever other MMO and I don’t expect it to look like those. But at the same time this game looks really dated in these areas.

Just my opinion and something I wish the devs would consider.

I actually like most of the animations in this game and prefer that they are somewhat simple and less flashy than some games...

The ones I don't like are on the Warden:

    - Cliff Racer should be changed to Ice Wraith for Magicka (and do Frost Damage)

    - Scorch would be cooler if there was a bit more animation of the bugs doing something rather than just appearing and disappearing. Deep fissure should also do some sort of elemental damage.

The whole Morrowind theme is so passe now... Warden should get some updates to fit with the game in general.

I like ESO’s unique look. :) I wouldn’t want any change that took it out of the Elder Scrolls universe.
(And if we’re talking about cheap/dated/cheesy, WoW absolutely takes the cake in that regard!)

I agree. Lots of attacks look goofy (stabbing with a mace for example), lots of equipment makes player look like a Saturday morning cartoon villain, character models are looking dated (feet that are just shoes with a texture painted on for example)

But if I remember correctly, ZOS used Cyrodiil as the excuse why we couldn’t have cloaks or Armor that wasn’t painted on the character. Because it would cause performance issues for people with potato computers and adding a checkbox in the game options to disable such things is too much work.

    Is it time? Yes
Can the Potato engine handle it? No chance in hell.

Doesn't look "dated" to me. Looks properly Elder Scrolls. Well, for the most part. Honestly, some of the flashy stuff has gotten out of control especially the mounts and those ugly-rear skins.

I'm not defending WoW here but the animations are spells have been pretty drastically updated. It looks pretty good these days. I'm not playing WoW atm but they did put in effort to update those things.

I'm not really familiar with ESOs other issues to be honest.

That may be; I’ve never played it. The cartoony look is a huge turn off for me. Final Fantasy has a lovely aesthetic but it is not Elder Scrolls and I wouldn’t want ESO to look like it.

Sure, there are models, animations and effects that could be improved, but some might be due to constraints of the engine/server (I am clueless about the technical side, sorry).

Well I'm not suggesting that the game should look like FFXIV or WoW. Like I said I agree that Elder Scrolls should look less dramatic but some of the animations, models and whatnot just look really old.

Have you played WoW lately? The models and animations have been updated drastically. It still has a cartoonish art style but but honestly the animations and spells look FAR better than ESO. The character models on most look better as well.

But it's two completely different styles so it's hard to compare really. If you're idea of good graphics is a more realistic look then I can see why you feel that way.

the good thing is we won't have in ESO such an ugly,

blurry low-poly graphics with eye-bleeding colors like wow have

Won't happen as long as they stick to their animation canceling system.
Rotations will always look jerky like this, like the spastic rendition of YMCA they are now.

You're just being defensive. My original post said "I know this isn’t FFXIV, WoW or whatever other MMO and I don’t expect it to look like those. But at the same time this game looks really dated in these areas."
I just mentioned WoW because they updated their models and animations. And honestly like it or not the animations and spells look far better in WoW. That's not even an opinion it just is what it is. Now character models and the world do have a more cartoonish look so if that's not your thing I get that.

This most probably will never happen. zos should change game engine for that and it is basically means that they need to rewrite the game. Have you seen the disaster with fist "performance improvements" they did? They have no clue how the game engine and its networking part are working. New devs are just studying this and in 2-3 years they will get more or less reasonable understanding what could be done without harming it. At this point the understanding that it should be rewritten from scratch will kick in and management will fire those guys and hire new devs and this cycle will go on and on. Looks at WOW for example - they are 2006 cartoonish game. They did 5 iterations to redo this, but it is still cartoonish. Nobody will do this for running game. We are just waiting for new game to come up with better graphics. I personally would like to see what MMO RPG "Lord of the rings" Amazon will do. They have a lot of money and game engine and graphics for their first attempt - New World - was not bad, but MMO with full drop PVP where resources are locked behind guilds - that was ridiculous. No wonder that this *** is dead. But they can reuse game engine from this game and it will be 10 years newer than ESO...
    So, will see.

Why would they need to change the engine to update these things? These already exist...they just need to be modified.

I would also love to see animation updates on this game. I actually liked some of the older animations more, some of them were too clunky but I liked the overall calmer pace of the movements. It seems they have sped up everything along the years.
Alot of the animations in this game make it feel weightless, paper thin and shallow. For example playing in 1st person the only light attack animation that doesn't annoy me is the 2 handed.

Is there a reason why people turn off additional effects from ally's? Spoiler: it's distract and fps drops.

I’d rather they fixed performance first and made combat actually fun again but after that sure the animations could use an update (not all of them though I quite like some of the animations)

Character animations are really good in ESO. In majority of modern games character moves like he is drunk with absolutely unrealistic inertia, all for the sake "of looking smooth". Ditch it. I prefer precise positioning to questionable "smoothness".
As for the ability animations, yeah they could've been shorter and crispier, the less effects the better.
