Do you believe the combat team is moving this game in the right direction?

    I don't know...
Isn't this the third Combat Development Team in 5 years? There was the original team, then the Wrobel days, and the current team. Was there another one? Seems like they only last 18 to 20 months and then it's on to the next "vision" I this normal in MMOs?

The game desperately needs some class diversity. So I like that part.

But they literally tried to homogenize all the classes last patch. Then made a 180 this patch. They need to stick to a direction.

They categorize shadow image as a gap closer and nerfed it. In the history of ESO who ever used shadow image as their gap closer? when you have ambush.

The new combat team all I gotta say is

    big yikes.

Lol, cast time on ultis is nothing new... even before Elsweyr launched I usually had to wait 10+ seconds for my ulti to go off after I cast it in primetime Cyrodiil

Yes, I do think they want to move it in a better direction and have good things ahead.

How they get to that? Well that's the part that worries me <AKA Scale->Hold patch>.

I'm sorry but I simply can't understand how anyone invested in the endgame is happy with the way this next patch is shaping up or still has faith in the ability of the combat team (that's not to say this patch is good, in fact I think it's possibly the worst patch in a few years).

Back on topic: the complete 180 on DoTs making them worse than they were last patch is enough of a ridiculous and drastic decision to question the devs here, but the fact that using many of them is literally a dps loss is very discouraging.

Moreover, it was quite clear that most of the problematic DoT damage was being caused by the very strange decision to buff Soul Trap and Entropy despite warnings from the community during PTS that we'd end up in the situation we are in today. However, instead of adjusting these they decide to nerf DoTs across the board, across all classes... The fact that Volatile Armour has a higher DoT than some other main, class defining DK DoTs is actually ludicrous.

Then there's the fact that in place of using these DoTs in PvE rotations, it's more effective to slot skills just for passive increases to damage and not even ever use them. What is even more mindboggling is that since DoTs are totally out of the equation, it's better to use VMA destro staff on a STAMINA build to increase light attack damage.

Next look at the new and shiny Necromancer class that they have no idea how to fix and balance properly. Blastbones has an AI worse than potato and sometimes doesn't even cast, corpse generation is unreliable especially in PvP, tethers are way too clunky to use properly and their Colossus ultimate has a very strong unique debuff which makes them almost mandatory for endgame HM PvE content. So, to adjust for this ZOS changes the ability so it only applies this effect on the final hit of the ultimate. This is yet another thoughtless change as it doesn't effect PvE where is was overperforming, but instead nerfs it for PvP where it was significantly UNDERperforming.
^^ This class needs so much work before I no longer feel scammed for paying for it.

I'm not even going to go into stuff like the Undo bug or the stuck in combat bug since they're a little off topic for this discussion, but they still highlight a huge source of frustration and mistrust in the devs for PvP.

For these reasons as well as others I haven't mentioned, this next patch is looking VERY concerning for anyone seriously playing endgame PvP or PvE content. The only way I see people liking these changes and having faith in the devs going forward is if they are casual questers or RPers.

The previous changes that were tested and ZOS were overwhelmingly told by the community would cause a dot meta, the same dot meta that they are now trying to reverse.

The upcoming changes that people are telling ZOS are absolutely going to ruin the game for a lot of people, but they will be ignored too.

I know people will never be happy no matter what, but when you completely get it so wrong on this level, it’s time to admit you were wrong and start again.

I dont doubt they have some smart and capable people however the way changes have been done over the last few patches screams a team without a clear vision or plan and just reacting things as they come up.

A few patches ago (Elseweyr patch I think?), balance was actually pretty good. The only glaring issue being petsorcs, at least in PvP.

But you're right in that there will always be people who complain about balance changes. It's just that for Scalebreaker and Dragonhold, it seems that a lot more people are upset about these changes than usual, myself included being someone who doesn't normally care too much about balance changes.

You cannot accurately answer this poll until they've audited item sets, updated the champion point system, and with those two done then review how they've designed the class identity; You probably will not see the game's actual end result until late 2020. Until then, pay on the gamble the interim time holds your game time interest.

This is true but the development has been stumbling about since at least the Morrowind expansion. At this point I'm not even making a passing attempt at keeping my characters up to date.

Unless they have some magical card up their sleeve thats going to pull all of this wildly back and forth balancing together. And it make sense why they had to do the things they did. No, the combat team is not moving in the right direction and in my opinion, is completely ineffective at this time.

    Yes. They've got this.
DPS needs to go down, DPS most definitely will go down, even if just a little bit, so it's the right direction. Small step right now as DPS is still off the charts, but yeah.

Mechanics are there to be a challenge, not to be ignored and burned through. If you need to ignore mechanics to finish a dungeon, you're a good DPS, but a bad player. Go speed run a game.

ZOS need to enforce unskippable mechanics where your DPS doesn't matter, and make sure that these mechanics aren't a dps race. That way, no one will be upset with nerfs.

Also, one shot mechanics, specially the unavoidable ones, are trash and need to go. DPS race against guaranteed wipe is poop and needs to be flushed down the toilet. If they fix this, DPS can go down a lot more, even. Don't care.

i think they genuinely want the combat to be fun and rewarding, but the biggest problem is they are trying to balance all skills and gear across both PvE and PvP, which causes each class to lose their identity due to skills being watered down

Me too...and I don't see how any of that relates to the massive nerfs and cost increases currently proposed on the PTS. Actually, nerfing class skills and raising costs to uselessness significantly contradicts what they envision as identity.

Listen, we don't know what they have in mind (which is another problem in and of itself), but personally, this patch does nothing for my enjoyment of the game. Whatever the vision is it shouldn't be counterintuitive to fun...and that appears to be the main thing they're slicing and dicing out of the game.

    Yes. They've got this.
They are re-building the combat system from the ground up, essentially. And the game needs it. Unfortunately they can't do all the work that such a task requires in one patch, or two, or even three. They need a long time still to finish their combat system audit, and I like the path the game is going on. It's painful *now*, but later it will result in a better game that performs better and lasts further into the future.

Thank you for all of your hard work. Some of us out there see what you're trying to do and appreciate it :)
