Alright after what amount to me a normal day of play i logged out of game ( all things eso closed) and no windows opened or browser tabs etc so nothing should be happening yet what is going on i hear ESO zone music playing out of my headset. A quick ctr/alt/del and bring up task manager to see if anything eso is still running. nothing was running yet the music continued to play i went further into task manager and no "apps were running" so digging/looking deeper into background processes i spied a eso process i killed the process and the music stopped. I guess game did not end the process properly so it stayed resident.

Yup, same thing on macOS Catalina. No longer logged in, launcher and ESO shut down, checked Activity Monitor and nothing ESO-related was running, but heard game music and sound effects (I closed a Finder window and it made the action sound when someone comes through a Wayshrine. Actually kinda funny).

From time-to-time, although not very often, the computer video display screen turns blank black. but I can hear the "ambient sound" and music, etc. continuing to play. I have never discerned either any particular cause, or a specific situation in which this event occurs. It just does.

So, I use < Ctrl-Alt-Del > to access the "task manager", which is actually the Microsoft utility program Process Explorer on my system, then terminate the ESO process tree. However, note that the game client did not have an opportunity to close any open files that it was using. That can have adverse consequences when the player simply launches the game again.

So, next I run Launcher and use the Game Options menu feature "Repair" to examine and repair any damaged files in the game installation before I resume playing the game. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

If you closed the game via Alt+F4 then it kills the game app but a background process of ESO keeps running. At this point, if you try to restart the game via Launcher, Play button will be grayed out. Now if you look into Task manager under the process (not apps) there is a tiny ESO process still running which causes this. However, continuous ESO music, never had that.
