• PC/Mac: No maintenance – April 6

ZOS has done one simple thing right where many have failed.

I'd been thinking about this for a long time now and I feel like I just need to mention it cause in my eyes concerning the gaming world, it's deserving of HUGE props, considering MANY other games decide to take the lazy route.

When your character takes a step, their foot remains planted on the ground during that step.

To be more precise, in ESO if you pay attention to your character's walk animation, you'll see that when you take a step and the foot falls onto the ground, your foot will land on a spot and STAY on that spot as your body moves forward during that step. I don't know about you but to me that is monumental for immersion. In many other games I've noticed the character movement makes it seem like the character isn't actually interacting with the world. The player model will have movement animations but somewhere down the line in development they must have not synced the animation with the movement speed of your character along the X Axis. This will result in your character seemingly floating across the ground, with the foot you're taking the step on sliding on the ground even though it's planted in that step. In ESO, this does not happen. During the animation, when the foot falls to the ground, it actually stays in that spot while the rest of your character model moves along the axis, giving you the sensation that you are actually interacting with the world physically.

That's just, really neat.

Also, Inverse Kinematics was one of my favorite Quality of Life improvements ever made.

In other news, weapons also remain planted on the ground during that step.

    ;)

(Good OP, @ArchMikem, just adding a little side humor ... )

You know what's not good for immersion? A spell becoming incredibly strong out of nowhere, then becoming much weaker just 3 months later.

We’re scraping the bottom of the barrel if all we got is “nice walk cycle”.

    ESO character movement is good.
I must add I despise the quick start/stop. Seems this is the normal movement for most games but, people really don't run and stop like this.

true....but i can be kinda really annoying when you have a delay in starting and stopping...you feel like driving around a boat... takes time to get used to (greedfall does this for example).

Inverse kinematics was added with Morrowind.

    Agree.
So...I remember SWG. (Pre friggin everything) We would run, then slow to a walk approaching our destination. Another player and I tested this. From the other players POV, my character just ran and stopped. From my POV, I ran and slowed to stop. kinda miss that simple code.

This is it! The definition as related to coding, Inverse kinetics.
Long video but the first 3 minutes explain reverse kinetics. \

But how do I stand in place and turn? And how do I make my mount walk backwards? Not very realistic to not be able to do those two things.

Yes, despite a cycle of increasingly wild nerfs and buffs, some of the character animations are good, therefore, ESO is best MMO.

Well, who said that magic was a stable force on Nirn? Maybe that should make it more immersive! :p Actually, it would be amusing if some NPC mage chatter concerned the recent volatility of magic and unexpected results from spells!

It's a lot better than you make it sound when several other game developers don't even bother putting it in the barrel to begin with.

To be honnest, the game world is also huge, beautifull, and have lots of easter eggs to discover. The crafting system is also far, far superior to any other I've ever seen in any mmo.
The game have a awful lot of qualities.

They do in Tamriel. Maybe you're confusing Tamriel with another world?

Tamriel also has an abundance of useful items to pick up off the ground.

Reflection too is pretty sweet. if yoyu use relentless focus (it makes your weapon glow red) in front of a player, the red glow will reflect off their character. so does other skills xD
The graphics and animation movement of this mmo is nice. ive tried other mmos and pvp looks like its fast paces and confusing. This is why eso is the best mmo

Sometimes when I farm too much, I do find myself eyeing the wildflowers along the side of the road... :)

(I swear there's a name for that effect, like when you've played too much Assassin's Creed and start analyzing how to climb real world buildings. Bleeding effect? I get it bad with Fallout 4 when I start thinking about scrapping farm equipment.)

Its not something new, take Assassins Creed, a very very old game.

The character's hands will follow the ledges you are grabbing or going to grab.

Animation works by using keyframes defining the bone's positions lets say... every 1 second. They you interpolate the position between 2 keyframes using quartenion interpolation, this is how all videogame animations work.

Now if you stop moving, all you have to do is to calculate the position of the bones of the character in a resting state, and interpolate the current character's bo es position with the calculated one.

The method is called Slerp is a linear interpolation method that follows a circular path.

I don't know. Look at all the complaints about how the indrik mounts don't always keep their feet on the ground. People can be picky about things like this, so even a small victory is still a victory. ;)
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!
