Grabbing onto a ledge

Hi Peeps,

Just something I was wondering is why can't we grab onto ledges? With most games I play this is something that happens automatically and it sometimes bothers me that this game does not do that.
Does anybody know if there is a reason for this?

And something silly I was wondering is; when I see other players accessing their inventory or map it looks like they read a map or are rummaging through a bag or a chest. When I myself access my inventory or map nothing happens, or do other players see me doing the map reading or rummaging?

There are plenty of games in which you can't jump over a small rock. There are other games in which you can fly... There's simply no mechanic in this game for grasping a ledge. It's the way the game was designed.

They see you rummaging in your bag. Crown store/daily login reward is a glowing chest on the ground. Craft bag/inventory is you rummaging. Map/guild list/friends list is you reading a scroll. Champion Points is you praying. Crown crates is you shuffling a deck of cards... etc. You don't see yourself doing any of these animations, but others do.

    Edit: fix.

Thanks for your explanation. Regarding the bag rummaging thing :)

Yes of course in different games different things are possible I was just wondering if they had a reason for it because it is something that makes sense to me, but that can just be me of course ;)

    same reason you cant dive

    combination of

    a) limitations of the engine

    b) resource cost vs benefit to program something like this into the game... animations take a loooooooong time to program and perfect - usually not something that is done just because its "nice to have"

always remember that mmo development doesnt happen in a vacuum - if they use resources for new animations they cant use it on new content...

ESO also just isn't a platformer, so grabbing ledges isn't necessary for gameplay. They actually use this fact to their advantage I'm dictating which areas are accessible and which aren't... Would probably have to rethink some boundaries if we could grab ledges.

It's not just the character animations - the world itself would also need to accommodate this system. There would, first of all, need to be ledges that are grabable. That alone is a huuuuuge design and implementation timesink. Then, you have to get better at invisible (and visible!) walls to keep people out of places they shouldn't could climb to... Design gets exponentially more complicated when you allow people the ability to go wherever they want in whichever direction they want.

Thank you for explaining @Raisin for me as a layman I have the idea that it would just be changing some code and that's it But when you explain it like this and how much work it is I actually understand why they did and do the things in a certain way.

You forgot to mention the best one :D

When riding a horse, most of the time you see yourself riding a horse... but other players sometimes see you as "humping the ground" without any horse being present :D

Also a similar situation exists with the "sprinting on top of your mount" bug. :)

Grabbing edge and climbing up would make exploring feel so smooth.

This game's engine, i think, makes the jumping so frustrating!

If you play Murkmire you’ll get a hook shot for ledges in the zone. They expanded the “hiding basket” outside of the dlc where they originally appeared, maybe they’ll add some hook shot stuff to future areas.

So much fun! It felt remarkably reminiscent of Zelda mechanics. Kind of funny to have a nostalgia trip in a game not actually related to the original experience.

Basically, there is no Climbing in the game. At least from a player controlled aspect. There are a couple of times where a climbing animation is used by an NPC, but that is a scripted event.

Best we as players can do is activate a ladder or rope and then during a fade to black get moved to the next level up or down. There are several of these in the game.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Ermagherd! They're adding it (or something like it) in Southern Elsweyr!!! Squee! They've even referenced Zelda. :D

Just wondering why I can't drive a car in ESO. I can drive a car in all the other games I play.

Just wondering why you are such a *** other player are nice, did you go to school for that or is it one of the many undesirable traits you were born with?

I should have read further before giving my above answer. I love zelda and still play ocarina of time often and twilight princess.

    Some games never get old.

    1. There is not a good reason for us to be holding onto ledges. Without a need there is reason to have it.
    2. People see you doing the same animations you see others do. If you look at the Crown Store they see you looking into a chest.

Bethesda doesn't know how to code ladders so maybe that has something to do with it.
I know this is not Bethesda, but if Bethesda can't, what makes you think ZoS can?

The guy who actually runs Zos and ESO did not come from Bethesda. DOAC (Mythic) was the game Matt worked on before coming to Zos.
