There's been a bit of debate to that. I didn't see the follow-up findings but someone said from testing he thinks it's something like:
Tooltip * (1+(sum of vulerabilities - sum of protections)) * deduction from resistances
Last time I saw his post he was looking into it further but I don't know if he found the actual game calculation.
P.S. - with battle spirit counting as a 50% damage reduction additive with other protections

If battle spirit is additive reduction, at resistance cap you would have 100% damage reduction.
