The hired Companion

So throughout the elder scrolls series you've always had an option to hire a traveling companion, or mercenary if you will.

They would help you fight or have witty things to say, be capable of carrying some gear etc.

Now what if zos introduced a mercenary assistant into tamriel..

Have them similar to the night blades shade ability maybe slightly more or less powerful..

For those who solo the game I feel this would be a welcomed addition. As well as helpful in dungeons and all around questing and exploration..

Maybe limit them from the pvp zones? Or perhaps they would be welcome there as well as (meat shields)?

I just remember having those companions in morrowind, and skyrim and I was always so excited about gearing them out and making them a formidable opponent in thier own right..

Obviously kitting them out on eso would be too much.. it if a median could be found to incorporate (idk) maybe an option for ranged, melee, or magic it could possibly work

What do you all think about something along these lines?

Eh, I never bothered with them in the single-player games. I'm a solo player period. If I had problems with something, I just leveled up a bit more, until I could manage.

    I don't like "sidekicks".

This is an MMO, not a single player game. Your companions here are called "other players."

SWTOR is a cautionary tale about companions. Not only are they a lot of work -- not just making them but balancing solo content around having them -- but eventually they devolved into basically clones of each other that occasionally say different things.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Companions used to be unique (I.e Lokin turning into a Rakghoul, HK flipping all over the place, Treek flying, Blizz’s Rocket Launcher) but in 4.0 they decided to remove the uniqueness in favor of Companions being able to fill multiple roles. Solo content pre-4.0 was never balanced around companions. The only time where companions effected ‘solo balance’ was when you could literally be mobbed by 14 elite mobs, go off to make coffee, and your companion would keep you alive.

We don't need more things following players around. There's already combat pets, non-combat pets, and assistants.

Plus the AI isn't that good. Ever do the main quest with 3 companions? Infuriating

Well, exactly. How companion were used by players and what SWTOR "had to do" to account for the usage, and the current feeling that resulted ("used to be unique") … all this is a case study that really ought to be looked at before any implementation, if only to avoid pitfalls that happened to another game.
Lokin still turns into a rakghoul afaik but everyone puts their comp on heals (so who's fault is it that they are clones?) mostly and he doesn't rakghoul as a healer.

I would vote yes if they can get Colleen Delany to voice one of Lydia's ancestors.

neverwinter have companions but even there

players usually choose a stat boosting passive one

instead of running around bot with bad AI and stats

that are bad even for single player outdoor content

would it be immersive to have someone fighting

alongside your character in some questing? hell yeah!

but do we really need some stupid bot with 200 dps?

    i don't think so =/
