Don't flatter yourselves. You speak like all we do is fight dummies. Demonstrate these notions in an actual trial, where identities battle with actual mechanics, instead of telling us on stream how many parses you did to test viability.

everyone seems to be missing the point.

it's to give players room to adapt to different situations

in overland PvE content DPS is the way to go

in dungeons you might be really good as a tank but in trials you might be better as a healer

ZOS is giving players room to adapt and change when necessary by adjusting skills and gear

@Iccotak Any player could already change their PVE role by changing skills & gear. I don't see what that has to do with class identity though? If every class identity is that they can cover every base, then there is no class identity.

Hmm, this sheds some light on why sorcerer doesn’t interest me as much as the equivalent class(es) usually does in RPGs: summoning creatures — especially the equivalent of demons in this world — has never been part of my power fantasy for sorcerers and wielding magic. Of course, summoning is traditionally an option and so I expect that a lot of people do like it, but when I get into playing sorcerer more, I hope that it can be quite viable without this class skill line and I do like the lightning route especially with an arcane warrior. It’s probably not realistic, but even more spell options / class trees would be awesome! My power fantasy for sorcerers is all about calling directly on magic for cool effects — whether that’s fleeing fireballs at my enemies, bombarding then with nightmare illusions, creating tune traps, altering the world to be able to breathe underwater, levitating, etc. I know, I can’t expect to be able to do all of that, just saying what excites me about sorcerers. I came to ESO wanting to play a Dunmer sorcerer who would have a tower with upper levels accessed only through levitation!

why is role synonymous with identity?
None of the classes play the same - a templar tank and a DK tank are not the same thing and use different abilities therefore strategies to be successful
same thing goes for any class and role in ESO

none of the class abilities are copied and pasted unto another class.
Warden has a healing skill line but it works differently than the Templar and Necromancer

It's situational and asks the player to choose what role they want to play with their character class.
I've done well as a Templar Tank but am working on a Healer build for Trials.

Role used to be pretty synonymous with identity when the game started out. DKs and Templars were rather pigeonholed into tank and healer respectively.

ESO has been gradually moving away that idea since launch.

So if there's a persistent thought of "class identity = Role", that's why.
