I lost my internet connection just as I deposited gold to guild bank, losing the amount

Support suggested making a bug report about this.

So I deposited gold and at the same time lost internet connection. I saw the amount being deducted from my character's gold and couldn't interact with the game after that and soon after I was thrown back to login screen.

After getting back online, I asked the guild leader to check the history and my gold never went through. I deposited the amount again and it was visible soon after.

So how does this even work? Does the game first remove gold from me, then the server checks if the gold actually left my account or something and since I lost my connection between these steps, everything was aborted but I still lost the gold?

The game had some naively designed network protocols at launch. Fundamental safeguards like message confirmation and client-server state synchronization were added as an afterthought to prevent cheating, duping and loss of items. I would not be surprised if some of the flaws remain.

Having said that, there should be logs, and they ought to show what happened if the transaction made your deposit disappear into thin air.
