Critical Crafting or bug?

So I used to play a lot and took a break from the game. I recently came back and made a new character and crafted some gear for him. As I was putting the gear in the bank I noticed a couple of items were upgraded more than I chose to. For example, I was only upgrading my armor to green and weapons to blue but some armor was purple and blue while my weapon was gold.
Is this now normal and I missed something or is the game bugging my crafting and upgrading them more (hopefully not using materials 'cause upgrading to gold is expensive)?

It sounds you must have gotten upgrade-happy and clicked more times than you'd meant to. I mean, I WISH there were a bug that would cause items to be upgraded one level for free above where you stop, but I don't see that ever happening.

I know I only upgraded once. Single click to add, R to craft then single click next item and repeat.

Almost always this is an error on the part of the player, @Kattemynte ... especially if you've been away from the game for awhile.

The UI is a bit weird. Also there are some single-clicks where you used to have to double-click etc. When you put the weapon down for upgrade you don´t see what you upgrade TO, you see what you upgrade it FROM under 'improve'. It is possible it looked different before, I was a bit confused for a while after a patch and it might be a UI change that I didn´t pay attention to.
