Minions. Summon/dismiss

I'm a returning player. (Years) I play on Xbox. (Be nice) lol. Has something changed how minions work when assigned to hotkey buttons? They're taking up two slots, that otherwise would be nice to have ability attacks assigned.

I've tried a couple work arounds.
I've assigned them, summoned them, then switched out those two slots with something else and they despawn. Also tried slotting them in secondary setup, but when I switch to primary they go away as well.

Is the idea that they do equal damage or close to having two different attacks active?
Long-winded, but struggled to convey my questions.

Thank you for replies in advance.

Sorc pets must be double barred if not ult.
Warden ult must be double barred.

Necro pets can be on 1 bar.
    Nightblade shade also 1 bar.

    General rule:
If it has a timer =1 bar
If it's permanent = Both bars

This is and has always been the case for a permanent summon pet. There are pets that have a specific duration and they do not have to be on both bars. That is the difference.

Would anyone mind telling me what was meant by ult?

I'm sure it's something ridiculously simple, but I just haven't seen that before.

Sorc as an atro ultimate. But the description at the start may confuse the matter

If a summon is has a limited duration it needs to be on only one bar.
If the summon duration is infinite or until killed it must be on both bars.

That is the easiest and most appropriate way to look at this.
